FanDuel NBA DFS Lineup Picks (1/19/21): Daily Fantasy Basketball Advice

Hello, I am the newest team member at RotoBaller. You may remember me from the very old days on The Sporting News or The Sports Blog Network, or from the last five years at Fantasy CPR/FanSided Fantasy. You may remember me for every college football spread pick for the last few years. You may remember EuroLeague or NBA. My hiatus is over, and now I'm onto hopefully bigger and better things at Rotoballer. The NBA picks will only be one day a week, but I will still be covering EuroLeague for you guys, and I am proud to announce my foray into NCAA basketball DFS. Be on the lookout for that this week!

Now onto the NBA slate for tonight. FanDuel is my lesser-played DFS site because I like the interface better at DraftKings. That's not a reason to shy away from FanDuel. We have nine positions to fill instead of eight. On a two-game slate, like we have tonight, with no multi-position eligibility, it can be very difficult to construct a FanDuel lineup. Allow me to help! To take down a GPP tonight, we have to get creative! We also get an extra hour before lock to explore said creativity.

In this article, I will be providing you with my daily fantasy basketball lineup picks for FanDuel on 1/19/21. I’ll be providing multiple player suggestions for players at guard, forward, and center on FanDuel, aiming to highlight one option apiece at the high, middle, and lower end of the salary scale. You can also check out DraftKings lineup picks and injury news before lineups lock. Good luck, RotoBallers.

FanDuel DFS Guards

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, SG – at Denver ($8,600)

SGA is the highest-priced guard on the slate, but he's not so high that he's going to alter lineup construction all that much. I will take SGA in the upper tier because he has a higher upside than Jamal Murray and a more stable floor than Donovan Mitchell. Denver has had serious issues guarding the perimeter this year. Some of that has to do with the ineffectiveness of Gary Harris when he is on the court. The Nuggets are allowing opponents to shoot 39.1% from beyond the arc. We all know how lethal SGA can be when he gets going. He dumped 33 points on the Bulls in the Thunder's last game on Friday.

Jordan Clarkson, SG – vs. NO ($6,300)

The middle tier of shooting guard is thin tonight on this small slate. It's tough to recommend Clarkson in this spot, and I'll move off of him if Joe Ingles ends up playing. The problem is that the only other middle-tier guard is Eric Bledsoe. He has been wildly inconsistent even with Lonzo Ball out. Clarkson has much more upside even if Ingles plays. However, if Ingles is in, either move up to Mitchell or Murray or pay down at the other three guard slots. Messing with Bledsoe is a tough sell even in GPP formats.

P.J. Dozier, SG – vs. OKC ($4,400)

As has been the norm this year, Gary Harris struggled in his return over the weekend. Dozier is at worst in an even timeshare with Harris right now. That is a suboptimal situation to deal with, but on a two-game slate, this could be the creative pivot that you need. I expect most to chase the upside of Hamidou Diallo. For all of you MME guys, you definitely should in at least half your lines. However, Dozier has a better floor splitting minutes evenly with Harris. One of the guards should have a strong game. The Thunder are allowing 112.1 points per game on the season. Given the performance of Harris so far this year, Dozier is the more promising of the two.

Also consider: Donovan Mitchell ($8,200), Jamal Murray ($7,800), Mike Conley ($7,600)

FanDuel DFS Forwards

Brandon Ingram, SF – at Utah ($8,400)

I'm old enough to remember when you couldn't play forwards against Utah. Those days are over. The Jazz have given up some big games to small forwards this year with Khris Middleton and Jerami Grant leading the way. I could argue that Ingram is better than both of them. The strong play of Zion lately has taken some of the luster off of Ingram, but he's still the guy that this offense runs through.

Zion Williamson, PF – at Utah ($7,800)

If you're having a shot of Ingram, Zion should be the chaser. Zion is a bit of a throwback to the 90's NBA. He's a paint warrior that is lethal within 15 feet and a monster on the boards. Utah simply doesn't have the bodies on the interior anymore to keep Zion from having his way. The Pelicans are content playing him 35 minutes a game now. This is going to be a huge game for Ingram or Zion. I don't think it's both, but I also like the idea of stacking the forwards up against Utah, especially since the center isn't an elite scorer.

Kenrich Williams, SF – at DEN ($3,800)

The Thunder frontcourt situation is a bit of a mess right now with both Trevor Ariza and Al Horford away from the team. That gives plenty of minutes to the youngsters they have around there, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern to how they are played. Roby sees the most consistent minutes since Mike Muscala is the only other center on the roster. Williams didn't play much until the Thunder got blown out by the Lakers on Friday. He performed well enough in that game to get an encore call against the Bulls. Williams answered the bell with 29 FanDuel points in 27 minutes. If Williams is going to keep playing like this, he's a great bargain while the price is this low.

Also consider: Will Barton ($6,100), Luguentz Dort ($5,300), Isaiah Roby ($4,500)

FanDuel DFS Centers

Nikola Jokic – vs. OKC ($11,500)

This is one of those nights where I could make 150 entries and Jokic would be in every single one of them. The old adage to never punt center on FanDuel is especially true tonight. Jokic has at least 60 FanDuel points in three straight games and five of the last seven. He's getting hot. Jokic ravaged Utah over the weekend. There's no way Roby, Mike Muscala, and Moses Brown can stop him. Jokic is my one true lock of the night.

Rudy Gobert – vs. NO ($8,500)

I rarely play Rudy because he is frequently overpriced. We haven't seen Gobert have a huge impact on the game since he touched all of the microphones at the post-game presser last March that led to the suspension of the 2019-20 season. Gobert is consistently good and a solid cash play, but I just can't see fading him for Jokic here. However, I'm not all about negativity. Gobert has averaged a double-double (10.4 points, 9.6 rebounds) in 21 career games against Steven Adams. There is a chance that Rudy could live up to the price tag here.

Jaxson Hayes – at Utah ($4,000)

On a per-minute basis, Hayes is a monster. The issue is that Hayes doesn't see a ton of minutes and wont unless Adams goes down. However, the Pelicans view the second-year man-child out of Texas as the future. Hayes has a ton of potential and you see it every time he gets his short bursts of minutes. I'm not a huge fan of punting center, but if Jokic winds up in foul trouble and Hayes plays 20 minutes, you're sitting pretty in a GPP. It just depends on how much of a gambler you are.

Also consider: Steven Adams ($5,800)

The NBA Rundown – FanDuel NBA DFS Picks – January 8, 2021 (1/8/21)

Our favorite players at each position in the various price points can be found below for tonight’s ten-game slate.

Point Guard

Coby White ($6,600)– I love what we have seen from White this season especially in the five games since the Bulls became short-handed due to Covid issues. In those five games, White is averaging 21.6 points, six rebounds, and 5.8 assists in 36 minutes of action. White has at least 33 fantasy points in four of those five games. Tonight we should see similar production from White with Tomas Satoransky still out as I imagine tonight could be a night that the Lakers decide to give some of their vets off on the second night of the back-to-back.

Cole Anthony ($5,000)– Anthony is likely to be chalk tonight due to Markelle Fultz’s devasting injury and Michael Carter-Williams also out with a foot injury. With both of those players out the rookie should start and play heavy minutes as he did in the Magic’s last game. In that game, Anthony played a career-high 32 minutes. Now the expected minutes are not the only reason why I am high on Anthony tonight but I also love his potential usage rate and match-up. This season with both Fultz and Carter-Williams off the floor we have seen Anthony have a 25.1% usage rate. When it comes to match-up the Rockets are one of the better ones in the NBA for point guards despite having John Wall who is a really good defender on their roster as they rank 23rd in terms of fantasy points allowed per game to point guards and 27th in defensive efficiency to the position.

Raul Neto ($4,200)– I am going to watch the status of Russell Westbrook tonight who is questionable due to a dislocated finger. If Westbrook is out Neto would be one of the top if not the top value play on this slate. In the two previous games that Westbrook missed this season, Neto is averaging 17 points, two rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 steals. Neto is averaging 30.65 fantasy points per game in 27.3 minutes of action and for the season is averaging 0.92 fantasy points per minute.

Shooting Guard

Caris LeVert ($6,800)– LeVert is going to be one the chalkiest players on this slate just as he was last night and I don’t see how you are underweight compared to the field on LeVert at this salary. LeVert has just been that good this season with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving out. This season with both players off the court, LeVert has a usage rate of 38.2% and is averaging 1.51 fantasy points per minute. If we look at just the two games that both players missed all together we will see that LeVert is averaging 25 points, 5.5 rebounds, 10.5 assists, and 3.5 steals with at least 50 fantasy points in each of those games. One of those two games that both Durant and Irving missed also came against Memphis who the Nets also face tonight.

Tyrese Haliburton ($5,400)– I don’t think De’Aaron Fox plays tonight and if he is out Haliburton would be an elite of elite plays. Haliburton played 34 minutes in the Kings’ last game with Fox going down early and had a huge outing with 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists, a block, and three steals. Haliburton had 46.4 fantasy points in that game and for the season is averaging 1.11 fantasy points per minute when not sharing the court with Fox. The match-up with the Raptors is also one that I don’t mind as they rank middle of the pack in terms of fantasy points allowed per game and defensive efficiency to point guards which is the position that Haliburton will get the majority of his minutes at tonight.

Small Forward

Jerami Grant ($7,800)– Grant struggled in his debut with the Pistons but since that game, he has been really damn good. Grant has scored at least 22 points in each of those seven games and is averaging 26.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.2 steals+blocks. Grant has at least 30 fantasy points in each of those games and is averaging 41.34 fantasy points per game during this stretch. While the match-up with the Suns leaves a lot to be desired as they have been one of the better defensive teams in the NBA this season especially against small forwards I don’t think they stop Grant and I am expected him to threaten the 40 fantasy point mark once again which would make him one of the best points per dollar plays at the position.

Joe Harris ($4,900)– Harris is another Nets player that I am on tonight due to all of the injuries they are dealing with. As mentioned before the Nets will be without Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving tonight as well as Spencer Dinwiddie who tore his ACL about a week ago. With all three of those players out that opens things up for Harris. Harris is averaging a fantasy point per minute when not sharing the court with all three players and has at least 30 fantasy points in both of the games that Durant and Irving missed.

Power Forward

Julius Randle ($9,400)– Randle is getting up there in salary but for good reason as all, he has done this season is put up numbers. Randle is averaging 23.1 points, 12 rebounds, and 7.4 assists this season. Randle has at least 35 fantasy points in each of his games this season and has at least 50 fantasy points in four of his past six games including in back-to-back games. Randle should continue his hot play tonight as we know he is going to play a ton of minutes as Tom Thibodeau always plays his key players a ton of minutes. We also know that the Thunder are an excellent match-up for Randle as they rank in the bottom ten in both fantasy points allowed per game and defensive efficiency to power forwards.

Zion Williamson ($7,800)– Outside of Caris LeVert Williamson is my favorite player on this slate when factoring in salary. I am so high on Williamson due to two reasons. The first of those reasons is the fact that Williamson is always a fantasy monster and has had two big games in a row. In those games, Williamson is averaging 26.5 points, eight rebounds, and 2.5 steals+blocks. Williamson has at least 42 fantasy points in each of those games. The second reason why I am so high on Williamson tonight is the match-up with the Hornets. The Hornets have allowed the second-most fantasy points per game and have the second-worst defensive efficiency to power forwards this season.

Kyle Kuzma ($4,100)– I am of the personal belief that either LeBron James or Anthony Davis sits for the Lakers on the second night of the back-to-back. If that is the case I am all over Kuzma. Kuzma would play 30 plus minutes in that situation and see an increase in usage as well. The match-up against the Bulls is also a plus one as the Bulls have allowed the most fantasy points per game to power forwards this season.

Center

Mitchell Robinson ($5,800)– Robinson has three straight games with at least 33 fantasy points and should easily hit that mark tonight against the Thunder. The Thunder have the fifth-worst team rebounding rate in the NBA, have the fifth-worst team defensive efficiency against centers, and rank in the bottom half of the league in terms of fantasy points allowed per game to centers. Robinson would also see a boost if Nerlens Noel is out for the third straight game as Robinson would play some extra minutes in that situation.

DeMarcus Cousins ($5,300)– I wish Cousins was still only $4,100 in salary but even with his $1,200 salary increase I think Cousins is one of the best plays on this slate if Christian Wood is out. If Wood is out we are going to see Cousins start again and in his start in the Rockets’ last game with Wood out, Cousins went for nine points, 14 rebounds, four blocks, and two steals on his way to 44.3 fantasy points. While you may say Zach that was one game and there is no way he can possibly have another big game in what is likely only 25 minutes of action. I however would disagree with that as even in only 25 minutes Cousins should do plenty of damage as he is averaging 1.62 fantasy points per minute this season.
