Lego Harry Potter is a Lego theme based on the films of the Harry Potter series. It is licensed from Warner Bros.. Lego models of important scenes, vehicles and characters were made for the first six films and all the books released. The first sets appeared in 2001, to coincide with the release of the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Subsequent sets were released alongside the new films, until Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The line then went dormant for three years, with sets being released in 2010 and 2011. In 2018, it was announced that more sets based on the Harry Potter franchise would be released, including new sets based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and its sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Overview[edit]

The main focuses of the line is Harry Potter's first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as he discovers that he is a famous wizard and begins his education.

History[edit]

In January 2004, Lego owner and CEO Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen announced a change in direction for the company, which at the time was facing a DKK 1.4 billion loss, and that the company would focus on core products and not "big, movie-related IPs such as Harry Potter".[2] A week later, the company clarified that this did not mean any immediate "radical changes", and that the Harry Potter theme would continue. However, the theme was discontinued after 2007 for a time.

In June 2009, it was officially announced by Lego that a video game, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1–4, was in production and released in June 2010. Lego Harry Potter: Years 5–7 was released in November 2011.

Warner Bros. and Lego announced on February 12, 2010 that six sets including Hogwarts Castle (set number: 4842), Hagrid's Hut (set number: 4738), The Burrow (set number: 4840), Hogwarts Express (set number: 4841), Dobby's Release (set number: 4736) and Quidditch Match (set number: 4737) would be released in October 2010. These sets have newly decorated mini-figures and animals including Luna Lovegood, Bellatrix Lestrange, new owls and new pigs. Also announced was a Lego Harry Potter board game that was made available in August. In 2013, The LEGO Group officially discontinued Lego Harry Potter sets.[3] However, a Lego Dimensions add-on pack featuring Harry Potter and Voldemort was scheduled to be released on 27 September 2016.[4]

In 2018, it was announced that more sets based on the Harry Potter Universe would be released, starting with a set based on the Great Hall.

On 28 April 2020, it was announced that more sets based on the Harry Potter Universe would be released on August 2020.[5]

On 31 August 2020, LEGO Group announced that the newest set Diagon Alley (set number: 75978) were be released in next month.[6]

During the post-2018 reboot wave, Lego has also released two series of Lego Harry Potter Collectible Minifigures under the Lego Minifigures theme.

In 2021, it was announced that Harry Potter Hogwarts Crests (set number: 31201) would be released on 1 January 2021 as a sub-brand of the Lego Art theme.[7] Lego has also announced more sets to be released in the summer of 2021 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Lego Harry Potter.[8]

This extraordinarily detailed set is for ages 18+ and is comprised of over 3,000 pieces.

LEGO is celebrating the 20-year anniversary of the firstLEGO Harry Potterset in the most unique way. One might even dare say that this new launch of LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Icons Collectors Edition (item number 76391) coming in early September is the LEGO equivalent of a love letter to all Harry Potter fans out there.

This extraordinarily detailed set features some of the most iconic characters and artifacts that we’ve come to recognize from the well-loved franchise. At the center of the collection is everyone’s favorite companion owl, Hedwig, clutching in her talons the famous and entirely customizable Hogwarts Acceptance Letter. This collection also includes Harry’s trademark glasses and wand, Tom Riddle’s diary, a non-edible and non-jumping chocolate frog and its respective wizard card, a Hogwarts scarf that can be personalized to represent Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin.

This set will also include some potion books and a tray that can sit comfortably atop the books which contains five potions that the most avid fans will recognize as the Polyjuice Potion, Gillyweed, Felix Felicis, Powdered Root of Asphodel, and Wormwood Infusion. In addition, there are 3 exclusive gold Minifigures, Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Professor Minerva McGonagle, and Rubeus Hagrid, and a display stand to place the Minifigures, which includes a decorated tile celebrating the two decades of LEGO Harry Potter. Last but certainly not least, a Harry Potter homage collection couldn’t be complete without the smallest and most valuable ball in Quidditch, the Golden Snitch.

This incredible collection is set for ages 18+ and is comprised of over 3,000 pieces. The newly announced Harry Potter Hogwarts Icons Collectors Edition will be available September 2 – just in time for a new Hogwarts school year – and will be available on LEGO.com and LEGO stores nationwide for $249.99. Here’s our first look at the upcoming 3,000-piece LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Icons set

Update: LEGO has officially unveiled the new Hogwarts Icons set, which you can get all of the details on right here.

Earlier this year, the LEGO Group celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Harry Potter theme with a collection of new kits recounting various moments from the franchise. It now appears as though the festivies over the landmark occasion aren’t quite over, as a new direct to consumer set will be launching later this year from the Wizarding World. Entering with over 3,000 pieces, the new LEGO Hogwarts Icons set looks to assemble a collection of signature accessories from the series. Head below for everything we know so far.

Here’s our first look at the new LEGO Hogwarts Icons set

Entering as something akin to a UCS set for the Harry Potter theme, we’re getting a new massive creation from the series later this fall. Previous years have given builders the ginormous version of Hogwarts Castle itself, as well as Diagon Alley in 2020. Now looking to mix things up, the LEGO Group is moving away from locations and focusing on props for its new Hogwarts Icons set.

Stacking up to 3,010 pieces, the new Harry Potter set arrives with a series of brick-built items from the Wizarding World. Each of these are about as close to life-sized as possible with the medium, and assemble everything from a massive Hedwig the owl to wands, Harry’s glasses, and even a Golden Snitch.

As of now, there’s no details on when we’ll see the set officially announced. Given that we already have a pretty clear look at the box art, it wouldn’t be too shocking to see the kit formally showcased by the LEGO Group sometime in the coming weeks ahead of a launch next month.

We previously saw the Diagon Alley kit from last year announced a day before it went up for sale on September 1, so it’s likely we’ll see a similar release date this time around.

Another crucial aspect we’re waiting on is the price. I’d be willing to bet the LEGO Harry Potter kit will enter in the $300 range given its UCS-like focus and the 3,000 pieces. Though as low as $250 also seems pretty reasonable. We’ll just have to wait and see though for an official announcement.

A new Harry Potter gift with purchase will be launching, too

To continue with the 20th anniversary theming, the LEGO Group will also be launching a new gift with purchase go to alongside the Hogwarts Icons set. We’re not sure the exact part count on this one yet, but the miniature build delivers three additional golden minifigures to the lineup. Themed around the Chocolate Frog Cards from the series, there’s Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Professor McGonagall. It has a neat little display plaque on the front and should serve as a pretty novel addition to the brick-built items in the main set.

9to5Toys’ Take:

The Harry Potter theme has already received some of the coolest kits of the year throughout 2021, and now the new LEGO Hogwarts Icons set is keeping that ball rolling. It’s certainly one of the more unique builds out there, and looks to deliver something out of the ordinary from the usual play sets and other minifigure-scale models we’ve seen in the past.
