Monster Hunter World: Iceborne - How to Beat Blackveil Vaal Hazak

By John Higgs

The Blackveil Vaal Hazak is one of the foulest Elder Dragons in Monster Hunter: World, but with the right preparation, players can defeat it.

It's been over three years now since the original release of Monster Hunter: World and Capcom's action-RPG title is still going strong. Monster Hunter: World was the fifth mainline game in the Monster Hunter series, and did a lot to modernize the franchise. New and powerful consoles enabled the game to show off its beautiful environments and terrifying monsters like never before.

One of the most fearsome of these titanic beasts is the Blackveil Vaal Hazak, an elite variant of the Vaal Hazak Elder Dragon. Players first encounter the Blackveil in the story mission Under the Veil of Death, which requires a Master Rank of 19 to start. The Blackveil Vaal Hazak is a foul, spore-ridden creature that can easily outmatch a would-be hunter. Here's our guide on how to avoid that fate, and take down this brutal Elder Dragon.

Best Equipment for Fighting Blackveil Vaal Hazak

The first thing that every good monster hunter does before departing on a hunt is investigating the beast they're hunting. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of a monster is vital to choosing the correct equipment. The Blackveil Vaal Hazak is weak to both Dragon and Fire damage, as well as the Blast Ailment. Players equipped with Master Rank weapons imbued with these elements will have a much easier time, but having a powerful Monster Hunter weapon with no element can also work.

On the flip side, the Blackveil is strong against Thunder and Ice damage, and completely immune to Water. When facing an Elder Dragon of this tier in Monster Hunter: World, bringing the wrong weapon can spell disaster. In addition, the Blackveil is also strong against all the other ailments, so players shouldn't rely on them in their builds.

When it comes to Armor for facing the Blackveil, the most important thing is high Defense. This general attribute will help protect from the worst of the monster's attacks. Finally, the Blackveil's most insidious weapon is its unique Effluvial buildup. Through a constant aura and its foul breath, the Monster Hunter: World Elder Dragon will cause Effluvial buildup in players, reducing their health massively when it reaches max. To help avoid this, players should equip themselves with Effluvial Resistance Jewels before the fight.

Strategy for Blackveil Vaal Hazak

Avoiding Effluvial buildup is one of the most challenging aspects of taking on Blackveil Vaal Hazak in Monster Hunter: World. Even with Resistance Jewels, players may still find themselves suffering its effects. For this reason, it's a good idea to bring a stock of Nulberries to the fight, which can cleanse the condition. It's also possible to dispel the Blackveil's Effluvial Aura using one of Monster Hunter: World's Elderseal weapons.

Apart from the Effluvial Buildup, the Blackveil is still a tough Elder Dragon with some powerful melee attacks. Its weak points are its head, chest, and tail, all of which can be broken/severed, along with its forelegs. It's best to stay on the monster's flanks, dealing damage while avoiding its dangerous breath/beam attacks. Breaking the fungal patches on its body will weaken it, and if its face is exposed it becomes vulnerable to flash effects.

Players should be particularly wary when the Blackveil rears onto its hind legs. This means it's either going to enter its Enraged mode, granting it huge bonuses, or it's recovering lost Effluvium. Players can interrupt this action to prevent the monster from reactivating its aura. As long as players can keep the fungal growths down, avoid Effluvial buildup, and focus the weak areas, they should be able to slay the Blackveil Vaal Hazak without too much trouble.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Wiki Guide

An Elder Dragon that stems from and thrives in the rotting mists of the Rotten Vale, Vaal Hazak is a sight to behold. Covered in a rotting veil and with two jaws, each lined with sharp teeth, this monster seeps Effluvium into its environment and its presence is a poor omen for any hunter not properly prepared.

This is the Monster Hunter World executive director's favorite new monster - see why in the video below:

Vaal Hazak Strategies

While not having the brute force or power of Nergigante or Teostra, Vaal Hazak has an ability that if not fully prepared can make quick work of any hunter. The Effluvium it seeps out of its body can cut whatever health pool you have in half until its effects go away. So that great meal you had before the fight, poof! You're as vulnerable as a baby Kestodon.

Fear not my dear hunter, for the effects of its Effluvium can be easily nullified with (no pun intended I swear) a nulberry. Bring 10 of these on the hunt and restock when you can at camp if necessary. This will alleviate the hardest challenge of Vaal Hazak. In addition if you can afford to sacrifice your belt slot for one fight, the Great Girros belt has effluvium expert, which nullifies the damage overtime from inhaling effluvium gas. This WILL NOT negate his blight, so don't get cocky. Not having to worry about the ongoing damage from the gas though is a significant boon in this fight.

In terms of attacks, he has several swipes, charges, and tail swings to learn just as any other monster. However the attacks you'll really want to avoid are his Effluvium blasts, which come in three types. The first is a long range jet stream (very thin) that comes from his mouth, covering a little under half a circle while moving his head from his right to left. Basically, if you're in front of him at almost any distance within the map when he engages this, get that nulberry and mega potion ready, because you're going to get hit. The jet itself can be easily avoided if you're even a few inches above or below him, so use slopes accordingly. Alternatively, dash to the right side of him if you notice the start of the attack. If you're quick enough, you can get free hits on his head for the duration of the attack. Secondly, he can use the same attack, but fire it directly beneath him, creating an expanding cloud that if caught in, will do less damage but still land you with the blight. Thankfully this one gives you some time to run away from it as you can see the cloud expand outward, as well as the obvious tell of him standing straight up before he does it. The effective spread is much smaller on his back half, so if you find yourself in close proximity and no time to run, head towards his tail for a better chance at avoidance. The third blast his the least to worry about, and only covers where his body lands after attacking. This move can be misleading, because it's initial telegraph looks as if he's doing starting the area of effect effluvium cloud. To start, he roars as he goes up on his back legs, stunning you. To finish, he belly flops forward, letting out a small cloud, causing a tremor (staggers hunter), and damaging you if you're caught underneath. Other than that, you will find most of his attacks to be rather sluggish. However, his elder dragon ability makes most of his attacks apply blight when enraged, balancing him out to be a formidible foe.

When enraged, it will carry a cloud of Effluvium around its body that will slowly drain your health should you already be tainted with the blight, so consume that nulberry ASAP. Keep all this in mind, and you'll be ready to battle with this harbinger of death.

Lay down a cleanser booster near where you're fighting to alleviate Effluvium without taking the time to eat a Nulberry.

Vaal Hazak Weaknesses

Monster Hunter: World Vaal Hazak: how to kill it, what is its weakness

We're now into the final stretch in our Monster Hunter: World guides and perhaps the most unorthodox of all the Elder Dragons - Vaal Hazak. This zombified monstrosity is always surrounded by a gassy cloud that if you're not prepared for will make this a short and unsuccessful hunt. This guide will go through why the cloud is bad for you and Vaal Hazak's attacks, as well as how to kill it and what its weaknesses are.

Monster Hunter: World Vaal Hazak guide

This is one of the hardest fights in the game, so you definitely need to be fully prepared before heading into battle. You can check out our Monster Hunter World guide to get some general tips for what to do when preparing your gear, as well as a plethora of other articles with full equipment lists for your perusal.

If you are looking for specifically Monster Hunter World Iceborne guides, then we have created a separate guide hub for just expansion stuff. Head over to our Monster Hunter World Iceborne guide to make your start.

Vaal Hazak's entry in the monster field guide.

Vaal Hazak strengths and weaknesses

Fire and dragon are major weaknesses for Vaal Hazak, while ice can do a good chunk of damage should neither be available to you. It is fully resistant to water attacks though, so try not to use this element. Vaal Hazak is a lot more resistant to ailments, meaning that only blast and stun will have any great affect on it.

Weak points include the head, torso, and tail and all have varying different ranges of weakness depending on weapon choice. Ranged weapons are not a good fit for this fight as none of Vaal Hazak's weaknesses are as good against it and its ranged attacks are perhaps its most devastating. Blunt weapons are only really good on its face, while bladed weapons seem to be the most consistent weapon of choice. Breakable parts include the head, torso, and claws, as well as the severable tail. This is one fight where swinging a bladed weapon is the best choice.

Vaal Hazak spews its miasma smog.

How to kill Vaal Hazak

As this is an Elder Dragon, you can't capture it, so no Tranq Bombs should be brought into this fight. Instead bring along all the barrel bombs you can carry, as well as any available healing and health/stamina boosting items. In addition to that, you should definitely bring in a full stock of health bar increasing items, as well as all the Nulberries you can carry. Certain equipment can neuter its smog, which is the number one thing to keep track of in this fight, however the fight is very doable with Nulberries. Flash pods are also worth bringing with you for certain circumstances.

Its attacks are rather limited. Up close it can do the usual bites and claw swipes, but its tail swipe comes with a little flick at the end just in case you dodged the first attack. It will nearly always scream before it attacks with its charge, so listen out for the audio cues. It can also leap a short distance to pounce on any unsuspecting hunters. It does have a surprisingly long time to recover before attacking once more for any of its physical attacks, so get a few hits when you can.

If it rises up and screams, find some cover to hide behind or get behind it. The spew of gas that it projects is not only a highly damaging attack, but it will also inflict miasma on you. There are also times where it will breath on the ground, so get as far away as you can from the gas and keep away as much as you can. Should you become inflicted with the miasma, you'll be affected by its drain attack, which also hurts any NPCs around it that are also affected by the miasma. When it becomes enraged, it will have a small cloud of gas around it for a short time. Make sure you don't over-commit to attacking it when this is the case, as you'll only become infected.

One thing you should keep an eye on is the Girros population. Having a companion Girros thanks to the Grimalkyne relationship you can obtained lightens up the numbers, but it's easy to become paralysed by the smaller lizards before a devastating attack from the Elder Dragon. To learn how to make friends with the local Grimalkyne, head to our Monster Hunter: World Palico guide.

Vaal Hazak drains life from those affected by the miasma.

How to cure Vaal Hazak's miasma

While its attacks may not be much to write home about compared to the other Elder Dragons you've faced so far, the miasma is the most annoying aspect of this fight. It's really easy to become afflicted with it and it has some nasty consequences. Not only do you steadily take damage, you also lose half your health bar, making it very easily for Vaal Hazak to one shot you at full health.

There are several ways to mitigate the risk. Firstly, if you happen to have any miasma gems equipped, this will reduce the amount the health bar goes down by. Having three equipped will negate the entire effect, but will still chip away damage from you. You should also have meals that focus on health improvements, as well as use Max Potions, Ancient Potions, and Nutrients to bolster your health bar. The only real way to cure the miasma is to eat a Nulberry, which you should have a full stock of before fighting Vaal Hazak, but you'll likely also need to pop a healing item off too to heal back to full health.

What materials can I get from Vaal Hazak?

Vaal Hazak is definitely one of the harder fights in the game, but has materials that are sought after.  The best way to consistently obtain them is to team up with other players to fight this monster again and again for better rewards. Those looking to team up with friends should check out our Monster Hunter: World PC multiplayer guide. For more on how to use these items, you can either check out our Monster Hunter: World combat guide or our Monster Hunter: World armour guide. In the list below, the stars indicate the frequency in which the item in question will drop, as well as details on whether some items are obtained by breaking a specific part of the monster.

Vaal Hazak is an Elder Dragon in Monster Hunter World (MHW).ヴァルハザク (屍套龍) in Japanese.

A grotesque Elder Dragon, that inhabits the deepest part of the Rotten Vale. It uses the fatal vapor of the vale in what appears to be a symbiotic relationship.

Vaal Hazak Details & Locations

Vaal Hazak Combat Info

  • Elemental damages: Vaal Hazak emits a fatal vapor, also called "Effluvium", which it uses to hurt its enemies.
  • Weaknesses: Vaal Hazak is weak to mhw-fire-damageFire and mhw-dragon-damageDragon .
  • Moderately susceptible to blastBlastblight and stunStun.
  • Weapons with mhw-eldersealElderseal cause its Miasma to dissipate for a short time.
  • Head, chest, front legs and tail are weakspots.
  • Weakness signs: As soon as the Vaal Hazak is injured enough, it starts limping. At a certain amount of damage, it starts playing dead to collect Miasma for a powerful attack.
  • Combat tactics: Due to its ability to shorten your Healthbar, a meal to get your Health up to 150, Vitality gems for up to 50 more HP, and a couple of Max Potions and Nutrients would be best to take on a hunt if you want to slay this Elder Dragon.
    • Nulberries can get rid of the Effect of Miasma.
    • The above mentioned "playing dead" should be approached from behind, since after collecting enough Miasma, it will shoot out a beam in front of itself, which can sometimes be fatal. This attack can be prevented by doing enough damage to it before it can collect enough Miasma. This attack can be stopped with a flash pod.
    • Equipping 3 Miasma gems will completely negate its ability to reduce your health to half. You'll still take damage, but your health bar will remain intact.
    • In the area just outside its den, on the ceiling are two fangs suspended by vines; hitting them with a projectile will cause them to fall down. Hitting Vaal Hazak with these does a decent amount of damage, and also knocks it over.
    • Multiplayer sessions should be wary of its Miasma beam. If it detects a target far enough away from it, it may decide to use this attack. Given the beam's large area of effect and distance, it's very possible that unwary hunters may be caught up in the beam by coincidence.
      • This can also be triggered by your Palico or nearby monsters such as the Raphinos that appear just outside its lair and the Girros within, even though he is not hostile to them. Confirmed in single player and VERY close up, he just spammed the beam attack for a while, any corroboration would be appreciated.
      • In certain areas the beam can be blocked by the locale, such as a boulder or a wall
    • Stay away from acid pools, as the combination of acid damage and Miasma damage drains health very quickly.
  • Resistances: The Vaal Hazak is Immune to mhw-water-elemental-damageWater and has a relative high resistance to Poison, Sleep and Paralysis with only 1⭐
  • Vaal Hazak's mhw-dragon-damage_sDragon  weakness only applies to wounded body parts while its mhw-fire-damage_sFire weakness is always active.
  • The general tactics against Vaal Hazak is staying on its two sides (since it only has one breath ability that can attack sideways), maintaining a relatively close distance (since it has long distance reposition abilities that can put you in a position where it is impossible to be out of the line of fire of its breath), and keeping in mind that its charge abilities are (somewhat) wide and long.

A dragon on a grey background surrounded by a pale miasma. The dragon's wings are torn, and it's jaw is open at an unnatural angle. The feet are adorned with long hooklike claws, and the dragon is covered in torn flesh.

Vaal Hazak is an elder dragon appearing in Monster Hunter World.

Vaal Hazak has a typical draconic figure, albeit with a very disturbing tone to it. It's maroon and green body is long and slender figure, covered in numerous hooks, while the claws on its feet have grown long and twisted. The dragon has long fangs and a double jaw. Most disturbingly, it appears to wear a sinewy coat of rotting flesh over its body.

Vaal Hazak lives exclusively within a region known as the Rotten Vale, a series of valleys and caverns filled to the brim with corpses, bones, and fungi, as the region is where wildlife from the Coral Highlands above fall after death, and where old monsters and dragons journey to meet their end. Vaal usually lies dormant deep within the Vale, releasing a unique type of flesh-eating bacteria known as effluvium into the deep Vale. The bacterial clouds feed on rotting flesh and infect living creatures alike before Vaal draws them back in, feeding itself and helping to hasten the speed of decay in the Vale. However, if agitated, Vaal will awaken and begin roaming the Vale, causing a major upset in the ecosystem.

Vaal Hazak possesses a unique symbiosis with the Effluvium Bacteria. It's body is constantly surrounded by a cloud of the bacteria, and it can spread it out to choke out and weakened foes, or use it in the form of powerful breath attacks. Additionally, by drawing in or releasing the bacteria, Vaal can drain the life force of an infected creature, or "resurrect" their corpses with the bacteria controlling them.

Vaal Hazak features a vulnerability to fire attacks.

Staggering Vaal will temporarily cause him to lose control over the Effluvium clouds.

His head, chest, claws, and wings can be damaged, and his tail can be cut.
