First Names: K – Z

Obituaries are listed alphabetically by FIRST name. Included are people whose last name, maiden name, or married name is Alford or a spelling variation: Alfred, Alvord, Allford, Halford, Hallford, Holford, etc.

The Alford American Family Association (AAFA) often adds notes to each obituary, including Social Security Death Index (SSDI) data, relationship of the deceased to other Alfords, and lineages. We add to AAFA NOTES as time permits.

Where lineages are included (Alford unless otherwise stated), the format is: Name, year of birth, state or country of birth.

Obituaries of AAFA members and sometimes their spouses are also included on AAFA Member Memorials and may include more information.

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN)—A man and woman were found shot to death in a car early Friday morning, and a neighbor said he heard “about seven shots” when they were killed.

Durham Police were called to the 100 block of Lodge Street just after 12:20 a.m. Police identified the victims as Larry Alford, 40, and Brenda Whitaker, 34, both of Durham. The deaths are being investigated as homicides, police said.

Alford went to Hillside High School. His sister told CBS North Carolina she was too devastated to speak.

Whitaker, the mother of two children, was about to be a bridesmaid in an upcoming wedding, CBS North Carolina has learned.

Neighbor George Thompson … said he heard about seven shots…. Thompson said he recognized a picture of Alford and said he walked in the neighborhood often.

L.F. ALFORD DIES IN REX HOSPITAL

VETERAN NEWS AND OBSERVER EMPLOYEE WAS WITH PAPER FOR NEARLY 53 YEARS

LeRoy Franklin Alford, whose nearly 53 years with The News and Observer ranked him second in length of service only to Editor Josephus Daniels, died last night in Rex Hospital. He was 74 years of age.

Despite ill health of the past few years, Mr. Alford had continued as mechanical superintendent of the paper, a job he took over in 1921 after serving in other capacities on the paper. He also was a director of The News and Observer.

He began his nearly 53-year term of service with The News and Observer in November, 1894, shortly after the paper had been purchased by Mr. Daniels. Mr. Alford first came to Raleigh to install three Linotype machines for the paper, the first Linotype machines installed in this State, and remained as a Linotype operator. At that time, the paper was being published in the old Gatling Building on Fayetteville Street.

After several years, he became foreman of the composing room, and in 1921 was named mechanical superintendent.

Mr. Alford was born in Johnston County in 1873, the son of the late H.H. and Emily Pope Alford. While still a boy, he went to work for The Chronicle in Wilson, and while there lived at the home of Mrs. Mary Cleves Daniels, mother of Josephus Daniels. A few years later, he went to Washington to work in the Government Printing Office, and later went with the Mergenthaler Linotype Company to learn about the machines when The News and Observer decided to do away with the hand-set type.

In his more than half a century as a News and Observer man, Mr. Alford saw the paper’s circulation grow from 1,800 to the more than 97,000 of today. He was a member of the Raleigh Lodge No. 500 of Masons and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He had been a member of the International Typographical Union for more than 50 years.

Surviving are his wife, the former Louise Bishop of Northampton County; a daughter, Mrs. Jorgen Storm of Tuckahoe, N.Y.; a brother R.H. Alford of Arcadia, Calif.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4:30 o’clock at Brown’s Funeral Home. Burial will be in the family lot at Oakwood….

The News and Observer offices will be closed this afternoon from 4 until 6.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Daniels, Frank Daniels, Josephus Daniels, Jr., Wilbur Alford, Charles Alford, Joseph R. Pointer, Harvey Pittman, Jr., Aubrey Pittman, and Powell Edwards.

TRUCK FLEET TAMES DEADLINE BUT NEWSPAPERIN’ IS THE SAME

By Margarette Smethurst

Away back yonder in the very early twenties when newspaperin’ was just as complicated as it is not and a lot more personal, it seems to me, I lived intimately with the daily problems of getting out The Old Reliable. One of those problems was always with us. It was ever-present.

It was the hectic nightly race with the deadline for the first edition and the slim margin between press time for that edition and leaving time for the west bound train. Nor was that as simple as it sounds. There was no fleet of trucks to scurry away to near or distant towns with the morning paper. There was no super-duper press then and the aging and often ailing press added mystery and hazard to each night’s battle. Oftener than not, hope lay in the government ruling that if a mail truck backed up and started to unload mail, the train must wait for the loading; and that’s the old secret that I’ve been remembering again and again this week.

“Secret” probably isn’t quite the right word; perhaps, “conspiracy” comes closer to the thing that got the papers aboard the trains.

Right in the middle, the main spring of the conspiracy, was Lee Alford, the grand old man of the inner works of The News and Observer. Mr. Alford’s ability, capabilities, friendliness, loyalty have been remembered and praised in this week since we buried him, and we, who knew and loved him, value that praise; but it is as a story-teller that I like best to think of him. It was as a story-teller that he played his part in getting the mail bags, filled with The News and Observer, on the trains when time ran out, when the press bucked and stalled and the web broke right at the moment when a few seconds made the difference in winning the race or “missing a mail.”

When the time was “tight,” Mr. Alford’s little black Ford would take off for the Union Station, a little ahead of time. He’d park and mosey into the depot and out under the shed. When the train came in he appeared to be a man expecting the arrival of a truck momentarily. Casually, he’d saunter toward the engineer’s cab, or to the conductor. They all knew him. They looked for him.

“I just heard a good story,” he’d begin. The story could be long or short, just right for the time he needed, but it was always a good one. Once begun, the story worked its way to the spicy climax, timed to coincide with the arrival of a puffing truck with, perhaps a third of the mail bags due to leave on the train. Seconds later, another car or truck would race up with a few more bags which were hastily transferred to the first truck while the “unloading” already in progress, was amplified to take care of the whole of the list for that “mail.” Mr. Alford’s story ended at the exact moment that the last mail bag landed in the mail carÑand we had “made the mail” again.

I never heard of a single failure, nor of a single story that failed to be worth hearing out to the last word, the last plop of the last mail bag on the floor of the mail car.

In Mr. Alford’s fifty-three years of newspapering at the same stand, and in my own twenty-five, plus, there have been found newer and sometimes, easier and better ways to “get out the paper,” but getting the paper out is still the main thing.

In the business of getting the paper out, two things have not changed. Next to the cardinal credo of the best newspaper man I have known, the simple rule that “no newspaper story, however good, however ‘hot,’ is worth anything until it is in type,” the most valuable thing a newspaper can have is men with the ability to recognize and the initiative and the will to do the needful thing at the right moment. No machine can ever replace that sort of newspapering. No system, no eight-hour day, no school of journalism can ever turn it out. No newspaper can make the grade without it.

Lee Alford was that sort of newspaper man.

INQUIRY OPENS IN BUS’ RIVER PLUNGE; 14 DIE

VIRGINIA CRASH DRIVER MAY HAVE DIED BEFORE DROP THROUGH BRIDGE

HOPEWELL, Va., Dec. 23—An inquest was ordered today for Thursday in the deaths of 14 persons who lost their lives in the plunge of a bus through an open drawbridge into the Appomattox River yesterday….

Five of those who died in the river’s icy water were identified before daybreak today as Virginians and North Carolinians.

Mayor D.L. Elder and Commonwealth’s Attorney John Goodman agreed this morning that the inquest would be a mere “formality” in the full investigation as to why the Atlantic Greyhound bus smashed through a safety rail and into the draw which had been opened for a tug and barge.

“All we can do is to say they are dead, sign the death certificates and say it was an accident,” Mayor Elder declared.

Officials ordered an autopsy today to check the possibility that the driver of the bus was dead before the machine plunged into the stream.

Shortly after the bus was raised last night, D.D. McAfee, district superintendent for the bus line at Raleigh N. C., said: “I can’t believe that boy was alive when the bus went over.” He said the driver, L.G. Alford, 38, of Five Points, N.C., had been employed six years, with five years prior experience. He had an excellent record, McAfee said.

Arthur Clark, Richmond photographer, said the machine’s brakes were fully set when it was hauled from the water 12 hours after the accident yesterday….

The bus was raised from the water more than 12 hours after Capt. Lacy McNair, the bridge tender, heard it crash through the guard rail and saw it hurtle 20 feet, into the river channel with its screaming cargo.

Men worked with ice-coated ropes in a snowstorm which became a blizzard with low temperatures, while Salvation Army lassies and Red Cross nurses served them with hot coffee and soup.

“It’s the worst thing I ever saw—bodies were tumbled in with baggage and chairs were torn loose from the floor,” said Bill Henderson, Hopewell policeman, after inspecting the bus….

The bus hurtled down the 200-yard approach to the draw span at 3:55 yesterday morning. Captain McNair standing on the open pivot span looking downstream as a tug and its barge tow started through, heard the bus crash through the guard rail.

“It was a half minute I will never forget as long as I live,” he said. “I will always remember those screams and cries of women and children on the bus as it hung on the edge of the bridge before the final plunge to the icy waters of the river.”

The bridge tender was standing approximately 30 feet from the point where the bus plunged nose first into the water. It trembled a minute and submerged amid bubbles of air….

The water was between 25 and 30 feet deep where the bus sunk. After bringing up one body and badly cutting his hand the diver made several steel cables fast to the bus and it was raised by a large crane on the bridge and placed on a floating barge as the 80-foot draw span was swung aside. The bodies were brought out one by one, placed in baskets on the snow covered deck and hoisted to waiting ambulances and funeral cars on the bridge. No effort at identification was made until the bodies were taken to funeral establishments.
