With all the current scandals at the highest levels how can the subordinates feel they were being protected, and the US Army has their best interest at hand? Currently we have the national director of the CIA Ret. General Petreaus, under current investigation for a national security scandal and an admitted affair. I would like to know how many soldiers under his command, during his entire service to the Army has he punished, and kicked soldiers out the Army for sexual harassment or committing adultery? Can the Army explain the lack of enforcing standards? Rather they have established a double standard. Now you have Col James H. Johnson III, who was recently convicted of this related issue. In a recent article in the Stars and Stripes, June 14, 2012, Nancy Montgomery wrote "KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — Col. James Johnson, convicted of fraud, bigamy, and conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman, was sentenced Thursday to a reprimand and a $300,000 fine.” This Officer was in charge for the morale, welfare and protection of more than 20,000 soldiers under his command during the time of war. How can the Army put trust in these high ranking officials? The Army currently has another case pending, in a recent article in the Army Times, Associated Press, Michael Biesecker, “FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Defense lawyers representing an Army general facing sexual misconduct charges aimed Thursday to paint his primary accuser

Essay About Sexual Harassment Assault Response Prevention (SHARP)

The purpose of this essay is to explain what SHARP does and the effect it has had on the Army. Sexual Harassment/Assault and Response Prevention (SHARP) is the Army’s united effort of combating sexual violence among Soldiers. Though sexual assault happens all around us every day, it is our job to keep it out of our ranks. SHARP implements procedures that make Soldiers aware of the risks and threats within our Army. Telling them how they can help combat sexual violence. The program is good for gaining a cultural change to stop sexual assault. The Army is a family that functions on respect, trust, and integrity. Through SHARP, the Army is fighting to assure that we maintain this bond amongst each other. SHARP has introduced more training and has made the Army a better work environment.

According to the Army’s Sexual assault website, “All Soldiers are required to participate in a three-hour classroom facilitated discussion using a slide presentation and two training videos”. This gives Soldiers the opportunity to discuss what the standard is. Which is a zero-tolerance for sexual violence. These discussions give soldiers all the information they need on SHARP. Soldiers can hear and visualize what the Army expects of its Soldiers. Forcing Soldiers to remember and apply the concepts of SHARP. Training this way makes it easy to get the point of SHARP through to Soldiers. It shows Soldiers how serious SHARP is in the Army. SHARP gives us the tools we need to intervene. This is the reason for such a drastic increase in Soldiers reporting sexual assault. This makes it easy to eliminate the risks. Through training, we can grow as an Army and a family.

We should not have to worry about violence amongst Soldiers. That is why we have enemies. Through the SHARP program, Soldiers won’t have to worry about sexual violence, work will become peaceful. Soldiers will be allowed to focus on their tasks at hand instead of predators. When we can trust each other with no worries of assault, we function better as a unit and a team. Soldiers work better with the trust between one another. This keeps tensions low and makes it easy to complete the mission. With this, we function at significantly higher rates, making us a greater mission capable Army, better capable of achieving the tasks at hand. We are one united fighting force and we can’t function to our maximum capacities with the constant fear of sexual assault in the military.

In conclusion, the Army has continued to make constant changes involving sexual assault. SHARP has continuously provided the training to allow soldiers to effectively combat sexual violence in the Army. It has also provided the basis for the Army to become more efficient for us to develop as a family.

Sharp Program to Prevent Sexual Harassment

SHARP is a program that helps prevent incidents of sexual harassment and sexual assault. The mission of every soldier in the Army is to ensure that everyone respects everyone at all times under any circumstances. SHARP is also a program within the military that attempts to mitigate sexual harassment to the best of its abilities. However, it is still a major concern within the army because it is something that happens to be a reoccurring issue. Although this particular program is implemented within the Army, sexual harassment is still a reoccurring issue. It is already difficult enough being in the Military but even more so if someone becomes victim to sexual harassment. I feel that SHARP is a great program with good intentions however I feel like it is not taken very seriously because it is not something that is regularly enforced.

In fact, I have seen it where instead of helping the victim for what has happened to them, the soldiers around them including the leaders make them feel ashamed for standing up for what happened. This creates a toxic work environment for those soldiers and makes them feel unmotivated to even be at work let alone be in the Army. At that point what leaders fail to realize is that by them discrediting them or out casting them because of the incident that happened they just showed the rest of the soldiers that if that were to happen to any of them its best not to say anything because then they are going to be treated differently and maybe even frowned upon for snitching. It is a shame to see this happening in the ranks of our leaders let alone the lower enlisted. But how can we expect the junior enlisted to abide by certain rules if we have leaders that cannot lead by example.

Many people that I encounter join the Army because of fellowship that they wanted to feel within their unit. When we have issues like this those, we as leaders are still not able to ensure that it does not occur we should ask our self what we could do better. At this point, it is not a matter of what rank they are, who they know or how well they work. It is about doing the right thing following our Army values, and our morals as human beings. If we let one person get away with it regardless of rank or whom they know, then we are telling everyone else that it is okay for them to do it. Although we want to complain, as to why this issue is a reoccurring. We are doing it to our self, self-harming the Army of individuals who should not get away with sexual harassment.

We train to lead and lead to train, but how can we be those leaders if we are still allowing this to happen within our ranks, our companies our units. As soldiers, we should all be looking out for one another not harassing each other. Especially given the fact that if we were in a combat situation how are we suppose to be able to depend on one another if that trust has been broken prior to that incident. If soldier cannot trust the individual directly beside them in a combat situation, the fight has already been lost. We are all brothers and sisters within the army its time we start acting accordingly and begin holding each other accountable for our actions.
