Chitin is one of the more common resources that are quite easy to obtain in Ark, but later on, you may want to find ways to get a large amount for crafting several items.
With chitin, you will be able to create not only certain items but also other resources that are vital for, later on, especially Cementing Paste.
This resource appears to be the exoskeleton or shells of certain creatures in Ark, notably obtainable by killing and harvesting insect creatures.
How to Farm Chitin?
Chitin is usually obtained when you kill and harvest the corpse of insect-like or underwater shelled creatures.
Depending on what kind of creature you harvest the body of, the amount of Chitin may vary, larger creatures providing more than the smaller ones.
You may also find Chitin when accessing the inventory of Loot Beacons which can be found all over some of the maps.
Best Way to Farm Chitin
A Megatherium may take a bit of a longer process to tame but they can harvest a good deal of Chitin from corpses.
Sabertooth is also good for harvesting Chitin but a Therizinosaurus with a higher amount of harvest levels, allowing it to farm an extra amount of resources.
Using a Chainsaw has proven to be one of the best methods when it comes to harvesting Chitin, as long as you have the materials to craft, repair, and fuel it.

Chitin Uses
Chitin is used for crafting different items in the game, notably the Chitin Set, some saddles, and Cementing Paste.
Cementing Paste is a much-demanded resource and to craft a lot of it, you will need a bunch of Chitin and Stone.
The Chitin Set is one of the earlier sets that offer players good protection when they have not yet advanced to metal items.
Chitin is also a resource that can substitute Keratin, filling in for any missing amounts when crafting.

Verdict
Chitin is not that hard of a resource to find, but it does take some time and effort to get a good amount, similar to Keratin.
Depending on where your base is and what map you are on, you may decide to find a good spot that has nearby sources of Chitin.
When you are low on Chitin, some items can still be crafted using Keratin as a replacement, but this isn’t possible with the Chitin Set.

Chitin (Ky-tin) is a resource in ARK: Survival Evolved. It's a polymer and characteristic component of exoskeletons, radulae, beaks, shells and various other physical structures in organisms throughout history.
Gathering[]
Chitin can be acquired by harvesting corpses with most tools and dinosaurs.
The most efficient way to harvest Chitin is by using a tamed Megatherium,
Direwolf,
Sabertooth or
Therizinosaur (headbutt with delicate collection leveled up) with high melee damage. A tamed
Diplocaulus can also be used to gather Chitin by killing
Trilobites. Another highly efficient tool for harvesting it is the
Metal Hatchet with the metal pike yielding similar efficiency. The pike holds the advantage of more precise hits against small chitin-droppers like
Meganeuras. Chitin can be harvested with a
Stone Hatchet and
Picks as well; other low level items will only occasionally harvest Chitin.
Another efficient way to farm Chitin seems to be killing scorpions and spiders in caves with a Direwolf skilled on melee damage. A
Sabertooth will gather just as efficiently but has lower base damage. This method can grant up to 500 Chitin in 10 minutes. Another good way to farm Chitin is to kill
Trilobites,
Meganeuras or
Titanomyrmas at the beach and surrounding areas, harvesting them with a
Hatchet or a
Sabertooth. If you are in a forest or swamp, you can also kill a random dinosaur and leave the corpse. Often a swarm of
Meganeura will come to the corpse, and you can kill them all at once to gather chitin. Farming
Karkinos on Valguero or Aberration can be an effective way of gathering large amounts of Chitin, so long as you have a strong enough tame.
Another way to farm Chitin is to kill a creature, and let the corpse rot without harvesting it. In some regions, this will attract insects. Using a Beelzebufo to kill/harvest the insects will not only result in a much more Chitin, but your frog will also directly produce a sizable amount of cementing paste as well.
Additionally, in Crystal Isles, Chitin can be harvested from Anthills in large quantities, as well as from the Titanomyrma and
Dung Beetles that spawn around them.

Notes/Trivia[]
- Chitin is a polysaccharide of N-acetylglucosamine, a derivative of glucose (a common sugar).
- Normally Chitin is colorless. The known browning (as well as the strength) of the shells of insects is caused by sclerotin, a structural protein.
- The shells of crustaceans and mollusks are formed of a composite of chitin and calcium carbonate.
- Chitin is also used as food to tame the Archaeopteryx

Due to the current crafting system, some items may use Chitin, Keratin, or Shell Fragment in their crafting recipe. This means that any craft item that lists "Chitin, Keratin, or Shell Fragment" as the material will combine these resources into a single material. For example, if an item requires 30 "Chitin, Keratin, or Shell Fragment", then 10 ×
Shell Fragment
,10 ×
Keratin & 10 ×
Chitin, or any other combination adding up to 30 will be used to craft the item. This page allows the recipes in the information box to have a valid link under "Chitin, Keratin, or Shell Fragment".
