Dark Souls 3: 10 Things You Never Noticed In Lothric Castle
Dark Souls 3 has a much larger focus on gothic themes than previous games. Lothric Castle is the best example of this, incorporating spires and plenty of elaborate decorations.
RELATED: Dark Souls: The 10 Hardest Achievements To Get
This is also why Lothric Castle is one of the first and last locations in Dark Souls 3. It sets the game's tone and sets up a difficult zone for players to overcome. While defeating the area's various bosses and enemies, plenty of details might have escaped the eyes of casual and even veteran Dark Souls players. Here are 10 things players never noticed in Lothric Castle in Dark Souls 3.
10 Enter High Lothric Early Game
After listing the bonfire at Firelink Shrine, players must travel to the High Wall of Lothric to slay Vordt and travel to the Undead Settlement. At least, that is what the game guides the player to do.
When obtaining the banner to reach the Undead Settlement, players can opt to kill the NPC instead, summoning the Dancer of the Boreal Valley and starting her boss fight much earlier than normal. Killing her will unlock the higher section of Lothric Castle much earlier in the playthrough, although players won't be able to get past Dragonslayer Armor until they slay all other Lords of Cinder first.
9 Dragons Are Pus Of Man Illusions
One new enemy type introduced in Dark Souls 3 is the Pus of Man. These black serpents spew out of hollows and deal massive amounts of damage to players by wailing their bodies around.

It seems they are also capable of creating illusions. At a certain section of Lothric Castle, players will need to cross a bridge with two dragons guarding it. Defeating these dragons involves killing a Pus of Man who is creating the illusion. Alternatively, players can use a bow and shoot the hind leg of the right dragon to kill both illusions from safety.
8 Adjacent To Firelink Shrine
The location of Firelink Shrine has been debated amongst Souls fans since the game released, but exploring Lothric Castle makes it clear where the hub area is located.
While not directly visible, the mountain range that Firelink Shrine is at can be seen near the higher sections of Lothric Castle. When at Firelink Shrine, players can see the back portion of the Twin Princes' arena, which lines up with what players can see at Lothric Castle. Players can see the arena for the last Lord of Cinder right when they start a playthrough just by looking up.
7 Hidden Version Of Tutorial Zone
Lothric Castle has an optional garden section where players can fight Oceiros, the Consumed King. Slaying this boss grants a large sum of Souls, but it also hides a special area.
Running past his arena will reveal a room that grants a Path of the Dragon Gesture, which is needed to access Archdragon Peak. Beyond that corpse is a wall that players can hit, revealing a path to Untended Graves. This is a dark and twisted variant of the tutorial zone, complete with a tougher version of Gundyr.
6 Warriors Of Sunlight
The Warriors of Sunlight Covenant can be found at the higher sections of Lothric Castle, right before the Dragonslayer Armor boss fight.
Players will need to navigate up a ladder to the left of the boss arena, traverse the rooftops, and make their way back to the arena to find the remains of a statue that acts as an alter for the Warriors of Sunlight. Here, players can turn in Sunlight Medals to receive Covenant rewards. It isn't exactly hidden, but it takes enough work to reach that most players likely missed it.
5 Greirat's Fate
Part of Greirat's quest involves him looting locations for the player. It starts well, but Greirat quickly gets himself into trouble as the quest progresses.
Unfortunately, his attempts to loot Lothric Castle prove fatal to the expert thief. With the dozens of enemies and Pilgrim Butterflies roaming the skies, it's easy to see why. Regardless, his corpse can be found near the rooftops of the Grand Archives before players reach the Twin Princes.
4 Lothric Cares Not For Linking The Fire
Fans have argued if the Twin Princes, Lothric and Lorian, aren't true Lords of Cinder as they refused to link the first flame. The explanation for this becomes clearer when players look more closely at the game's item descriptions and lore.
RELATED: Dark Souls: 15 Hardest Bosses In The Series, Ranked
Lothric's tutor was opposed to linking the fire for reasons unknown. Some speculate that this tutor was Pontiff Sulyvahn, but it would make more sense if it was Aldia, Scholar of the First Sin from Dark Souls 2—someone who was very much opposed to linking the flame in that game. Regardless of whoever it is, Lothric being given the task of linking the flame but refusing to do so seems to be enough to classify him as a Lord of Cinder, hence why players must kill him and Lorian to progress through the game.
3 Pilgrim Butterflies Control Dragonslayer Armor
Strange flying creatures surround Lothric Castle when the eclipse appears later in Dark Souls 3. They seem harmless until players reach the second phase of the Dragonslayer Armor's fight when they begin launching projectiles at the player.
These creatures are called Pilgrim Butterflies and are controlling the Dragonslayer themselves. Reading the description of Dragonslayer's Soul mentions the "great hunts" the Pilgrim Butterflies would embark on with their old masters. It is likely the lack of a master forced them to find a replacement which, in this case, is the Dragonslayer Armor. It also explains why they disappear after the boss is slain.
2 Civil War Theory
Tons of dead bodies litter Lothric Castle for little reason. Fans have devised many theories as to why this is, one of which is a civil war.
Knights at Lothric Castle either wear red or blue apparel. Many serpent statues can be found in the Castle's various rooms, leading some to believe that a shift of religion has shifted from the gods to serpent men. This might have created a schism amongst the castle's inhabitants, hence why so many corpses exist in the area.
1 Culture Around Sacrifice
Statues that depict headless knights or soldiers decapitating themselves can also be found scattered throughout Lothric Castle. Regardless of a civil war, this is a culture devoted to sacrifice.
As to why this is, the end of the world has likely removed any purpose Lothric knights originally had. This shift likely made much of Lothric hollow, resorting to them creating a culture around sacrifice when their purpose is either fulfilled or made irrelevant. It also explains why groups of dead knights can be seen decapitated throughout the castle.

How to get there
After defeating the Dancer of the Boreal Valley, use the Basin of Vows. Then climb up the ladder that unfurls.
At the intersection at the top of the ladder, go forward, up the steps into the castle. Make a left if you wish to go on the path to go to the Consumed King's Garden and, in turn, the Untended Graves.
When you've reach the top of the steps, both a Lothric Knight and a Devout of the Deep will come for you. The Devout will prioritize buffing the knight, making the mage extremely vulnerable, so target him first. After you've dealt with them, grab the Soul at the altar. Make a right at the altar and go up the steps guarded by two more Lothric Knights. You can catch a breather in the next area as it includes a bonfire.
Lothric Castle bonfire
From this bonfire room, you have two paths to choose from. Using the doorway opposite the doorway you came in will lead you further along the critical path. Making a right will lead you back to the intersection at the start of this area.
Staying on the critical path will lead you to a room with a fireplace straight ahead and a balcony on the left. A Titanite Chunk is at the corpse on the balcony, while an Armor of Prayer set is at the right side of the room.
While facing the balcony, look right to find the next path and a squad of Hollow Soldiers. These include archers and soldiers who will throw potions to temporarily disable your estus flasks. Go up the various ascending sets of stairs.
Look around the three small circular sections of this part of the castle exterior for three Titanite Chunks and a Soul.
There’s also a room to your right after going up the first set of stairs. Inside is a Twinkling Titanite and an ambush by a Winged Knight from above. This knight is particularly fast and brutal with its combos, but if you toggle on the lock-on, his aggressiveness will allow you to swing around him for attacks at the rear.
After defeating it, climb up the ladder in the room. Hit the far left wall to access a secret area. Grab the Winged Knight Gear and Sacred Bloom Shield.
Head back to the main path, where the stairs continue to ascend and more Hollow Soldiers come after you. This path will curve right. After you pass the second arch, look to the left for the next bonfire. As you approach the bonfire, there will be an Ember to your left.
Dragon Barracks bonfire
Go through the arch next to bonfire and go up the stairs on the right. Make a U-turn to the left to a ledge overlooking the bonfire. Grab the Greatlance after defeating the Lothric Knight guarding it.
Turn around and approach the bridge on the right. As the second Lothric Wyvern flies in to join the other Wyvern, jump off the bridge to the upper level of the two-tiered area under the bridge, specifically on side of the bridge furthest from the Wyverns. Grab the Titanite Chunk on the ledge before dropping down. Note that there is also an Undead Bone Shard at the upper ledge on the opposite side.
This area has two Pus of Men, some Hollow Soldiers and a Winged Knight. Grab the two Titanite Chunks at the bottom level underneath the bridge. While facing in the direction of the dragon, turn left and take on a Pus of Men. Around the corner are two Twinkling Titanites. Then head to the opposite side of this narrow section and go through the doorway. In the next room, look for the glowing light behind the boxes. Break the boxes and grab the three Lightning Urns.
Go through the next doorway, make a right and chase down the Crystal Lizard for two Twinkling Titanites. Prepare for an ambush by a couple Hollow Assassins. Three more assassins will appear as you continue along this path. There’s also a Soul on the ledge overlooking the Dragon Barracks bonfire in the distance.
Going up the stairs will lead you to a Winged Knight. Go along the path where the Winged Knight came from and grab the Sniper Crossbow and Sniper Bolts.
To get back on the critical path, drop down again to the first ledge below the bridge. Head left, where you'll find four Hollow Soldiers. Make the first available right turn through the doorway and up one more flight of steps. Grab the Soul by the skinny column and a Raw Gem to the right.
The downward stairs to the right of the doorway you just passed through leads to a Boreal Outrider Knight. It moves on fours like Vordt of the Boreal Valley and is very agile. Rely on your lock-on to get behind the knight. When defeated, grab the Spirit Tree Crest Shield, three Titanite Scales and the Twinkling Titanite in the room.
Leave the room and head toward the inner castle entrance. Grab the Ember near the entrance. You can't go through the entrance directly yet. Instead, go through the doorway at the right of the entrance. You'll enter a large three-tier room. Grab the three Firebombs at the first floor. Climb the ladder on the right. Grab the Soul on the ledge and the Titanite Chunk in the outdoor area past the doorway on the left.
Go back into the large three-tier room and attack the Wyvern claw jammed through the doorway. After a few hits, the claw will turn into a large black pus. Use distance attacks like arrows and firebombs to kill it. This will kill both Wyverns in the process. Grab the two Titanite Chunks, the two Embers and the Large Titanite Shards. Now you can explore the wide pathway that the Wyverns were protecting with their fire attacks. There you’ll find an Ember, a Refined Gem, a Titanite Scale, and six Lightning Urns. Then return to the large three-tier room.
Deal with the Hollow Soldiers as you ascend the stairs. At the top of the steps, make a right toward the reading area. Grab the Pale Pine Resin at the corner and attack the Mimic chest. Grab the Symbol of Avarice and three Titanite Scales after defeating it. There are also some Titanite Scales in the tiny courtyard outside the reading area.
Go through the doorway opposite the doorway leading to the courtyard. You are now in the inner castle foyer. Walk forward and activate the switch. This will open the entrance to make all future visits easier. Turn right, grab the Soul and make a U-shaped path around the foyer, dealing with the Lothric Knight and Lothric Mage along the way.
Exit the foyer at the opposite side from which you entered. Make a left and grab the Sunlight Medal on the corpse. Note the elevator to the left. This shortcut will take you back to the beginning of Lothric Castle. Go past the corpse with the Sunlight Medal and make a left around the building.
Climb up the ladder. Grab the Titanite Chunk at one of the corners of the rooftop. Cross the narrow connecting rooftop and take on the Hollow Soldiers. Go into the library and take the ladder down. Grab the Knight’s Ring in the library and head down the walkway guarded by the Lothric Knight.
Enter the next room and grab the Praise The Sun pose by the Altar of Sunlight and the three Titanite Scales in the chest. By offering Sunlight Medals to the Altar, you can improve your current covenant faction. Opening the doors ahead will bring you back to the area with the elevator.
Before going through the foggy gate to the next boss fight, enter the doorway to the right. Go to the second level, grab the Titanite Scale in the chest on the right and exit left to the narrow ledge. Make a right and grab the Red Tearstone Ring. Go left and drop from the break in the ledge. Drop down to a lower rooftop and grab the Caitha's Charm. Drop down again and take on two Lothric Knights. Go down the path and make two lefts. This will bring you back to the foyer. Go up the steps, make a left, then a right to return to the area right before the foggy door.
Dragonslayer Armour boss fight
Short version: Aim for its right side, watch out for its right side.
Tactics (first phase): This boss is all about brute force. Its shield makes its left side practically invincible so its only frontal opening is on its right. There's just a matter of defending yourself against its aggressive blade strikes. Its most common attack is a three-hit combo that starts with two wide sweeps and then a downward blow. It also uses backhanded combos with its shield. It is likely that its various attacks will destroy the stone barriers on both sides of the map. Be mindful of this as you might get knocked off.
Tactics (second phase): You know the Dragonslayer Armour is in its second phase when it briefly falls to its knees. You can get a couple swings in before it gets up. The boss is not electrified, making its first phase combos all the more powerful. If you're bold, you can roll through its new, long reaching, wide arch attack or you can just keep your distance. Be sure to get out of the boss' way when it holds its blade straight up. It's about to deal a massive downward blow. Another attack that is easy to anticipate is the dragging uppercut, since the Dragonslayer Armour needs a running start. If you need a breather, make a brief retreat to the fountain in the middle of the map. You can buy yourself a couple seconds to recover if you're on the opposite side of the fountain in relation to the boss. Lastly, watch out for the red ghost skulls raining from the red dragon skeletons.
Dragonslayer Armour bonfire
After defeating the Dragonslayer Armour, go through the next arch, down the stairs, then up the stairs. The next bonfire is past the next arch.

Lothric Castle Entrance
After defeating three of the Lords of Cinder, the voice of Emma, High Priestess of Lothric will fill your ears. It is time to find Lothric, the last Lord, who has been hiding in the castle this whole time. Upon returning to Emma, you’ll find her dying, beseeching you to knock some sense into the lord. As she falls, she will drop the Basin of Vows, a tool needed to enter the castle. However, before you can interact with the ladder in front of you, someone else will appear to block your path - The Dancer of the Boreal Valley.
Boss: Dancer of the Boreal Valley
The Dancer combines the traits of many enemies you’ve faced in your battles - from the grace of the Pontiff Knights, to the agility of the Carthus Skeletons, and the sheer force of the Outrider Knight. Wielding a flaming curved sword, The Dancer can be a hard opponent to read, as it sifts and weaves intricately from one move to the next. One thing to note is that you’ll need fire resist, and possibly dark magic as well for the latter half of the fight.
The Dancer employs many spinning and slashing moves, and some can be easier to detect than others. When the boss slowly raises its sword above its head, it’s winding up for a powerful vertical smash that deals heavy fire damage, but is thankfully easier to dodge to the left or right. Another lethal move begins when the Dancer plants her sword into the ground, and will quickly weave it in a path around the front and side of her, before the trail erupts into highly damaging flames. If you move quick enough, you can get behind the trail, and attack from behind while the boss waits for the fires to erupt. However, this boss can quickly pivot to slice and smash behind her, so be ready to keep mobile after getting a few hits in. There are also many wide slicing attacks that the Dancer can perform when low to the ground, covering a wide arc that must be quickly dodged or blocked.
Some of the more devastating attacks can be extremely subtle, as the Dancer writhes upward, balling her open hand into a fist, before making a short lunging grab. If it connects, you’ll be skewered and roasted on her blade, so avoid getting in front of the boss whenever possible. She’ll make a small grunt before doing this grab, so keep your senses alert at all times. And if you see the Dancer bend down and put her open hand to her mouth, backpedal furiously, as she’ll ignite an explosive flame in the ground in front of her that has a massive blast on all sides.
At around half health, the Dancer will summon dark energy around her, drawing a new sword of dark magic in her other hand. Now she’ll be able to dual-wield to devastating effect, with new twists on old moves - starting with an extremely long chain of spinning slashes in a forward arc, ending with a large spin attack that hits on all sides. She’ll likely start her next phase with this, and use it again soon. If you see it starting, get behind her at all costs, as she can quickly catch up to any backpedaling making it very hard to survive the assault. She may now plant either sword in the ground to release a trail of flame or dark energy - both should be avoided. Other attacks include spreading her arms wide to bring both blades across and up in front of her, launching you into the air. Beware of her other combos, as she slices across several times in front of her with both weapons, ending with a dual smash in the ground in front.
As long as you keep mobile, dodge in past the spinning slashes, and get your hits in before retreating, you should be able to outlast the dance of death. When the Dancer falls, you’ll gain the Soul of the Dancer, and access to the Bonfire, and the way to Lothric Castle will finally be revealed.
Covenant Opportunity: Mound Makers (Again)
If you head to the entrance of the cathedral where you fought the Curse-Rotted Greatwood (outside the door leading to the now giant pit), you'll find another summon sign from Sirris. She needs help killing her grandfather once and for all - Holy Knight Hodrick. Accept the summon and the two of you will face him in the Pit of Hollows. If you are victorious, refresh Firelink Shrine and Sirris will appear here and ask to be your knight. Agree and she'll be summonable for the final three main boss fights of the game - and you'll receive the Mound-makers Covenant insignia if you missed out on it before. Refuse and you'll find her Hollow in the Pit of Hollows and have to kill her. What's more, if you return to the Pit of Hollows in your world, you'll find Hodrick has left his full Sunset Armor, including the Sunset Helm, Sunset Gauntlets, and Sunset Leggings. You can also travel back to Firelink Shrine and head down towards the Iudex Gundyr Bonfire, taking a left where that Hollow stands looking out over a cliff. Behind him, someone has left Hodrick's Sunset Shield at a gravestone.
Now that you’re finally up here, there are two paths you can take. Going left leads outside to an optional area - the Consumed King’s Garden. This area is fairly short, but difficult, and therefore worth your time to explore, and we recommend checking it out before proceeding through Lothric Castle. However, it’s all up to you in the end, so feel free to keep reading to explore the rest of the castle, or check out the garden here.
The path going up from the ladder leads to a tomb where a cleric and a red-eyed Lothric Knight are. The cleric will seek to aid the knight by increasing his strength and healing, so be sure to take him out while keeping your eyes on the knight. Check the body the knight was kneeling at to find a Soul of a Crestfallen Knight. The elevator to the left of this room doesn’t work, forcing you to go right onto a stairway. The stairs are patrolled by two Lothric Knights, one with a spear and the other with a sword close behind - so try not to get caught between them, and lure one back into the tomb if you have to. You won’t have much time to take on the first by himself, as the other knight will patrol into the tomb, so be quick and decisive. Don’t travel too far up the short stairs, or you’ll risk getting a Cleric around the corner into the battle, and he’ll imbue both knights with more strength.
Once they have been taken out, continue up the path, and don’t miss a cleric hiding in a crumpled heap near the doorway, as he may spring up to ambush you. Your reward for clearing the rooms of knights is a new Bonfire, with an added shortcut to get you back to the previous bonfire easily. In the room beyond, look for a chest on the right holding a full Prayer Set, including a Hood of Prayer, Robe of Prayer, and Skirt of Prayer. The path on the left leads to a balcony and to a corpse holding a Titanite Chunk. It is here where Hollow soldiers are massing - who are much more durable than those you fought below. Look above as you ascend the steps - it seems those odd praying Hollows that turned tree-like finally grew their wings! At the top of the stairs are ramparts and barricades, a sitting archer is on the stairs to your left, while another Hollow waits behind the barriers. Behind the barrier on the left is another corpse holding a Titanite Chunk, as three weak Hollows try to leap over the walls to ambush you.
Forsake the stairs going up for the moment, and head inside the door on the right. Enter carefully, because a Winged Knight wielding way too many axes is waiting on the platform above, and will seek to ambush you should you go for the ladder. Get behind his wild axe swings and go for a backstab - but watch he doesn’t roll his girth away to perform a lightning storm. When he’s dead, grab the Twinkling Titanite behind the ladder before carefully heading up. Nothing here but a stone wall? Wrong - look for the outline of an arch, and strike the wall to reveal a passage to an adjoining walkway. A corpse is looking at a painting of a Winged Knight - and what luck, he’s holding a full Winged Knight Set, including the Winged Knight Helm, Winged Knight Armor, Winged Knight Gauntlets, and Winged Knight Leggings. Don’t forget the Sacred Bloom Shield to the left before returning to the ramparts.
Going up the stairs past the barricade, a Hollow on the archway above will start lobbing anti-healing grenades, making this next area a no-heal zone. If you have ranged means - take him out. Otherwise, there are two archers on the right, with a Hollow wielding a greataxe waiting out of view. Be sure to carefully engage him before moving down to the lower walkway where a Hollow with a halberd and another sword-wielder are. Once their forces are dead, loot the Large Soul of a Weary Warrior on the left rampart, and 2 Titanite Chunk by a dozing Hollow on the right.
Proceed up the steps where the archers and greataxe Hollow were with caution. Know that the grenadier Hollow above you isn’t alone, as you’ll hear the grunting of a Winged Knight hiding on the rampart above - but thankfully he won’t drop down, and even better: A new Bonfire is waiting for you just to the left. Grab an Ember in the corner of the Bonfire area, before choosing whether to head left or right.
All paths lead up to the main moat leading to the proper castle - and it’s guarded by a dragon. Hold off for a moment and explore the left side, where a red-eyed Lothric Knight lurks among the corpses of his comrades. Kill him, and check the corpse he was kneeling at to find a Greatlance.
Now it’s time to approach the dragon - or should I say dragons. As soon as you approach the bridge, another dragon will swoop in on the left, and both of them will light the place up. Immediately dive onto the upper ledge of the moat, and get under the bridge to avoid the blast. From here you have two ways to go: heading into the lower moat leads to the right, and the upper moat path heads off left. Let’s revisit that Winged Knight on the top of the rampart first. Head right, and grab a Titanite Chunk before dropping down into the lower moat, and as soon as you do, rush the Hollow in the corner before he can transform into a monstrosity. There’s another wandering Hollow to the left who will do the same, so charge him down, and grab the 2 Titanite Chunk in the middle of the moat, and search the far corner for 2 Twinkling Titanite. Now head into the small hall up the stairs and grab 3 Lightning Urn from a corpse behind some boxes, and exit out into a corridor leading up.
Here you’ll find a Crystal Lizard on the left carrying 2 Twinkling Titanite, with a Hollow Thief on the right. He’ll try to bait you to him with throwing knives, and if you give into him or the lizard, another Thief will jump down from the above wall. He’s not alone, as you reach the end of the corridor two more will jump down behind you, and a third back where you first came up - so be ready to face them before moving onto the rampart. Grab the Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier before you climb the ramparts to face the Winged Knight, and the Hollow behind him. When both have fallen, grab your reward on the broken arch - a Sniper Crossbow and 11 Sniper Bolt.
Now it’s time to take the other path, but if you want to try being brave, run the length of the bridge before diving to the upper moat on the other side to find an Undead Bone Shard. On the upper moat closest to the Bonfire, head left and up the stairs into an ambush. A lone crossbowman is waiting on a ledge further up, enticing you as a Hollow up on a ledge to the right will cascade anti-healing grenades at you, meanwhile a halberdier will rush past the sniper to attack you, followed by a greataxe-wielding Hollow. Try and move back out of sight of the archer to take them on in smaller groups or one at a time, before finally moving back to finish the archer. There’s a small stairs leading into the building here, but you can also head further down the path to find two Lothric Knights kneeling in an alcove. Attacking both at once is unwise, so pull one with a throwing knife and lure him back, before returning for the second. Beware the one on the right, as he wields a greatsword and is prone to enchanting it - so attack defensively and wait for an opening - as he has no defense. You won’t be able to get the item above them - but when you do, it’ll be better to jump down into an empty alcove than one teeming with knights.
Moving inside, you’ll enter an open room with stairs leading down, and a clear view of one of the dragons guarding the gate, as well as a corpse at a pillar holding a Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier. Grab the Raw Gem on the balcony where the grenadier Hollow was earlier, and look for some stairs leading down. Be warned - there’s an Outrider Knight here and he’s stronger than the one you faced in the Undead Settlement tower. The tactics remain the same - get behind him and stay behind him, and dodge out of the way of his lunging slashes he likes to perform. Killing him will yield the Irithyll Rapier, and there’s even more loot for you down here: four whole chests - and none of them Mimics! From left to right they contain 2 Twinkling Titanite, 1 Twinkling Titanite, 1 Titanite Scale, and a Spirit Tree Crest Shield.
Now it’s time to make a mad dash for freedom past the Dragon. Ignore the main gate and the item near it, and look for an open door to the left of the Dragon. Pick a time when he’s not gusting fire, and sprint for the doorway. This room is incredibly dark, illuminated only by the glow of Hollows on the ledge above you. Note that the room is filled with explosive barrels - and you may have guessed it, the Hollows will be lobbing firebombs at you. As you move up, note the ladder to the right, but ignore it as more Hollows are waiting above, including one who will lob more firebombs as you take the stairs. As you move to engage the first grenadier, several weak Hollows will try to rush you, so take care to face them on whatever side they leap out of. Continue climbing the stairs to take out the last Hollow, and head down the stairs on the left back to where the ladder was to clear out the others - including two who will come from a nearby balcony. Grab the Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier by the ladder, and note the claw of the dragon that’s jutting out of the doorway, teeming with monstrous mutations. As you hit it, the mutation will explode, taking over its host completely. The good news is it’s stationary, though still deadly. In addition to its mad swipes and open jaws, it will also belch curse slime at you, so be wary. Even on a dragon, it still carries its basic fear of fire - so use any fire weapons, pyromancy, or firebombs to stun it before running in and attacking, then backing off to repeat the process. Killing the mutation will kill the entire dragon, netting you 2 Titanite Chunk and 2 Ember. Note that the other dragon has gone silent - and you can just make out the mutation on its claw too.
Now head out the opposite doorway, and go right to wrap around the building, leading to a corpse holding a Titanite Chunk. This leads to a small platform with a corpse holding a Titanite Scale and the now silent dragon, so feel free to drop down and get the loot you couldn’t before, like the 6 Lightning Urn near the dragon’s face, the Refined Gem and Ember near the short stairs, and another Ember by the main closed gate.
To get behind the gate, return to the darkened explosive barrel room, and check behind the barrels on the main floor to find a corpse with 3 Black Firebomb. Head up the stairs and go right this time, watching for any more Hollows lurking in the shadows. A lantern-carrying Hollow will come in from the doorway on the right - so silence him before he can rouse the sleeping Hollows in this room. When all are dead, check the corner for a Pale Pine Resin, as well as a chest in the middle that’s of course a crawling Mimic in disguise. Kill it, and receive 3 Titanite Scale. The doorway the rallying Hollow came out of leads to a small area with two resting Hollow Thieves, and a corpse holding a Titanite Scale. Now enter the other doorway to find yourself on the other side of the main gate.
To open the gate, pull the lever in front of you, and note the red-eyed Lothric Knight standing downstairs to the right - and a Cleric approaching him to buff him up. There’s a Large Soul of a Weary Warrior by a ledge, but dropping down might put you up against a wall when facing this knight and his backup, so you may want to carefully enter through the main gate. There’s another cleric down here, and if he see’s you the Knight will know - but you can use this to your advantage to get him to charge out of the door and out of range of his friends. Attack carefully and get behind him to finish him before the Clerics can catch up and heal him, then head inside to finish them off. There’s an Ember on the left side of the first floor near some tombs. Head up the stairs and to the left to exit out into an outer area of the castle.
From here you have… a lot of options. Directly ahead lies the door to a boss, and you can just make out flaming wings over the arch. There’s also a path going right, a lift and a locked door to the left, and a ladder around the corner. There’s also a Sunlight Medal at the entrance to the lift - which leads all the way back down to the first room past the entrance to Lothric Castle where you fought the Dancer. Going up the ladder around the corner leads to a roof with a Titanite Chunk, and you can also cross the roof of the short bridge towards two crossbowmen, and another Hollow with a greataxe who will lumber out to engage you. Past them is a room with a ladder leading down. Here you can find a Knight’s Ring - and the doorway across the bridge is blocked by a red-eyed Lothric Knight holding a greatsword. Engage carefully, and then move into the room that holds the ruined - yet still functional - Altar of Sunlight. Praying here will let you turn in Sunlight Medals, and give you the Praise the Sun Emote. Praise it! There’s also a chest here that holds 3 Titanite Scale, and the door leads back to the open area you were just in.
The path to the right leads indoors to a large darkened church-type area. If to this point, you have not purchased any Dark Miracles from Irina or not even given her the Londor and Deep Braille Divine Tomes, Eygon can be summoned for the Dragonslayer Armour fight. Up on the right is a body holding 2 Rusted Coin, and a chest holding a Titanite Scale. The lift ahead isn’t functional, but there is a balcony off to the left where you can find a Red Tearstone Ring. If you’re feeling brave (or have a Silvercat Ring) look for a broken balcony section where you can drop down to the roof below. Remember the two kneeling knights you took care of earlier? You can get Caitha’s Chime that was above them - without having to deal with them afterwards!
There’s one last thing to worry about before the boss - the last remaining dragon, or whatever it is that has mutated from it. Next to the ladder is a broken section of the railing that leads directly down to the mutation. Fall down and get ready to duck left into the building before the thing can spit its cursed acid at you. Use the same tactics you used for the other monstrosity (i.e. firebombs or pyromancy) and run in slashing while it’s busy screaming. Killing it will gain you 2 Titanite Chunk and 2 Ember, and grab the Soul of a Crestfallen Knight dangling over the ledge. Inside is a chest - rather, a Mimic, that you’ll have to kill to get a Sunlight Straight Sword. Up the stairs is a corpse holding a Braille Divine Tome of Lothric, and leads to a ledge that will drop you off back in front of the now raised gate.
It’s time to approach the boss, so summon Eygon in the building to the right if you want, or Sirris to the left of the boss door (if you helped her out) - and proceed through the white fog to face the Dragonslayer Armour.
Boss: Dragonslayer Armour
As you enter the bridge arena you’ll see a massive flaming Pilgrim Butterfly leave the area, as the armor comes to life. In reality, the armor is being controlled by the floating enemy - but you’ll have to destroy the armor to stop the butterfly. What makes this harder than a simple one-on-one is that the Pilgrim Butterflies will start swooping down on the arena to loose a salvo of projectiles, or even laser blasts, requiring you to be quick on your feet and ready to evade multiple attacks on different fronts.
Despite this, the fight will otherwise play out much like fighting a regular (but beefed up) humanoid opponent. The armor will use lots of standard strikes, shield bashes, and change up its stance from one-handed to two for certain attacks. The Dragonslayer Armour is also quite adept at twisting its body to bring its axe around in impressive arcs, and shield slam the few areas it can’t reach with its weapon.
Because of it’s formidable dragonslaying skills - it will be striking with an electric charged weapon. This means that using standard plate armor may be detrimental in the long run, unless you can find good plate that resists lightning, or switch to lighter armor like the Abyss Watcher Set - and have a good lightning resist ring and shield to boot.
The Dragonslayer Armour will normally attack with very slow standard swings, following up with quicker shield strikes that you’ll need to get around to deal any damage - so watch its movements to figure out the best place to end up and attack from. If you see the armor put its shield away, it will raise its axe high to charge it with lightning before slamming it to the ground with an impressive blast that is best avoided altogether - just remember it has an impressive reach. It may also hold the axe in both hands - one hand on top of the blade - to rush at you with a leaping strike to crash down in front of its body. However, if he begins holding the axe behind his back and twisting away in a charge, he’s about to lunge forward with a large sweeping strong attack. One more two-handed attack consists of the armor plunging its blade into the ground, before charging forth - scraping it along in a line before slicing upwards at the last moment.
If you do enough damage, you may briefly stun the armor and force it to its knees - but don’t be fooled, the armor will be far from helpless. If you try and unload your attacks, you may not see it raise its axe in its hand, which it will quickly bring slamming down in front of it to catch you unaware, so don’t be fooled, and attack from a different angle if you can.
At around half health, the Pilgrim Butterfly will have moved into positions on either side of the bridge, and alternate ranged support for their puppet. This can be incredibly difficult to see or predict given the intensity of the match and their distance from you, so remember to strafe constantly to see what the butterfly on both sides are doing. While it doesn’t happen often, they will alternate creating dozens of small projectiles (or one large one) that will pepper the arena where you are, which will require a good shield or a lot of dodging - lest they stun you long enough for the Dragonslayer Armour to capitalize on your moment of weakness. Another attack is a quick laser blast that will arc over a slice of the bridge, creating several marks that will soon explode. If you don’t see them you’re probably in the clear, but if you happen to notice a flash of light - get out of the way or risk getting caught. All in all, their projectiles usually shouldn't slow you down as long as you keep mobile and never stay in one area for too long - they exist more to trip you up than to deal any considerable amount of damage.
As long as you fight safely and carefully, waiting for the armor to open itself to retaliation - and of course beware of the ledges the armor creates as it breaks apart the bridge railings. Always keep out of the way of its shield - as attacking head on usually means wasting your stamina and getting stunned on its shield blocks.
When the Armor is defeated - so too will the Pilgrim Butterflies, falling from their positions before burning up as they float down to the gardens below. You’ll be rewarded with the Soul of Dragonslayer Armour, and unlock the bonfire on the bridge. The far gate will unlock, and the path to the Grand Archives leading to the top of Lothric Castle will be before you. If you haven't already, now would also be a great time to explore the Consumed King's Garden - located just up to the left of where you fought the Dancer.

Accessing Lothric Castle
After defeating Dancer of the Boreal Valley, ascend the ladder and proceed forward into the castle. In the first room will be a red eyed knight and a black clothed figure. The cleric in black will heal the knight during the fight so it would be useful to kill it first. Kill them and loot Soul of a Crestfallen Knight 1x from a corpse in front of the altar.
Take the staircase from the right side of the room up to find a cleric in black on your right and 2 Lothric knights and a cleric ahead. Proceed into the next room and light the Bonfire to the left.
Proceed straight into the next room and loot the chest on the right for the Prayer Set. On the left by the railing you will find a Titanite Chunk 1x. Head to the stairs along the left side to encounter some hollows. At the top of the stairs to your left will be another seated hollow in a tower. Ahead of this to the left is a set of stairs you can take down to a tower top where several hollows will climb over. Loot the corpse here for a Titanite Chunk 1x. Go back up to the main path and head into a room on the right where winged knight will drop down. Defeat it and loot the corpse here for Twinkling Titanite 1x. Climb the ladder, turn around, and go to the end of the platform to find an Illusory Wall on your left. Go through to find the Sacred Bloom Shield and the Winged Knight Set.
Return to the room with the Winged Knight, exit the room, and head up the stairs to face some crossbow hollows. Up to the left is a tower with another hollow where you can loot Titanite Chunk 1x. To the right you can loot a corpse for Soul of a Weary Warrior 1x and another Titanite Chunk 2x. Continue up the long staircase and then head left to light the Dragon Barracks Bonfire. Loot a corpse near for an Ember 1x. If you head up the wider stairs and then head left you will find a knight in front of a corpse with a Greatlance.
Navigating Wyvern Fire
Head toward the stone bridge near here where you'll see a Lothric Wyvern perched on the other side, but be aware that a second wyvern will land next to it, and both will begin spraying fire. Killing one wyvern will make them both die. If you decide to run across the bridge, you can drop down near the end to loot Undead Bone Shard 1x from a corpse underneath the bridge. Drop down again to the right to find a seated hollow. To the left is a doorway you can enter to find some stairs up but first, proceed down the path here to loot Titanite Chunk 2x. Keep going, and you will see a hollow that will turn into a black mass hollow; try to kill it before it can transform, and then continue on to find Twinkling Titanite 2x. Return to the doorway and head up the stairs and break some boxes to the left to find Lightning Urn 3x. Step through and exit the doorway and head right. On the stairs you will find a Crystal Lizard and a hollow will drop down here.
Continue up the stairs where more hollows will drop down. Continue up the path, where you will find a corpse to the right hanging over a ledge with Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier 1x. Continue up to the top of a tower and head down the stairs here to encounter a Winged Knight and a hollow to the left. You can loot a corpse near the hollow for Sniper Crossbow and Sniper Bolt 11x. Return to the tower top and take the other stairs down and take the path back towards the bonfire.
Make your way back to the stone bridge. Near the start of the bridge, you can drop down to the right to a lower ledge where you will find Titanite Chunk 1x. Continue along this ledge to come to a path and a staircase where 3 more hollows will attack. Continue up the stairs dispatching the hollows. At the top if you proceed straight you will encounter 2 Lothric Knights on the left. The one on the right is particularly deadly, he'll two-hand his sword and can bless it. You can aggro one at a time with ranged projectiles. If you head right instead up the short set of stairs you will come to a doorway on the right. Through here you will find a hollow to your right. Straight ahead will be Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier 1x on a corpse. To the far right of this room you will find a Raw Gem on a corpse.
Fight the Boreal Outrider Knight
Go down the stairs on the right to encounter a Boreal Outrider Knight on the lower level who deals some powerful frost damage. This is enemy is quick and relentless so patience and stamina conservation are key. Killing it has a chance to drop Irithyll Rapier. In this room are 4 chests, 1 with Twinkling Titanite 1x, 1 with Spirit Tree Crest Shield and 1 with Titanite Scale 1x. The 4th chest can be found hidden behind several boxes and contains Twinkling Titanite 2x.
Return up the stairs and head right up the large stairs. The wyverns will breathe fire into this courtyard area. You can dash left or it can be rolled through to head straight into the next room. Head up the stairs here avoiding the fire barrels being tossed and take out the hollows at the top. Head into the proceeding room where you will find hollows and a Mimic chest to the right with Titanite Scale 3x. A corpse in here can be looted for Pale Pine Resin 1x. If exit to the outside from this room you will find several hollows and a corpse with Titanite Scale 1x.
Reenter the room and head left down the stairs to take out more hollows and loot Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier 1x on a corpse hanging over the edge. If you take the ladder down you can loot a corpse in this room for Black Firebomb 3x, which will be useful for the next step. Head back up the ladder. To the right you will see a wyvern claw reaching into the room. Attacking it will trigger a dark eruption from which the Pus of Man infecting the wyvern will spill out spitting abyssal sludge that will build up curse. It is weak to fire and can be attacked at range to stay out of harm's way. Killing it will fell both wyverns in the area. At this point you can return to the area across the stone bridge where the wyverns had been guarding to loot corpses for Lightning Urn 6x, Refined Gem 1x, and Ember 2x.
Unlock main Gates for a Shortcut
Once the wyverns are slain, exit this room out the opposite doorway and head right down the stairs, down the path to find a corpse on the left with Titanite Chunk 1x and further down the path a Crystal Lizard & a body with Titanite Scale 1x. Return back to the room where you fought the wyvern claw and take the stairs down and head into the nearby room to find a Large Soul of a Weary Warrior 1x. Pull the lever here and drop down to the right to take on the cleric and red eyed Lothric Knight. Defeat them and head down the main central stairs to face another cleric and knight. A corpse in the corner has an Ember 1x.
Head back up the central staircase and take the curved stairs on your left. Head right to exit and right again to enter a church like building. There is an open doorway on the left. Take it and head right to find the Red Tearstone Ring. If you jump down where the rail is broken, you can find Caitha's Chime, beware the long fall. Inside the church you can find Rusted Coin 2x on a corpse and behind it, a chest with a Titanite Scale 1x. In the lower portion of this room, you can find the summon sign of Eygon of Carim. You can summon him now or wait until ready to tackle the boss if you want to explore some more.
Find the Sunlight Altar
Exit the church and slightly to the left and ahead will be a corpse with Sunlight Medal 1x. To the left of this corpse enter the room to activate a lift to unlock a shortcut to where you first entered the castle. Take the lift back up to the top and exit to the left and go left around the corner. On the left up the wall will be a ladder. Take it to the top and head left on the roof to find a corpse in the corner with Titanite Chunk 1x. If you make your way back along the roof you will come to a long rooftop leading towards some crossbow hollows and an axe wielding hollow. Cross into the building they are in and head to the opposite side of the room and take the ladder down. In this room you will find the Knight's Ring 1x.
Cross the covered bridge which leads out of this room to encounter an axe hollow and a greatsword wielding lothric knight. Beyond them in the next room is a chest with Titanite Scale 3x. In this room you will find the Altar of Sunlight, where you can learn the Praise the Sun Gesture and which also serves as the covenant turn in for the Warrior of Sunlight Covenant. Open the double door here and exit out.
If you head left and look over the edge you can see the dark mass which has erupted from the fallen wyvern. You can snipe it safely from up here with casting or a lot of arrows. The Onislayer Great arrow seems to do the most damage. It is susceptible to fire and can be taken out from range. If you have no ranged, run past the left side of it and get behind it. You will be inside the dead wyvern and it cannot attack this direction, just be careful attacking since most attacks cause your character to move forward, and getting you in range of it's flailing attacks. Killing it will cause the wyvern to disappear and you can loot Titanite Chunk 2x, Large Titanite Shard 2x, and Ember 2x. A corpse nearby can be looted for Soul of a Crestfallen Knight 1x. In the adjacent room you will find a Mimic with the Sunlight Straight Sword and up the stairs the Braille Divine Tome of Lothric.
Boss Fight: Dragonslayer Armour
Once ready to tackle the boss return to where you saw the sign for Eygon of Carim and summon him if you choose. Head out and to the right to come to the fog, where you will challenge the area boss, Dragonslayer Armour. Kill him to obtain Soul of Dragonslayer Armour. Proceed along this bridge and light the Bonfire, and continue on. Head to the right and take the stairs down to find Titanite Chunk 1x. Return up the stairs and head right up the main central stairs. In the next room you will find another Bonfire. Light it and press on into the Grand Archives.
