Getting your first Relic Weapon!
“Follow and read your quest log. Seriously.”
First of all, you must be level 50, have all class and job quests done for your job, and completed the story quest. The quest to start your Relic Weapon is “The Weaponsmith of Legend”, located in Vesper Bay (Northern Thanalan). You will end up going to Rowena (who you’re familiar with by now…) and eventually Gerolt (who you’ll come to hate, haha). He will ask you to complete step 1: Broken Weapon. Which is just a fetch quest. On to the next step!
Step 2: Pre-relic weapon / materia table
Class | Pre-relic | Materia | Melded & Crafted by |
---|---|---|---|
PLD | Aeolian Scimitar | 2x Battledance III | BSM (Blacksmith) |
WAR | Barbarians Bardiche | 2x Battledance III | BSM (Blacksmith) |
WHM | Madmans Whispering Rod | 2x Quicktongue III | CRP (Carpenter) |
SCH | Erudites Picatrix of Healing | 2x Quicktongue III | ALC (Alchemist) |
BLM | Sanguine Scepter | 2x Savage Might III | GSM (Goldsmith) |
SMN | Erudites Picatrix of Casting | 2x Savage Might III | ALC (Alchemist) |
MNK | Wildlings Cesti | 2x Savage Aim III | GSM (Goldsmith) |
NIN | Vampers Knives | 2x Heavens Eye III | ALC (Alchemist) |
DRG | Champions Lance | 2x Savage Aim III | CRP (Carpenter) |
BRD | Longarms Composite Bow | 2x Heavens Eye III | CRP (Carpenter) |
Step 3: Alumina Salts: is basically defeating Dhorme Chimera. This can be unlocked via Coerthas Central Highlands (X-32, Y-6) (Upper right cave). If you’re reading this in 2015 or more – this guys a chump. WITH YOUR “RELIC” EQUIPPED
Step 4: running Amdapor Keep for an Amdapor Glyph. WITH YOUR “RELIC” EQUIPPED.
Step 5: killing 24 beastmen. Keep following the quest log… WITH YOUR “RELIC” EQUIPPED
Step 6: defeat Hydra. This can be unlocked via Eastern Thanalan (x14,y30) (Next to Halatali entrance). WITH YOUR “RELIC” EQUIPPED.
Step 7: Kill the Hardmode Primals (Ifrit -> Garuda -> Titan). Running these on Duty Finder (even if you’re a brand new player), will probably clear no matter what. The exception to this is Titan HM, which you might want to learn a bit. There was a time that “Obtain Hyperfused ore” was stuck in peoples quest logs for quite some time… Again, WITH YOUR “RELIC” EQUIPPED.
Step 8: Buying Radz-at-han Quenching Oil, costs some lesser tomestones, and voila you have a relic! (This is not the end, please look forward to it. TM). You should have your first Relic!
Upgrading your Base Relic to Zenith
This is by far the simplest step. Obtain 3x Thavnarian mist which are purchased using lesser tomestones.
Good luck getting your very first relic! I assume you’re going to be checking the Zenith step next. Any tips or info to share? feel free to comment below!

Atma Grind
Assuming you have a Zenith weapon you should go to Gerolt in North Shroud (X:30, Y:20) and pick up the quest "Up in Arms". He will give you a tedious quest that involves collecting 12 atma stones from around the world. I say tedious because to obtain one of them you have to run around participating in low level FATEs and hope an atma drops at the end of it. The drop rate for an atma is somewhere around 2% and you need 12 of them, so expect to complete at least 600 FATEs.
You will need one of each atma and any FATE in the zone can drop it. You will need your Zenith weapon equipped in order for it to drop and you will need to ensure you have inventory space for when they drop otherwise you will lose it. You do not need a gold rating on the FATE in order for it to drop but no one knows whether bronze and silver give an even lower drop rate so we advise you not to risk it.
The 12 atma stones and locations that you need are listed in the table below.
Atma | Location |
Maiden | Central Shroud |
Goat | East Shroud |
Archer | North Shroud |
Scales | Central Thanalan |
Bull | Eastern Thanalan |
Scorpion | Southern Thanalan |
Twins | Western Thanalan |
Fish | Lower La Noscea |
Ram | Middle La Noscea |
Lion | Outer La Noscea |
Water-Bearer | Upper La Noscea |
Crab | Western La Noscea |
Once you have collected all 12 of your atmas you should take them to Jalzahn in North Shroud, who is located near Gerolt. This will give you your atma weapon that has the same stats as your Zenith.
Books
If you thought collecting the atmas was time consuming just wait until you get to the next bit. Fortunately there is no random element in it but it is still a big grind. You will need to complete 9 books before you can fully upgrade your weapon to the stats that an i100 weapon should have. These books will cost 1500 Mythology Tomestones each so that is 13500 you will need in all, which will take 270 runs in the new dungeons to obtain.

As you can see, the books contain four categories of content that you need to complete. Completing the books is actually fun, unlike the grind to obtain the Tomestones required to purchase them. The categories are described below:
Enemies:As shown in the screenshot above you will have to defeat 10 types of monsters 10 times. These tend to be level 50 monsters in far off corners of the world.
Dungeons:You will be given three dungeons to complete out of all of the ones that are in the game.
FATEs:You will be given three FATEs to complete and you must obtain a gold rating on all of them. This bit can be annoying because some FATEs can take hours to respawn.
Leves:Three guildleves will be listed that you need to complete. These may be battle leves or they could be grand company leves. If you can't find the leve listed at the NPC in the area it is because it only displays 2 or 3 at a time and to show others you must first complete one from what is available.
Once you complete all 9 books the weapon will be converted from an Atma weapon to an Animus weapon, which has the expected damage rating of an ilevel 100 weapon. More chapters are to come in future patches.
Novus Upgrade
This was added in patch 2.28 and is a continuation from the Animus weapon. This brings the weapon to i110. This quest mostly involves farming Alexandrite from a number of sources and using it to attach materia to a sphere scroll. This can get very expensive if you use tier 4 materia. To obtain your sphere scroll you must first purchase 3 Superior Enchanted Inks from Auriana in Mor Dhona for 250 Soldiery each.
Alexandrite can be obtained by completing the quest Morbid Motivation from Brangwine in Mor Dhona and completing the Mysterious Map that comes as a reward. Mysterious Maps can also be purchased from Auriana for 400 Soldiery. Another way of obtaining Alexandrite is by doing F.A.T.E.s
You will need 75 alexandrites in total in order to upgrade your weapon, and each one requires materia. Materia can be added to stats such as Accuracy, Determination, Critical Hit Rate, Spell Speed and more and you must use the materia that corresponds to the stat. To begin with you start with tier 1 materia until you reach its cap, then tier 2, 3 and 4. Using tier 4s is where it gets very expensive.
It is possible to alter your stats in the same way once you have completed this step, and you will only need as many alexandrite and materia as the number of stats you would like to change.
Nexus Upgrade
This was added in patch 2.38 and is a continuation from the Novus weapon. This brings the weapon to i115. This stage of the relic is quite simple in execution, however it can be very time consuming.
Your task is to Soulglaze the weapon with light. This means completing trials, dungeons, F.A.T.E.s, maps, PVP and treasure hunt in order to gain points. Each activity is assigned its own value and there is also a bonus that seems to be random - meaning an activity can give more than its usual points when under bonus. Your goal is to collect 2000 lights and to know how close you are to completion you can examine your Soulglass and compare to the info below:
No Activity: 0-199
Indistinct Activity: 200-399
Faint Activity: 400-599
Slight Activity: 600-799
Modest Activity: 800-999
Distinct Activity: 1000-1199
Robust Activity: 1200-1399
Vigorous Activity: 1400-1599
Intense Activity: 1600-1799
Extreme Activity: 1800-1999
Bursting Activity: 2000+
The number of points an activity is worth is determined based on the message you receive upon completion of the activity. You will see a message with one of the following keywords in it:
Feeble: 2
Gentle: 4
Bright: 8
Brilliant: 12
Blinding: 24
Newborn Star: 32
Once you reach 2000 you can upgrade your relic to Nexus.
Zodiac Upgrade
This was added in patch 2.45 and is a continuation from the Novus weapon. The weapons have changed name and appearance and they are now ilevel 125.
This is a long questline - there are a number of different things that you must obtain. To begin with there are four main quests called "Labor of Love", "Method in His Malice", "A Ponze of Flesh", "A Treasured Mother" that form the relic upgrade and you must complete all of them to finish the relic upgrade. Each quest is described below:
Labor of Love
This quest is given by Guiding Star in Mor Dhona at 21,6 and you will have to perform a number of tasks for him:
Buy an Allagan Resin from the Merchant & Mender in Southern Thanalan at 15,29 for 100,000 gil.
Obtain a Vale Bubo from Aurum Vale.
Obtain a piece of Voidweave from Haukke Manor Hard Mode.
Obtain a slip of Amdapor Vellum from the The Lost City of Amdapor.
Obtain an Indigo Pearl from Sastasha Hard Mode.
Obtain an HQ Perfect Mortar and HQ Perfect Pestle - These can either be crafted from items desynthed from items sold at the Silver Bazaar or bought on the market boards.
Buy a Bombard Core from your Grand Company for 20,000 seals.
Buy a Sacred Spring Water for 1600 Soldiery from Auriana in Mor Dhona.
Method in His Malice
This quest is given by Adkin in Central Thanalan at 23,13 and you will have to perform a number of tasks for him:
Obtain a vial of Tonberry King Blood from the The Wanderer's Palace.
Obtain a vial of Royal Gigant Blood from the Copperbell Mines Hard Mode.
Obtain a vial of Kraken Blood from Hullbreaker Isle.
Obtain a vial of Vicegerent Blood from The Sunken Temple of Qarn Hard Mode.
Obtain an HQ Perfect Vellum and HQ Perfect Pounce - These can either be crafted from items desynthed from items sold at the Silver Bazaar or bought on the market boards.
Buy a Bombard Core from your Grand Company for 20,000 seals.
Buy a Sacred Spring Water for 1600 Soldiery from Auriana in Mor Dhona.
Buy a Flurite Sand from the Merchant & Mender in Coerthas Central Highlands at 13,16 for 100,000 gil.
A Ponze of Flesh
This quest is given by Papana in Mor Dhona at 22,7 and you will have to perform a number of tasks for him:
Buy a Bombard Core from your Grand Company for 20,000 seals.
Buy a Sacred Spring Water for 1600 Soldiery from Auriana in Mor Dhona.
Buy a Bronze Lake Crystal from the Junkmonger in Upper La Noscea at 26,26 for 100,000 gil.
Obtain a Horn of the beast from Dzemael Darkhold.
Obtain a Gobmachine Bangplate from Brayflox's Longstop Hard Mode.
Obtain a Narashima Hide from Halatali Hard Mode.
Obtain a Sickle Fang from Snowcloak.
Obtain an HQ Furnace Ring and an HQ Perfect Firewood - These can either be crafted from items desynthed from items sold at the Silver Bazaar or bought on the market boards.
A Treasured Mother.
This quest is given by Brangwine in Mor Dhona at 22,6 and you will have to perform a number of tasks for him:
Buy a Bombard Core from your Grand Company for 20,000 seals.
Buy a Brass Kettle from the Tool Supplier and Mender in North Shroud at 29,19 for 100,000 gil.
Buy a Sacred Spring Water for 1600 Soldiery from Auriana in Mor Dhona.
Obtain lost treasure from Amdapor Keep.
Obtain lost treasure from Pharos Sirius.
Obtain lost treasure from Tam-Tara Deepcroft Hard Mode.
Obtain lost treasure from the Stone Vigil Hard Mode.
Obtain a Tailor-made Eel Pie and an HQ Perfect Cloth - These can either be crafted from items desynthed from items sold at the Silver Bazaar or bought on the market boards.
Once you have completed all four quests you can go to Jalzahn and finish the upgrade.
Zeta Upgrade
The final stage of the Zodiac weapon quest was implemented in patch 2.51 and upgrades your weapon to ilevel 135. These weapons are called Zetas.
Surprisingly this is one of the fastest stages of the weapon to complete and it is similar to the Nexus stage where you had to collect lights.
The quest leads to an NPC whereby you have to purchase 12 Mahatma for 200 Soldiery each - one at a time. To complete a mahatma you must gain light, just like the Nexus upgrade. However the difference this time is that the point values for your light are much higher.
Your goal is to collect 2000 lights and to know how close you are to completion you can examine your Zodiac Glass and compare to the info below:
No Sense: 0-199
Indistinct Sense: 200-399
Faint Sense: 400-599
Slight Sense: 600-799
Modest Sense: 800-999
Distinct Sense: 1000-1199
Robust Sense: 1200-1399
Vigorous Sense: 1400-1599
Intense Sense: 1600-1799
Extreme Sense: 1800-1999
Bursting Sense: 2000+
The number of points an activity is worth is determined based on the message you receive upon completion of the activity. You will see a message with one of the following keywords in it:
Feeble: 50
Faint: 100
Gentle: 200
Steady: 400
Forceful: 600
Nigh Sings: 800
After reaching 2000 points on a Mahatma you can then obtain the next one. Once all are complete you can upgrade your weapon.
Soldiery Grind
Currently the fastest way to get Soldiery is to carry new players through content and take the 100 soldiery bonus that comes with it. Create a party of 7 players and use the duty finder on fights such as primal extremes, Binding Coil turn 5 and Second Coil turn 1-3. Most of the time the 8th player who joins through the DF will be a new player, because people who have cleared these fights generally don't see it as worth their time to run them via DF.
Alternative ways of getting Soldiery include repeat runs of Brayflox's Longstop, Hunts and daily roulettes. You could also run lots of dungeons but it is better to keep to the fast methods.
The Weapons
Below are a list of all the Zodiac weapons that are available.
Final Fantasy 14: Complete Guide To Zodiac Weapons

Obtaining your Zodiac Weapon in Final Fantasy XIV is a long and arduous task but is well worth it for bragging rights. Here's what you need to do.
Quick Links
Final Fantasy 14has thousands of hours of content, and you can spend days working on a single goal. As you complete A Realm Reborn, you have the option of crafting a Zodiac Relic Weapon. This weapon will take an absurd amount of time to complete, but it will be worth every second by the end. In this guide, we'll go over everything you'll need to know for completing your Zodiac Weapon.
Related: Final Fantasy 14: Complete Guide To Anima Weapons
Crafting a Zodiac weapon is a long process that will require dozens of hours of work, tons of materials, Gil, and other currencies. Although this weapon was once the best you could have, level 50 weapons are now severely outdated, and shouldn't be used past level 55 or so. Still, you will probably want to make a Zodiac weapon anyway, because of the prestige and status that comes with owning one of the game's rarest items.
The Weaponsmith of Legend
Pre-requisites:
- Complete the Main Scenario Quest The Ultimate Weapon
- Complete all class and jobs quests for your chosen job
NPC Location:
- Nedrick - Vesper Bay, Western Thanalan (X:12, Y:14.3)
This is the first quest in the Zodiac Weapon questline, and will only need to be done once. Accept this quest from Nedrick in Vesper Bay, then travel to Revenant's Toll in Mor Dhona. There, speak with Rowena, who will send you to speak with Gerolt in Hyrstmill, North Shroud.
Gerolt will be one of the main NPCs of this questline who you will repeatedly come back to speak with.
Tip: Use the Fallgourd Float Aetherite and fly to Hyrstmill to quickly get back there.
A Relic Reborn
NPC Location:
- Gerolt - Hyrstmill, North Shroud (X:30.2, Y:20.2)
To begin this quest, speak with Gerolt in Hyrstmill. He will ask you to recover a broken weapon from a Beast Tribe stronghold. Where you find this weapon depends on your job.
Job | Location |
---|---|
Bard | Natalan, Coerthas Central Highlands |
Black Mage | U'Ghamaro Mines, Outer La Noscea |
Dragoon | Natalan, Coerthas Central Highlands |
Monk | Zahar'ak, Southern Thanalan |
Ninja | Sapsa Spawning Grounds, Western La Noscea |
Paladin | Zahar'ak, Southern Thanalan |
Scholar | Sapsa Spawning Grounds, Western La Noscea |
Summoner | Sylphlands, East Shroud |
Warrior | U'Ghamaro Mines, Outer La Noscea |
White Mage | U'Ghamaro Mines, Outer La Noscea |
After you retrieve the broken weapon, you will need to use a different weapon as a sort of template for your Relic. Then, you will have to meld various types of materia onto that weapon, depending on your job. You can buy these weapons from the Market Board, have a crafter make them for you, or craft them yourself.
Next, you will need to meld the materia onto your weapon. You can do this yourself if you have the appropriate crafter leveled up, or you can ask someone else to do it for you. Alternatively, you can speak with a Materia Melder NPC to have them meld the materia onto the weapon for you.
Each Job's weapon and materia needed are listed below.
Job | Weapon | Materia |
---|---|---|
Bard | Longarm's Composite Bow | Heavens' Eye Materia III |
Black Mage | Sanguine Scepter | Savage Might Materia III |
Dragoon | Champion's Lance | Savage Aim Materia III |
Monk | Wildling's Cesti | Savage Aim Materia III |
Ninja | Vamper's Knives | Heavens' Eye Materia III |
Paladin | Aeolian Scimitar | Battledance Materia III |
Scholar | Erudite's Picatrix of Healing | Quicktongue Materia III |
Summoner | Erudite's Picatrix of Casting | Savage Might Materia III |
Warrior | Barbarian's Bardiche | Battledance Materia III |
White Mage | Madman's Whispering Rod | Quicktongue Materia III |
Completing this step will reward you with your base Relic Weapon, which you will need to equip for the remainder of this step.
Next, you will have to fight the Chimera in the 8-man trial A Relic Reborn: The Chimera. You will unlock this trial permanently after reaching this section of the quest.
Defeat the Chimera, then speak with Gerolt, who will send you back to Rowena in Mor Dhona. Eventually, you will be asked to complete the level 50 dungeon Amdapor Keep as your chosen job. Then, return to Gerolt to begin the next step.
Finally, you will have your Relic Weapon. However, there is still more work to do to complete this step. Next, equip your new weapon and defeat a total of 24 enemies of the following types, depending on your job.
Job | Location | Enemy 1 | Enemy 2 | Enemy 3 |
---|---|---|---|---|
Bard | Natalan, Coerthas Central Highlands | Natalan Boldwing | Natalan Fogcaller | Natalan Windtalon |
Black Mage | U'Ghamaro Mines, Outer La Noscea | 13th Order Quarryman | 13th Order Bedesman | 13th Order Priest |
Dragoon | Natalan, Coerthas Central Highlands | Natalan Boldwing | Natalan Fogcaller | Natalan Windtalon |
Monk | Zahar'ak, Southern Thanalan | Zahar'ak Lancer | Zahar'ak Pugilist | Zahar'ak Archer |
Ninja | Sapsa Spawning Grounds, Western La Noscea | Sapsa Shelfspine | Sapsa Shelfclaw | Sapsa Shelftooth |
Paladin | Zahar'ak, Southern Thanalan | Zahar'ak Lancer | Zahar'ak Pugilist | Zahar'ak Archer |
Scholar | Sapsa Spawning Grounds, Western La Noscea | Sapsa Shelfspine | Sapsa Shelfclaw | Sapsa Shelftooth |
Summoner | Sylphlands, East Shroud | Violet Sigh | Violet Screech | Violet Snarl |
Warrior | U'Ghamaro Mines, Outer La Noscea | 13th Order Quarryman | 13th Order Bedesman | 13th Order Priest |
White Mage | U'Ghamaro Mines, Outer La Noscea | 13th Order Quarryman | 13th Order Bedesman | 13th Order Priest |
Next, you will have to complete the following duties and retrieve the requested item. They must be completed in this order.
- A Relic Reborn: The Hydra
- The Bowl of Embers (Hard)
- The Howling Eye (Hard)
- The Navel (Hard)
Then, deliver one Radz-at-Han Quenching Oil to Gerolt. You can buy this item for 15 Tomestones of Poetics from Auriana in Mor Dhona.
Finally, the first step of the Zodiac Weapon quest is complete.
Reward:
Zenith Upgrade
This step is unique because there is no quest associated with it. To complete this step, simply gather three Thavnairian Mist and take them to the furnace in Hyrstmill. These items can be purchased for 20 Poetic Tomestones each, for a total of 60 Poetics. At the furnace, unequip your Relic Weapon if it's equipped, then put both the weapon and Thavnairian Mist into the furnace to upgrade your Relic to its Zenith version.
Reward:
Up in Arms
NPC Location:
- Jalzahn - Hyrstmill, North Shroud (X:29.5, Y:19.6)
For this quest, Jalzahn will ask you to gather materials known as Atma. You will need a total of 12 Atma, and they can be acquired from FATEs in the zones listed below.
Note: You won't obtain Atma if your Relic Weapon is not equipped, so be sure you're using it to complete these FATEs.
Up in Arms is a quest you will only have to complete once per character, after which you will just have to retrieve the Atma and bring them to Jalzahn.
Location | Atma |
---|---|
North Shroud | Atma of the Archer |
Eastern Thanalan | Atma of the Bull |
Western La Noscea | Atma of the Crab |
Lower La Noscea | Atma of the Fish |
East Shroud | Atma of the Goat |
Outer La Noscea | Atma of the Lion |
Central Shroud | Atma of the Maiden |
Middle La Noscea | Atma of the Ram |
Central Thanalan | Atma of the Scales |
Southern Thanalan | Atma of the Scorpion |
Western Thanalan | Atma of the Twins |
Upper La Noscea | Atma of the Water-bearer |
After you have all 12 Atma, bring them to Jalzahn and he will upgrade your weapon.
Reward:
Trials of the Braves
NPC Location:
- Jalzahn - Hyrstmill, North Shroud (X:29.5, Y:19.6)
This step is where the Zodiac Weapon quest really starts to get grindy. First, pick up this quest from Jalzahn, who will send you to Mor Dhona. Eventually, you will meet G'jusana, who will be an important NPC for the remainder of this step.
From G'jusana, you will need to purchase Books for 100 Tomestones of Poetics. Each Book will list various tasks that you need to complete. In total, there are nine Books, each with 19 tasks to complete. The tasks vary by Book, but the type of activity you do will remain the same for each Book. You will need to have your Relic Weapon equipped when completing each objective. Each Book will ask you to do the following.
- Complete three Dungeons
- Defeat 10 different enemies, three times each
- Complete three FATEs
- Complete three Levequests
You can only have one Book at a time, and it must be completed and turned in to G'jusana before you can buy another one. If you do buy another Book before finishing the one you're currently working on, your current progress will be lost. Remember to finish your Books before accepting new ones!
Reward:
- Animus Weapon (iLvl. 100)
Celestial Radiance
- NPC Location: Jalzahn - Hyrstmill, North Shroud (X:29.5, Y:19.6)
Celestial Radiance is mainly a story quest, and will only have to be completed once. Follow the NPCs as they tell you where to go. Eventually, you will need to purchase three Superior Enchanted Ink from Auriana in Mor Dhona. These cost 25 Poetics each, for a total of 75 Poetics. After turning in the Ink, you will receive a Sphere Scroll, which you will need for the next step.
Star Light, Star Bright
NPC Location:
- Jalzahn - Hyrstmill, North Shroud (X:29.5, Y:19.6)
This step will involve you melding materia onto your weapon to add to its total stat points. You will need roughly 75 materia, and 75 of an item called Alexandrite, which is used to infuse the materia so it can be slotted into your weapon.
Materia
There are four tiers you will need to progress through when melding materia onto your weapon. At first, you will need to use low-level materia, then progressively start using higher materia. You can use a maximum of 11 materia of one grade and type per tier. For example, you can use 11 Quickarm Materia I on the first tier, but for the second tier you will have to upgrade to Quickarm Materia II, and so on.
In total, you can use a maximum of 44 materia of a single type, and 31 materia of a second type. Keep in mind that you don't have to use the same type of materia across the board, especially since you probably won't be using this weapon for its stats anyway. We recommend buying whatever materia is the cheapest from the Market Board.
However, as you meld materia into your weapon, there is a chance that it will fail to meld. The success rate is listed below.
Materia | Success Rate |
---|---|
First | 100% |
Second | 100% |
Third | 100% |
Fourth | 100% |
Fifth | 100% |
Sixth | 100% |
Seventh | 96% |
Eighth | 90% |
Ninth | 82% |
Tenth | 72% |
Eleventh | 60% |
Be sure to buy a few extra materia in case you get bad luck when melding.
Alexandrite
Alexandrite is a special material that you can gain in the following ways. You will need a total of 75 to complete this step.
- Complete FATEs with your Relic Weapon equipped
- Purchase for 50 Allied Seals from Hunt Billmaster in your Grand Company's Headquarters
- Treasure from Mysterious Maps, which can be obtained from:
- 'Morbid Motivation' daily quest — complete Duty Roulette: Level 50/60/70 Dungeon (you can get this quest from Brangwine in Mor Dhona)
- Purchase for 75 Tomestones of Poetics from Auriana in Mor Dhona
Mysterious Maps will require you to decipher them, then find the location pictured on the map. After going to that location, a chest and group of enemies will spawn. After defeating the enemies, you can open the chest and receive five Alexandrite.
Alexandrite is used to combine with materia as you meld it to your weapon. If the materia melding fails, you won't lose your Alexandrite, so you're safe to gather exactly 75.
Reward:
Mmmmmm, Soulglazed Relics
NPC Location:
- Jalzahn - Hyrstmill, North Shroud (X:29.5, Y:19.6)
To start this step, first complete the one-time quest Mmmmmm, Souldglazed Relics. After finishing this quest, you will be able to Soulglaze your relic by speaking with Jalzahn. Soulglazing doesn't actually do anything on its own, but it will enable you to gather something called 'light'. Light is essentially a point counter that will increase as you complete duties.
After completing a duty, you will receive a small notification of how much light your relic has received. Each value is listed below.
Light Level | Point Value |
---|---|
Feeble | 8 Points |
Gentle | 16 Points |
Bright | 32 Points |
Brilliant | 48 Points |
Blinding | 96 Points |
Newborn Star | 128 Points |
In general, duties with higher-level requirements will grant more light. For example, the dungeon Sastasha will only grant a few light points, but Crystal Tower raids will grant a lot.
When your weapon reaches certain values of light, it will tell you its activity level, which you can see below. You will need a total of 2,000 light points to finish this step.
Light Indicator | Point Value |
---|---|
No activity | 0-199 |
Indistinct Activity | 200-399 |
Faint Activity | 400-599 |
Slight Activity | 600-799 |
Modest Activity | 800-999 |

This is the final quest in the Zodiac Weapon questline and will reward you with a Zodiac Zeta weapon upon completion.
This step is similar to the step in which you gathered light points from before. However, this time you will need to infuse 12 different Mahatma with light. Each Mahatma will need 40 total light points, and they are named as follows.
- Mahatma of the Ram
- Mahatma of the Bull
- Mahatma of the Twins
- Mahatma of the Crab
- Mahatma of the Lion
- Mahatma of the Maiden
- Mahatma of the Scales
- Mahatma of the Scorpion
- Mahatma of the Archer
- Mahatma of the Goat
- Mahatma of the Water-bearer
- Mahatma of the Fish
You will need to purchase each Mahatma from Remon for 50 Poetics, or 600 Poetics in total for all 12 Mahatma. They must be completed in the order listed above.
Light points can be gained in the same way as before. The best way of quickly completing this quest is to run Tam-Tara Deepcroft twice for each Mahatma. One clear of this dungeon will grant 24 light points, which means you will only need to do two clears to finish a Mahatma. As long as you run Tam-Tara unsynced in an undersized party, you should have no problems clearing it quickly.
If doing Tam-Tara Deepcroft 24 times in a row doesn't sound fun, you can also do any of the duties listed in the previous light step, including FATEs, trials, and raids.
After you have finished infusing all 12 Mahatma, speak with Jalzahn and select Zodiac Weapon Awakening. Watch the short cutscene, and your Zodiac weapon will be complete!
Reward:
- Zodiac Zeta Weapon (iLvl. 135)

Come, take up your Last Resort─born of stars' radiance, forged through heroes' might, and imbued with souls' blessing!
Jalzahn, upon receiving the Last Resort
The Zodiac Weapons(ゾディアックウェポン, Zodiakku Wepon?) are legendary weapons in Final Fantasy XIV. Said have been wielded by the Zodiac Braves in ages past, they can be reconstructed as an upgrade beyond the Nexus stage of Relic Weapons. They were added in Patch 2.45. They can further be upgraded to Zodiac Weapon Zeta as of Patch 2.51, but compared to earlier stages, the upgrade process is far less time-consuming. Zeta weapons can be used to quicken the first step of obtaining Anima Weapons.
Story[]
With the Relic Weapon seemingly at maximum capacity at the Nexus phase, Gerolt concludes the only solution is to create a new, stronger vessel in the image of the arms of the Zodiac Braves. Such an extraordinary task requires extraordinary materials: zodium to forge the vessel, a copy of the Book of Skylight to recreate the designs, a zodiac sphere scroll to hold the aetherial essence, and a flawless alexandrite to transfer the old Relic's accumulated soul energy.
Obtaining the Zodiac[]
The four materials required are obtained through four lengthy, concurrent sidequests. These quests require a number of materials purchased as well as obtaining items for completing high-level dungeons.

Zodiac Weapons[]
Note that the Zodiac Weapons inherit the secondary attributes from the Relic Weapon, and may still be altered with Sphere Scrolls.
Excalibur and Aegis Shield[]
Ages past, a wise and just king reigned over all Ilsabard. A blade such as this graced his scabbard in times of peace, and brought terror to his foes in times of strife! And his shield? A twin to the one you hold, unwavering, unyielding, unbreaking.

How to Forge a Zodiac Weapon in Final Fantasy XIV
The powerful legendary Zodiac weapons can serve as the ultimate weapons throughout A Realm Reborn and Heavensward.
Final Fantasy XIV is about to receive yet another free update come August. While most will be clamoring for brand new content in Shadowbringers, others will be thrilled to know that the Heavensward expansion will also become completely free. This will give players a taste of all of the base game and first expansion combat jobs up to level 60. Players hooked by that initial taste can go on to experience large scale raids based on Final Fantasy Tactics and Nier Automata.

Relics are the ultimate weapon in A Realm Reborn, strong enough to also serve as arms during much of Heavensward. They are exclusive to jobs introduced before patch 3.0, so you can’t get one if you are playing as later jobs like a Samurai or Dancer. Still, the time and currency investment are worthwhile, as both a Relic and its much later upgrades can be used far beyond level 60.
Creating a Zodiac Relic in Final Fantasy XIV
To start your journey, accept the level 50 quest The Weapon Smith of Legend from Nedrick Ironheart in Western Thanalan X:12, Y:14. This will lead to the quest A Relic Reborn for your current combat job. Based on this choice, the smith Gerolt will send you to a certain beastman stronghold to recover a lost weapon: Natalan, Zahar’ak, Sylphlands, Sapsa Spawning Grounds, or U’Ghamaro Mines. You will also need to craft or purchase a corresponding new weapon along with attaching two third grade materia. Check your market board or ask your free company if you are unable to make it yourself.
You will next need to clear some instanced content as your job and equipped with your base weapon: The Chimera trial and the Amdapor Keep dungeon. Return to Gerolt and he will send you back to the stronghold to kill 24 specific monsters with your weapon. Next, you will need to complete four more trials: The Hydra, Bowl of Embers (Hard), Howling Eye (Hard), and The Navel (Hard). As long as you are using Duty Finder, you will likely be match-made with over-equipped players that can easily clear this content.
Last, purchase a Radz-at-Han Quenching Oil from Auriana in Mor Dhona for 15 Poetic Tomestones (easily gained from the previous trials). With all of the items and quests cleared, head back to Gerlot in North Shroud and he will forge your item level 80 Zodiac Relic.
Upgrading Beyond Relic in Final Fantasy XIV
Your Zodiac Relic may seem nice, but it pales in comparison to what it can become via more questing. First, purchase three Thavnairian Mists from Auriana for 60 Poetics. Take these to the Furnace in North Shroud to transform your weapon into an item level 90 Zenith Relic. Next, speak to Gerolt to start Up in Arms. With your Zenith in hand, you will need to collect 12 Atmas from FATES across Eorzea in Thanalan, La Noscea, and The Black Shroud. These drops are purely random, so keep grinding until obtaining all of them. You can even horde spares for a second future Relic. Take all of the collected Atmas to Jalzahn near Gerolt and he will upgrade your weapon into an Atma Zodiac weapon. This has an item level of 100 but actually isn’t any more powerful than the Zenith.
Animus
Jalzahn will have a new upgrade quest, Trials of the Braves that will send you to G’jusana in Mor Dhona. From here, you will need to purchase 9 different training books each for 100 Poetics, for a total of 900. Each book will either boost a primary attack stat (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Mind), Vitality, or a secondary stat like Direct Hit or Determination. Each individual manual will require killing 30 specific monsters, clearing 3 dungeons, 3 FATES, and 3 Guildleves. That is a total of 270 monsters, 27 dungeons, 27 FATES, and 27 Guildleves. Note that because FATES are on a timed schedule, you may need to wait around for them to appear. Once all 9 books are cleared, return to Jalzahn and he will upgrade your Atma into an Animus weapon with the full upgrades.
Novus and Nexus
Jalzahn will have more tasks for you, first Celestial Radiance. Make a pit stop to Auriana and buy 3 Superior Enchanted Ink for 75 Poetics total. Take these to Hubairtin at Central Thanalan X:23, Y:13 for a Sphere Scroll. Bring the scroll to Jalzahn and he will instruct you to bind 75 materia to it using Alexandrite. These drop from FATES when wielding an Animus, or can be bought directly from a Hunt Billmaster for 50 Allied Seals each. Alternately, they are a reward from Mysterious Maps. Auriana will sell each map for 75 Poetics or you can complete the daily quest Morbid Motivation from Brangwine in Mor Dhona X:21, Y:6 who will give one map per each Duty Roulette: High Level clear. Monsters that spawn from Mysterious Maps should be soloable at level 50, but just in case use a Chocobo companion or bring allies.
Once you have the Alexandrite, you can fuse any secondary stat materia of your choosing to customize your Zodiac. First-grade materia will bind successfully, but as you move up to second, third, and fourth grade the probability of success falls. Failure will destroy the materia, but preserve the Alexandrite. To make the process go faster, it may be wise to balance out Direct Hit, Critical Hit, Determination, Skill/Spell Speed, and Piety/Tenacity evenly depending on the job. Once all 75 are allocated, give the weapon to Jalzahn and he will transform it into an item level 110 Novus weapon.
Jalzahn’s next quest is Mmmmmm, Soulglazed Relics. You will need to gather up 2000 Light Activity by completing various A Realm Reborn content with your Novus (note that Heavensward and beyond content will not count). Feeble will give 8 points, Gentle 16, Bright 32, Brilliant 48, Blinding 96, and Newborn Star 128. Basic FATES and Feast matches are Feeble, while most dungeons are Brilliant, and 24-man raids Blinding. However, any content can have a temporary light bonus to the next tier. The fastest grind will be to complete Extreme Primals or Coils of Bahamut during their Brilliant window. With all light acquired, Jalzahn will make it an item level 115 Nexus weapon.
Zodiac Brave and Zeta
Finding your weapon lackluster, Jalzahn will suggest completely reforging it via four new quests: A Ponze of Flesh from Papana in Mor Dhona X:23, Y:7, Labor of Love from Guilding Star at X:21, Y:6, a Treasured Mother from Brangwine, and separately Method in his Malice from Adkin in Central Thanalan X:23, Y:13. Each of these four will ask for various items in different order sets. In total you will need to acquire or complete the following:
- 4 Bombard Cores from your Grand Company for 80,000 Company Seals
- 4 Sacred Spring Waters from Auriana for 800 Poetics
- Bronze Lake Crystal, Allagan Resin, Furtite Sand, and Brass Kettle for 400,000 gil sold around Upper La Noscea, Souther Thanalan, Coerthas Central Highlands, and North Shroud, respectively
- High Quality crafted items from all 9 Disciples of Hand (crafted yourself or bought from other players)
- Farming the following 16 dungeons for random drops: Aurum Vale, Dzemeal Darkhold, Bryflox’s Longstop (Hard), Halatali (Hard), Haukke Manor (Hard), Sastasha (Hard), Copperbell Mines (Hard), The Suken Temple of Qarn (Hard), Stone Vigil (Hard), Tam-Tara Deepcroft (Hard), The Wanderer’s Palace, Amdapor Keep, The Lost City of Amdapor, Pharos Sirius, Hullbreaker Isle, and Snowcloak
With all four quests done, Jalzahn and Gerolt will rebuild your Nexus as an item level 125 Zodiac Brave. But for an even stronger weapon Jalzahn has one last quest: Rise and Shine. This will send you off to Remon in Swiftperch Western La Noscea X:34, Y:31. He will sell you 12 different Mahatma for 600 Poetics total and have you gather up more Light Activity.
Gathering works slightly different than a Nexus, each Mahatma only needs 40 points, and all excess is wasted. Once a Mahatma is completed you will need to buy a new one from Remon. Also, the points rewarded are slightly different: Feeble is 4, Faint is 8, Gentle is 16, Steady is 24, Forceful is 48, and Nigh Sings is 64. 24-man raids like World of Darkness will always max out the needed light points. After confirming with Remon that all 12 Mahatma are powered, return to Gerolt for your ultimate item level 135 Zodiac Zeta weapon.
Your completed Zeta will serve you well up through most of Heavensward. Best yet, it can give you a head start on creating item level 275 Lux weapons that can used while progressing through Stormblood.
