  • Question: Does this have mounting brackets for the wall? What secures the stability?

    Answer: It is attached directly to the duct work with hose clamps and acts as an in-line gate to control the vacuum flow to different areas of your shop. The ducting itself is secured to the wall or rafters or wherever in your shop is most appropriate.
  • Question: are these 4 inch? Listing doesn't say

    Answer: Yes, 4 inches...almost. Loose fit on most hoses but clamps make up the gap. Some gorilla type tape helps if needed. I have had no problems with them.
  • Question: What is the throw of the 4-inch gate, from stop to stop?

    Answer: I would have to dig it out of the back of a possibles bin to measure it. Suffice it to say that I do not have it installed because it leaks too much air. The valve does not close as tightly as the black plastic one that I use now. Whatever you use, I suggest that if it is horizontal, you mount it with the valve slide pointed down since dust adn chips will gather in teh channel that holds the gate of any such valve. Sawdust in that chanel keeps the valve from closing completely. That said, the plastic one shuts tightly when mounted with the slide top down.
  • Question: Anyone use this with drain pvc? I am having very little luck keeping this connected in line between two of those said pvc pipes. Any pointers?

    Answer: We have used these Blastgates with metal pipe, and have been very satisfied with their performance. We did use selfthreading sheet metal screws to secure all joints.
  • Question: Anyone try this on 4 inch triplewall

    Answer: I ordered 3 (three) and they all work very well. I'm very satisfied!
  • Question: how wide are the flanges on the 2.5" gate?

    Answer: The flanges on my 4” gates are about 7/8 inches with a slight taper. The diameter of my gates are about 3 7/8”. The hoses are a loose fit for sure and rely on the clamps. I have a variety of different hose types and they all work fine with the clamp. On some of them, depending on the hose manufacturer, I added a couple rows of gorilla tape. Even with the taper and loose fit, they haven’t fallen off in over a year. I know this isn’t for the 2.5” but they sent me the question and I hope this helps.

    Answer: This is an "In-Line" gate and is not supposed to be mounted to a wall.

    Answer: The slide gate does not have a mounting bracket. You will need to make a custom bracket or attach it to rigid piping.

Well built and durable

For my application this is perfect. Slides great and has gaps at the end to let the crumbs not clog up the slide. As it closes it pushes the debris out the end. Easy to work with and strong. Definitely worth paying extra for a metal one instead of plastic. The plastic one didn't slide well from the start. And it kept getting clogged up and wouldn't close all the way.

These are great. I bought a few of them for a PVS air filtration system I added to my garage. When I saw their quality I immediately ordered several more to replace plastic ones I had installed under my island work bench. They feel like they're going to last a good long time.

Finally finished my sealed dust collection system.

These blast gates match the others in my system and allowed me to complete my reworked sealed system. Gates are well made and durable. I expect system to last longer than I will.

  • Question: What is the Inside diameter of the 2 1/2 inch gate

    Answer: 2 1/2 inch, although it doesn’t really matter. This thing fell apart in 2 weeks. Buy an aluminum one.
  • Question: how would this connect to 2" pvc?

    Answer: You would have to used a reducer in order to make that work from 4" to 2" you may also need to get a reaming tool to flare the 4" side to make it fit, or put on a rubber ring to make it snug.

These will clog and become useless. See pictures below.

When starting out I bought these blast gates for my wood shop. At first they seemed great I bought 6 of them for about $36. I have used these for about 7 months and I am already replacing them all with the metal ones for about $50. The problem with these is they clog up and there is virtually no way to clean them. The pocket the door slides in has no opening at the bottom to push dust and debris out. I even cut one open to show how the dust just packs into the pocket preventing it from closing completely (see picture for how far it now closes). Don’t make my mistake buy the slightly more expensive metal ones that have an opening at the bottom preventing clogs from ever happening. Sadly these have become useless and are going straight into the garbage.

Clogged track

Be careful how you orient this on installation. I ended up having to reinstall mine with the blast gate facing down because fine dust will gather and compact in the tracks and keep the gate from shutting over time.

Works - sorta

I bought this to be able to switch between my miter saw and table saw, however it is difficult to complete close off either saw, seems like something is preventing the gate from closing completely, but the is nothing there

Jams with dust.

This gate jammed with dust in no time flat. I broke it open, cleaned it out, and glued it back together. It worked for a short time, then jammed again. I purchased their aluminum version which looks MUCH better.

Clog and are almost impossible to clean

I used these for a shop vac dust collection system in my garage workshop. These blast gates worked for maybe a month before my system began loosing power. These clog with sawdust and are almost impossible to clean. Better to build your own.

Very disappointed in this, do not recommend

The "self cleaning" description on this product is laughable. If you buy this, expect to have to frequently take your system apart to pull these and clean them. Oh, and by clean them, I mean you CAN'T effectively clean them. The groove that stuff collects in and makes it so you cant close these properly are so deep you can't even get a tool in to clean it out! Everything about this is frustrating and not worth it. Time to start swapping these out for something better. Wish I'd never spent the money on these in the first place.

Downsize PVC to fit blast gates

Downsize PVC to fit blast gates

When I installed a central ductwork system for my dust collector, I used 4" PVC pipe instead of steel and saved 75 percent on the cost. But the inside diameter of the 4" PVC is 18 " too large for blast gates designed for steel ducts. My dad and I solved that problem by shrinking the PVC pipe slightly with a propane torch.

To soften the PVC for the joints, we slipped a hose clamp over the pipe and carefully heated the pipe until it softened. With the pipe end soft, he slipped the fitting into the pipe, slid the hose clamp up near the end, and tightened it to snug-up the softened PVC end. Once the pipe cooled and hardened, we removed the hose clamp to use for the next joint.

Finally, I secured the blast gate to the pipe with a sheet metal screw. With no tape, glue, or steel, and only a single hose clamp, it's a clean, simple way to build an inexpensive but effective collection system.

    Thoughts on using 2" PVC ball valves as blast gates?

    I'm using 2.5" dust collection in my small shop and I liked the idea of using some PVC ball valves for blast gates -- I just like the clean look of them and the sealed fitting versus the plastic or aluminum blast gates.

    However, when I checked them out at the big box store, I found every single one they had in stock virtually impossible to open/close -- they were far too stiff.

    Does anyone here use them? Thoughts?

    I use them in a cnc vacuum clamping manifold i built. Once they are held by pipe you can turn them in my experience.

    I haven't used them for that purpose, but I have been disillusioned with the cheaper plastic gates I have used. My solution was to make a wooden manifold with built in wooden gates close to my chip separater. It seems to have completely eliminated the clogging and jamming issues. I think that having the gates oriented so the flow through them is downward helps. Doing that may also help for your ball valves.

    I'd suggest trying one ball valve for a while as a proof of concept before building the whole setup.

    For all of my uses, they'd be too small. I have a 6" trunk line with a few 4" and 6" ports coming off of it. A 2" opening has 1/4 the open area of a 4" opening-- and I could make that work on my small CNC machine, but it's unfortunately not going to cut it on any of the other equipment.

    Depending on the size of your ducting, I've seen guys use dampers instead of blast gates. I'd imagine they don't seal nearly as well, but everything is contained in the duct with only a small handle/level on the outside.

    look into the gate valves used on sewer lines for trailers. I think they are 3" or 4" diameter.

    Ball valves work well provided they are well supported and correctly sized. Don't drop down in diameter from your ducting. They don't clog, they don't jam until they are worn beyond recognition and they are wear resistant provided they are fully open. The quickest way to wreck a ball valve in an abrasive environment is to part open them. The ball gets damaged. Fully open the ball is fully protected. Cheers

    That's actually not a bad idea. I think that 2" is sort of small, and would probably upsize them, so that the ID's were as close as I could get them.

    I have a very good dust system set up with a shop vac in my shop. The ball valves work very well and will loosen up over time. I have used my band sander to soften the edges of the housing to let the ball turn easier. Never any problem on my planer, bandsaw or grinder.

    Excellent math-and very convincing!

    This, combined with the repeated stories of difficulties opening/closing these ball valves, I'm going to opt for aluminum blast gates instead.

    If I could find 2-1/2" ball valves for a reasonable price, I might be inclined to try, but those have proven elusive. 2" valves are readily available online for only $7 or so; but going up to 2-1/2" proves cost-prohibitive--the cheapest 2-1/2" PVC ball valve I can find online or elsewhere is at least $30!

    Instead, I'll be sticking with the 2-1/2" aluminum gates (like the one below) which are available on amazon for under $8.

    I still really like the clean look and functionality of a PVC ball valve, in theory, but the problems above simply overwhelm the aesthetic appeal.

    Once you are set up with a hole jig for a router, making a blast gate is pretty quick. I used gorilla glue to glue in short stubs of pipe on each side. I made some from scraps of cherry and they do look nice. Remember the slider only has to seal on one side. I even round over the inside of then pvc on the end.

PVC Duct Blastgate

PVC ductwork can perform many functions in a home or commercial setting, but most of those involve directing air, fumes and gasses. Sometimes, PVC ductwork is used in vacuum systems, and this requires the use of PVC duct blastgates to help regulate the suction. PVC duct blastgates are designed to concentrate suction when collecting dust and debris from a ductwork system.
