Biomedical engineering combines intensive training in research methods, techniques, and practical skills with a solid science and engineering curriculum that provides breadth and depth in the field. A key aspect of biomedical engineering is its interdisciplinary nature; introductory courses in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics, and foundation/concentration courses build the basis for creating the synergy among these disciplines that is required in the practice of biomedical engineering.

Bioengineering - Biomaterials (M.S.)

The Biomaterials track of the Bioengineering M.S. degree involves the study of the interaction of biomaterials with their environment in the context of biomedical applications. Students will be encouraged to focus their studies on one of several bio-medically relevant topics, including tissue engineering, biological delivery, or the interaction of biomaterials with mammalian tissues.

Materials Science and Engineering (Ph.D.)

Materials scientists study how the history of a material influences its structure and properties, advancing understanding in research areas that include metallurgy, solid-state physics, and biomaterials. The interdisciplinary Materials Science and Engineering Ph.D. program offers graduate students a wide array of opportunities to study and develop materials that will change the world.

Biomedical Engineering (M.S.)

The booming biomedical industry demands skilled professionals whose expertise can cross traditional boundaries of science and engineering. The Tufts M.S. in Biomedical Engineering addresses this need through a highly interdisciplinary course of study. Students focus on one of several biomedically relevant topics, including tissue engineering, biological delivery, or the interaction of biomaterials with mammalian tissues.

As a student in the Tufts Biomedical Engineering program, you will find an exceptional academic experience, distinguished by close faculty interactions that will propel you from graduate study to your career.

Master's degrees require a minimum of 30 SHUs and the fulfillment of at least 10 courses at the level or above with grades of S (satisfactory) or at least a B-. Program requirements may vary.

Biomedical Engineering (certificate)

The booming biomedical industry demands skilled professionals whose expertise can cross traditional boundaries of science and engineering. Companies are seeking electrical engineers who understand the medical uses of diagnostic imaging instrumentation, biotechnology professionals with training in tissue engineering to develop tissue implants, and mechanical engineers who are well-versed in biomaterials to design artificial joints.

The Biomedical Engineering Certificate program addresses this need through a highly interdisciplinary course of study that allows students to focus on biomedical instrumentation, biomedical optics, biomaterials/biotechnology and tissue engineering or other related areas of study. Courses are taught by faculty in engineering as well as experienced clinical professionals from Tufts' world-renowned health science schools.

With this four-course certificate, engineers can launch careers in biomedical instrumentation design. Clinical practitioners and technicians can shift careers to biomedical equipment sales. It is also a useful technology complement for executives, medical professionals, and policy makers interested in the application of technology to the medical, business or legal profession.

Students interested in earning a graduate degree can often apply the certificate courses toward a Tufts master's degree in biomedical engineering.
