Step 1. Locate the reset pinhole at the back of your router. The button is usually small but it should have a different color compared to other buttons so it’s easier to identify.
Step 2. Using the pin, gently press and hold the button for at least 30 seconds. Hold it until the lights in front of the modem turned off.

How to Reset a Comcast Modem

When using Comcast's Xfinity line of cable and voice modems for your business office, there are occasionally times when resetting the modem is prudent. If you notice employees waiting on file transfers or if you cannot connect to the Internet or your connection is painfully slow, a reset can restore your modem to optimal functionality under most circumstances. Resetting the modem varies slightly depending on the model of modem.
Some Comcast modems are equipped with a "Reset" button for quick resets. To reset these modems, locate the "Reset" button on the front or back of your modem. The location varies from one model to the next, but the button is always cleared marked. Press and hold the button for at least five seconds. Depending on your modem model, you may need to use a thin, non-metallic object like the tip of a ballpoint pen to push the button. Release the button and allow the modem a few moments to complete the reset process.
For modems without a reset button, you'll have to "power cycle" the modem. Shut down your computer or router. You only need shut down whichever component is directly connected to the modem. Unplug your modem's power cord from the outlet and leave it unplugged for no less than 10 seconds. Once you reconnect the modem, wait 30 seconds before starting your computer or router back up.
Comcast customers who also are subscribed to voice or phone service from Comcast use a special modem with a reset button. Locate the "Reset" button on the front or back of your modem and press and hold the reset button using a thin, non-metallic object such as the tip of a ballpoint pen. Hold the button until the lights on the face of the modem turn off. Release the button and wait for the modem to cycle back up and reinitialize. This process may take as long as five minutes, but it is necessary to restore full functionality to both Internet and voice services.
Failure to Resolve Issue
If resetting your modem does not successfully restore your connectivity, try resetting the modem again or using the power cycling instructions for models that feature a reset button. If connectivity is still absent, contact Comcast technical support for further instructions because there may be an issue with service in your area or the modem's hardware.

What Does Restarting Your xFi Gateway Do?
Like most electronic devices, restarting your xFi Gateway will clear any unfinished or lagging processes that might be causing network issues.
It wipes out the memory and starts the device on a clean slate.
When you Restart your xFi Gateway, you naturally won’t be able to use your home network until the procedure is complete.
What you may not know is that you won’t be able to make phone calls, even emergency calls, if you’ve got Xfinity Voice.
You also won’t be able to access your cameras and other Smart Home accessories if you have Xfinity Home. Luckily your Xfinity Security Sensors will remain unaffected.
Restart xFi Gateway through the Website
You can restart the xFi Gateway through Xfinity’s website. If you’re renting a gateway modem from Xfinity, we highly recommend investing in an Xfinity modem instead of renting.
If you intend on keeping your xFi Gateway, however, you can fix it by going offline by restarting it.
Simply visit xfinity.com/myxfi and log in using your Xfinity credentials. Scroll down till you spot “Troubleshooting” and select “Restart”.
You can also visit xfinity.com/myaccount and log in with your Xfinity credentials. Click on “Manage Internet”, and then on “Restart Modem”.
Clicking on “Start Troubleshooting” will kick start the process, which will take approximately seven minutes to complete.
Restart xFi Gateway through the Xfinity App
If you’re on your smartphone, you can download the Xfinity app for free either from Google Play or the App Store on iOS.
Log in using your Xfinity credentials and navigate to “Connection Problems” and select “Restart Gateway”.
Alternatively, if you’ve got the Xfinity My Account app, log in using your Xfinity credentials, select the Internet panel.
Select your gateway from the list of devices and select “Restart this device”.
Note that this process could take anywhere from five to seven minutes to complete.
Manually Restart Your xFi Gateway
The old reliable technique in IT – turning it off and on again is always worth a shot. However, it is advisable that you try other methods before resorting to this.
Simply turn the Gateway off, turn off the switch and unplug the power cable from the socket.
Wait for a minute or two to avoid sparks from static buildup and plug the power cable back in and turn on your xFi Gateway.
Restart xFi Gateway through the Admin Tool
While you’re connected to the home network, open your web browser and type in http://10.0.0.1 into the address bar to head to the Xfinity Admin Tool.
Sign in using the credentials of your xFi Gateway, and not your Xfinity User ID and Password. The default credentials are (in lower case):
Once you’re in, head over to Troubleshooting and select “Restart/Restore Gateway” and you’ll see the following restart options.
- RESET: This will initiate the same process as a Manual Restart.
- RESET WIFI MODULE: This’ll switch off your xFi Gateway’s Wi-Fi radio and turns it back on.
- RESET WIFI ROUTER: This’ll keep the internet connection up while restarting the Wi-Fi router portion of the xFi Gateway.
- RESTORE WIFI SETTINGS – This completely restores your Wi-Fi settings (e.g., SSID/WiFi network name, WiFi password) on your xFi Gateway to the original factory settings. You’ll be disconnected from the network and will have to reconnect to the network. It’ll have the original SSID and you’ll have to use the original password.
- RESTORE FACTORY SETTINGS – This option resets everything, including firewall settings, managed devices, parental controls, Wi-Fi credentials, etc. You’ll be temporarily disconnected from the network. If prompted, customize the WiFi name and password and reconnect devices to your home network using these credentials
xFi Pods Not Connecting
While the xFi Gateway is great, I needed more coverage to be able to watch Netflix on my bed in my room. That’s why I also have the xFi Pods – Xfinity’s Wi-Fi extenders.
So when they’re not connecting, that often leaves me annoyed. Here’s what you can do to get your xFi Pods connecting again.
Reboot Your Network Gateway
You can fix most problems with the Xfinity Pods by restarting the xFi Gateway.
However, many people avoid this step as they think it may be time-consuming.
To reboot your Gateway, here is what you need to do:
- Ensure that all Xfinity Pods in your home mesh are unplugged from their outlets.
- Now, unplug the xFi gateway and then wait for 60 seconds.
- Once 60 seconds are up, plug your Gateway again and wait for the light on the Gateway to turn white.
- If the light keeps flickering and does not turn solid white even after a few minutes, then the problem is with your internet service and not the Xfinity home-mesh.
- Once the light on your Xfinity Gateway turns solid white, plug in all of your pods.
- After you plug in the pods, the light on them should first turn solid white, then they should “breathe” (that is, the light will slowly fade in and out), and once the pods are online, the light should go out.
- Once all pods are connected, you should be able to connect to the internet with ease.
Check the Location of Your Xfinity Pod
Improper posting of your Xfinity Pods can cause it to go offline. Ensure that you are following the recommended spacing guidelines.
When spacing your pods, here is what you should keep in mind:
- When plugging in your Pod, ensure that it is not in an outlet with a switch, as it may increase the chances of interference. Remove your Pod from a switched outlet to a different one in the same room.
- Your Xfinity Pods should be placed in the open and not behind furniture or tables to reduce wireless interference.
- Place each Pod about halfway from the Gateway and the device you want to use—using this position such that the Pod is located midway between the Gateway and your device helps you enjoy optimal performance from your pods.
- Place each Pod at least 20 to 30 feet away from one another, that is, about one room away. When placing pods in adjacent rooms, keep this recommended distance in mind.
Factory Reset Your Xfinity Pod
To Factory Reset the Xfinity Pod, you have to remove the Pod from your Xfinity App and then add it back again.
Here are the steps you can follow:
- Launch the Xfinity App on your smartphone and tap on the “Network” option on the bottom of your screen.
- Tap on the Pod that you want to reset, and choose the Remove Pod option.
- Once you remove the Pod, unplug it from the outlet.
- Wait for some time, and then follow the steps to set up your Xfinity Pod again, and you are good to go.
While all internet service providers promise a seamless internet connection, some snags are bound to occur.
When the issues are few, it is easy to deal with them. But if your xFi Gateway goes offline or xFi pods won’t activate, it can be annoying.
However, easy and tested methods such as restarting the Gateway either through the website or the app, checking whether your pods are plugged in correctly and located at an adequate distance from each other, or resetting your pods can help you get back your internet.
