    Confusion about Zen'o's erasure/Future as a whole

I feel like Zen'o didn't really erase all of the future timeline, but more so he erased a frame of time, which allows the present (and by association any concept of a future) to not exist. This could explain how the past can be so freely travelled to. Though I still don't understand Trunks's...

Low 2-C Battle of Gods, but I have a good argument :3

Introduction Beerus and Champa threatening to destroy both Universes 6 and 7 during their brief confrontation during the Tournament of Destroyers Saga has been considered a Tier 2 feat for ages at this point; in fact, after some discussion, the two of them were eventually given essentially a Low...

Is this not enough for total universal destruction? (yes, a DBS question)

I get that you need some form of statement or demonstration of the entire timespace being destroyed, but c'mon. This is a bit ridiculous, dontcha think? Numerous times, it is stated that the entire universe/the world would be annihilated and would disappear entirely. There are a lot of words...

Idk if this is another taboo topic for the dragon ball verse (since apparently a lot is) but I wanted to try at least. So we know from this scan that speed and power level within dragon ball is linear, and from this scan (daizenshuu 7 world view) that power/strength is what determines power...

Adding a Dragon Ball Super explanation page to the wiki

So, during my time on the wiki, I've noticed a lot of confusion over why Dragon Ball Super is tiered the way it is - namely, concerning the 12 universes and their status as separate space-time continua. Many people, myself included, have historically made threads questioning the legitimacy of...

Currently Beerus is listed as Low 2-C not just because of Infinite Zamasu but because of his fight with Champa that would’ve destroyed both universes. It being dubbed “Half 2-C” in AP. Beerus is MFTL+ for flying to a planet 1/4 the speed of Whis. I have a problem with this. 1. What does this 1/4 statement come from? 2. When looking at Whis’ speed, he’s almost 500 quad c. Beerus is the main antagonist of the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods film and the God of Destruction Beerus Saga but becomes a supporting character in later sagas.

Concept and creation

Prior to his actual creation as a character, Beerus was first referenced in the manga chapter "The Zeta Sword" and the episode "Out From the Broken Sword" as the one who sealed Old Kai in the Z Sword.

The scriptwriter Yūsuke Watanabe originally envisioned Beerus as a villainous character who infects people with evil and was the one who gave the Saiyan race their ruthless characteristics.[3] Also, Beerus originally looked like a lizard, but Toriyama changed his design entirely.[4]

In accordance with the original concept for this character, his name in Japanese, Birusu (ビルス), is a pun on "virus" (ビールス; German pronunciation).[5] However, the series' original author, Akira Toriyama, thought his name is a pun on the alcoholic beverage, "beer".

He is modeled after the 14-year-old cat currently living with Akira Toriyama, Debo, a Cornish Rex.[6] In spite of developing a serious illness, and the vet declaring it didn’t have long to live, it miraculously got better on its own, and the vet said it might be some kind of demon.

Beerus' physical design also takes some inspiration from Ancient Egyptian deities.[7]

Beerus was going to fight the Z Fighters with a spoon or fork, but the Battle of Gods animation director Tadayoshi Yamamuro thought it would be hard for him to fight like that, so he suggested switching it to chopsticks.[4]

Appearance

Beerus is a purple anthropomorphic cat with golden yellow eyes and large pointed ears. His form is hairless and while overall defined inbuilt, he is very thin and bony. He is of a similar height to Goku, being slightly shorter, but his ears make him appear taller. He dons black, blue, and gold Egyptian-looking attire with the same white and orange diamond decorations as his mentor Whis.

In the "Super Star Guide's" minicomic teasing Champa's appearance and his resemblance to Beerus, Beerus appears wearing Champa's clothing, and also being inflated by Whis to appear identical to Champa.

Personality

"The inevitability of his existence does not give meaning to what he does. Beerus acts only on his own whim. He is nothing but bottled chaos."
— Elder Kai describing Beerus

Beerus is powerful, yet lazy and playful (like most cats). His similarities to cat-like behavior also display in his love for long sleep sessions and how he grooms himself. Beerus is always in a bad mood when he wakes up from his deep slumber but becomes less grumpy the more awake he is. Similar to many cats, he likes to display dominance and will claim whatever he desires to have without much consideration for how it will affect others. He is also a gourmet, and his planet is stocked with fish and other sorts of food. While he is a fearsome god, his cat-like gestures and his variety of facial expressions separate him from the more malevolent antagonists in the series.[9] He has a very indifferent behavior toward death, being the God of Destruction, and cares little to none about death and the billions, possibly trillions of lives he has taken over the years he has been the God of Destruction. He often uses the threat of destroying Earth as a means to get what he wants or as a simple warning to Whis and the other Z fighters.

However, Beerus is hotheaded and somewhat selfish and can become easily angered over trivial matters, such as being beaten in a game of Hide-and-Seek, being served greasy food, or being denied pudding. He is also confident in his superior power, not without cause, as he proved to be the strongest opponent ever fought by the Z Fighters at the time. He is also shown to be egotiscial, not wanting to admit whenever he is wrong about something or that he is to blame for a particular situation that was either directly or indirectly caused by him.

In Dragon Ball Super, Beerus is seen to be more malicious than he was in the movie, not to mention more comical. He is also comically argumentative and abusive towards his servants. When Oracle Fish forgot the name of Beerus' ultimate adversary, he suggests to Whis to cut his feedings from "three times a day to two times a day". Beerus never likes it when he does not get the respect he deserves as a god. In the Universe 6 Saga, Beerus jokes about "destroying a world using the Super Dragon Balls," but has a sinister smirk when talking about it, which has Bulma suspicious and seeks to find the Super Dragon Balls before him. He is also demanding of Vegeta, treating him as his servant boy. Along with this, he never cares about the lives of the other fighters of Universe 7, and would consider his fighters as "pawns", but he showed genuine appreciation when he praised Yamcha for winning a baseball match. His cheering and enthusiastic attitude are seen even more in the Tournament of Power, cheering on any of the fighters who knock an opponent out of the ring, especially weaker fighters. When he observed Master Roshi fight with 3 Universe 4 fighters, he was cheering him on and keep calling him "Old Man", until Krillin told him his name, and after Roshi is revived by Goku, he ask Krillin what his name is and when Roshi eliminated himself Beerus called him Master, clearly showing respect for Roshi and his very intelligent fighting style and common sense, despite their power (and age) difference (Beerus being millions of years old, while Master Roshi being 350 years old as of Age 780.). He warmly praises Gohan for defeating Dyspo, even though he himself was taken out of the ring. He also respectfully addresses Gohan by name, rather than referring to him as "Goku's son".

Despite his extreme power and role as God of Destruction, Beerus is surprisingly well-mannered, respectful, and polite, and can be quite sociable and friendly when in a good mood; he uses exclusively polite pronouns, from the gentle-polite-masculine Boku to refer to himself (much like Gohan, Trunks, Goten, and Babidi in the series) instead of the coarse-masculine ore (every other main adult-male in the series), and Kimi (an affectionately-polite form of "My Good Sir/Good Madame") to refer to everyone. Since becoming acquainted with Goku and his friends, Beerus' attitude has lightened somewhat, becoming even more comical than before. While still arrogant and indifferent, he has become noticeably more tempered, which leads to comical antics. Whereas before he would destroy planets and all its inhabitants for even the slightest disrespect, he has begun showing considerable restraint despite the various outbursts from the Earthlings' antics, this is because of Zeno becoming Goku's friend, and likewise, the advent of the Tournament of Power. Likewise, the Earthlings have become more casual and relatively calm in his presence, something Beerus seemingly has no problem with, when angry, rather than showing off his aura and attack, he comically yells, demands, and nags at them, specifically Goku, partially due to his friendship with Zeno.

While Beerus does not get overly emotional, he is implied to have grown to care about Goku as he is seen clenching his teeth and fists, and quietly laments If this is truly the end of Goku and he says his name. Likewise, when Goku is revealed to be alive, Beerus does not get overjoyed about it but just calmly smiles. That is, until something truly breathtaking and miraculous happens, which is evident when Beerus is capable to show genuine happiness for and taking pride in Goku, especially after the Saiyan finally ascends into the Perfected Ultra Instinct state. By the events of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Beerus' relationship with Bulma and the Earth warriors has continued to grow more casual and positive as, despite his open dislike at the request, he was trusted with caring for Bulla while the others went off. He was ultimately even fine with the babysitting on his lap and tugging on his clothing. He also uses his tail to entertain her. He also chooses not to confront Broly, preferring to allow Goku, Vegeta, their fusion Gogeta, Golden Frieza (when he is attacked by the rampaging Super Saiyan Broly), and Whis (who uses Autonomous Ultra Instinct to hold off Broly after Golden Frieza is defeated, bowing out once Gogeta appears) to deal with the Legendary Super Saiyan. Goku however suggests this was due to Broly potentially being stronger than Beerus.

He appears to have a very high view of his power, as he always claims that his power completely outclasses that of Goku, Vegeta, and others; however, he does eagerly await for an individual to rival his power. While Beerus dislike evil beings, he has no problem with using them, as shown by his relationship with Frieza whom Beerus allowed to maintain a vast galactic empire and even act as Beerus' agent of destruction. He also recruited the Saiyans, led by King Vegeta, to obtain the universe's most comfortable pillow, though King Vegeta's stinginess caused him to try and trick Beerus by giving him the second most comfortable pillow. Beerus realized the truth and punished King Vegeta for it, while sparing Planet Vegeta for the time being. It was likely because of this and the Saiyan's arrogant attitude that Beerus told Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta, as he felt that destroying it himself was too much of a bother, thus Beerus himself was partially responsible for the Genocide of the Saiyans, though Frieza ultimately destroyed the Saiyans for his own reasons. Beerus himself only tolerated Frieza's existence due to his power and his willingness to work for Beerus out of fear. Beerus also told Frieza that he would not interfere with his revenge. However, after Frieza destroys the Earth, Beerus allows Whis to use his Temporal Do-Over to give Goku a second chance to finish Frieza off and save the Earth, though this was mainly due to the fact he preferred Goku, Vegeta, and the Z Fighters over the return of Frieza and his evil empire, as well as his love of Earth food. While Beerus joked about using the Super Dragon Balls to destroy Universe 7 which Bulma took seriously, he ironically had Whis use the Super Dragon Balls to restore Universe 6's Earth, effectively giving his brother an Earth of his own, though had Whis keep quiet about the nature of his wish to maintain his reputation so as to not appear soft. Additionally, he ends up saving Goku from having his body stolen by Zamasu by killing the rogue Shinjin, though Goku Black's Time Ring prevented him from being erased. In the anime, Beerus had Whis travel to the past in Trunks' timeline to warn his counterpart Future Beerus of the threat posed by Zamasu and of the events that lead to Future Shin's death which caused Future Beerus to die due to their life link, creating a new future timeline where Future Shin and Future Beerus are still alive and the events that lead to multiverses being erased to not occur, giving Future Mai and Future Trunks a timeline to live in after their timeline was destroyed. Thus, Beerus has technically revived or prevented the Earth's destruction three times, once in the main timeline, once in Universe 6, and once in the alternate future timeline, showing that he can at times can be a benevolent deity. In the manga, however, he allows Future Trunks and Future Mai to travel back in time using the Time Machine to prevent Future Shin's death in order to save Future Beerus as well as inform Future Shin of the threat posed by the Zamasus and their Project Zero Mortals, all with Present Beerus' blessing and approval, as it would save his future counterpart.

In response to Goku Black and Zamasu's claims they seek justice, Beerus points out his philosophy that nobody who trumpets justice is ever righteous themselves which is proven by the evil actions of the Zamases as they carry out their self-righteous and insane Project Zero Mortals. This may also explain Beerus' willingness to somewhat tolerate the existence of openly evil people such as King Vegeta and Frieza provided they respect his position and do not upset him or the balance between creation and destruction that he, the Kais, and Supreme Kais maintain.

Due to his power and position, he is somewhat fearless, as there are very few who can match his power, let alone capable of killing him in combat. Beerus is not hesitant to kill other lifeforms, even his rival, Goku, as he threatened to destroy Goku if he got involved with Zeno. However, he is shown to be terrified of Zeno, in a manner very similar to how the Kais and other gods are scared of Beerus himself. Due to his life link to Shin, the only active Supreme Kai of Universe 7, Beerus has a strong desire to prevent his death, as it would cause Beerus himself to die as well. Although he is the God of Destruction and has destroyed several things, he also was demonstrated to have limits as to the kind of destruction he would condone, as he was shown to be very angry at Goku for his role in the twoZenos'Tournament of Power, which will result in the losing universes being erased from existence, and also held enough disgust with Zamasu's Project Zero Mortals that he immediately erased the present-day Zamasu when the latter was exposed.

His relationship with Shin is shown to be strained as he is usually rude and condescending towards him, not particularly caring what he does as long as he is alive nor does he care for his input. After the Grand Minister announced the stipulation for the Tournament of Power, he angrily told Shin that he was too hands-off with his approach and blamed him for their universe's low mortal level. Due to his sealing Old Kai in the Z Sword after getting into a trivial argument with him during a meeting on the Sacred World of the Kai, the elder Supreme Kai holds a grudge against Beerus, though in Xenoverse 2 Beerus calms down after learning that it was Old Kai who bumped into him, showing that he is willing to act civil despite their history however after hearing Old Kai mutter to himself in an angered tone revealing he still held a grudge against Beerus for sealing him, he tests Beerus' patience enough for Beerus to consider destroying him (it should be noted Beerus originated from an altered timeline and Old Kai presumably originated from Age 852 and was assisting Chronoa at the time so his death likely would not affect Beerus in any case, or Beerus is life-linked to Shin, and not Old Kai) though fortunately, Whis was able to pacify the situation with food. Unlike Old Kai, Beerus has no problem using the Dragon Balls which again shows their contrasting personalities. However, it should be noted that by sealing Old Kai in the Z Sword he may have inadvertently saved the wise Supreme Kai from perishing or being absorbed during Kid Buu's rampage, allowing Old Kai to assist the Z Fighters and Shin during the Majin Buu conflict, during which time Beerus was asleep and unable to assist Shin in dealing with the powerful Majin.

In Xenoverse, after faking to be controlled by Demigra's Dark Magic due to being as a god, Beerus noted he would enjoy destroying Demigra because he "seems like an evil guy", and also out of revenge, considering Demigra's attempt to control him "a blasphemous action that deserved punishment". Beerus also enjoys fighting strong opponents, as he looks forward to Goku, Vegeta, and the Future Warrior becoming stronger. He also encourages the Future Warrior to see if they have a skill that can defeat him.

In Xenoverse 2, Beerus is taken aback when Mira has the audacity to tell him to be quiet when he arrives to save the Masked Saiyan after Future Warrior chases him to Age 778 during Beerus' fight with Super Saiyan God Goku. However, instead of destroying Mira, Beerus is impressed by his lack of fear, as it had been a while since a mortal had the courage to talk back to him and allows Mira to fight the Future Warrior without interference. However, as the fight drags on, Beerus loses his patience and threatens to destroy everyone present, though is stopped when Chronoa sends him a box full of pudding cups, which calms the God of Destruction to the point he even offers Mira and the Masked Saiyan some pudding, which causes the pair to leave as Mira considers Beerus' friendly attitude a buzz-kill. However, as the pudding was made by Chronoa herself, who is notorious for her poor cooking skills, Beerus is enraged at how horrible it was, forcing Whis and the Future Warrior to subdue him as Goku is incapacitated by stomach cramps after eating some of the pudding. Beerus eventually calms down and refuses to eat any more of Chronoa's cooking when she suggests making it up to him. While eating his sundae with Whis in Age 779 during Frieza's revenge, Whis and Beerus are contacted by Chronoa who informs them that Towa and Mira are attacking the Time Nest and asks for Beerus' assistance by offering cream puffs, which she claims were made by Future Trunks to alleviate Beerus' concerns that she made them. However, Beerus is furious when he and Whis arrive at the Time Nest and discover that they were deceived by Towa who had hacked into the Time Nest's communications and pretended to be Chronoa to lure Beerus and Whis from Age 779, preventing Whis from assisting Goku like in the original history, causing Goku and all of his friends saved by Whis to die when Frieza uses his Earth Breaker to destroy the Earth. Like with Demigra, Beerus is outraged by Towa's blasphemous act of deceiving him in such a manner and demands to know where she is so he can destroy the Demon Scientist, though like in Xenoverse he later decides to leave her to defeat to the Time Patrol as he is impressed by the new Future Warrior's power after they manage to best Whis in a sparring session, which Beerus was forced to leave after Whis drew his symbol on Beerus' forehead. Also despite his past history with Old Kai, whom he had sealed within the Z Sword, Beerus is for the most part civil towards Old Kai, though threatens to destroy him when he tests Beerus' patience when Old Kai still holds a grudge for being sealed while complaining to himself loud enough that Beerus can hear him, though Whis manages to defuse the situation with food.

He has a strong sibling rivalry with his twin brother Champa. The two tend to argue about minor trivial things such as food toppings and tend to compete over who has the better Universe. As their fighting between the two could easily destroy both Universe 6 and Universe 7, Beerus and Champa have agreed to food competitions as a way to compete without causing needless destruction, though as shown by Champa's visit to Beerus' planet during the Universe 6 Saga in the anime which resulted in a brief fight that destroyed a good portion of the room before Whis and Vados stepped in. Beerus is shown to be more mature than Champa who is more childish and tends to throw temper tantrums, though they both are gourmets who enjoy a good meal, though Champa tends to favor sweet foods, which Beerus finds childish. While he tends to argue and compete with his brother whenever they are together, he does care about Champa as shown by his wish to Super Shenron to restore the Earth of Universe 6, giving his brother his own Earth, though it may have also been his way of preventing Champa from trying to acquire the Earth of Universe 7 through another competition. When Champa is erased during the Tournament of Power, Beerus remains stoic with his eyes closed but turns to look at Champa when Champa calls out to him. After Champa is erased, Beerus remains stoic, but the fact that he is quiet and stoic, instead of his usual self, implies that he did care about Champa on some level. It should be noted that he also did not gloat or tease Champa for his loss, though this may be another example of his maturity.

Beerus is also somewhat paranoid as he is shown to not like the idea of other individuals hoping to become the next destroyer, going so far as to threaten those he thinks might be tempted.

Another trait of Beerus is that he will destroy things on a whim. This is one reason why his Universe has such a low mortal level as Beerus never gives civilizations and societies a chance to properly grow, thus the low development is similar to that of Third-World nations in real life. Old Kai notes this, viewing his destruction and meaningless and regarding Beerus as nothing but bottled chaos.

Beerus is rather lazy at his job as a God of Destruction. He spends great deals of time napping and eating than performing his duties as a Destroyer God, as explained by Whis when Zeno arrives at the Tournament of Destroyers. Additionally, the Gods of Destruction are responsible for eliminating threats, but Beerus has rarely ever done this, allowing Frieza to operate his empire and destroy several civilizations, not interfering to eliminate Majin Buu when he killed the Supreme Kais, and not investigating New Namek's decreased energy level simply because it was too much of a hassle and there was no good food for him to eat.

Biography

Background

Out of the many gods in the universe, Beerus is the most feared.[10] He is feared by the Kais, Supreme Kais, King Cold, Frieza, Cooler[11], King Vegeta, Vegeta, and even Shenron himself. As a God of Destruction, he is tasked with maintaining balance in the universe.[12] Beerus is the God of Destruction of Universe 7, and his administrative zone includes planet Earth. He slumbers for several years to several decades straight, and he destroys planets in his administrative zone during the few years when he is awake.[2] This is because destruction is required in order to create new planets, but he does not act on the Supreme Kais' orders, nor does he try to coordinate his actions with them;[2] the god destroys according to his own judgment. Also, because he is quite capricious, Beerus destroys even important planets "without a second thought". When he finds it bothersome, he lets someone else act as an agent of destruction. While he is awake, tense days for the Supreme Kais continue, as nobody knows how many planets will be sacrificed.[2]

Having existed for hundreds of millions of years, at some point in time Beerus was trained in martial arts by Whis. Beerus once lost an arm-wrestling against one of the other Gods of Destruction, in the anime, it was implied to be Belmod, while in the manga, it was Quitela. Once every 1,000 years, the Supreme Kais and the Gods of Destruction go to each other's realms and hold a coordination meeting. During one of these meetings held 75 Million Before Age, they got into an argument "over some trifling situation", and the short-tempered Beerus sealedthe Supreme Kai at the time away inside the Z Sword, as it would not have been proper for him to destroy the Sacred World of the Kai itself.[13] Once, he stopped by the Time Nest and met Chronoa, the Supreme Kai of Time.[14] Another day, he stopped by King Kai's Planet, which was larger at the time. He and King Kai played hide-and-seek (or a car-racing video game depending on the version),[15] and Beerus lost, so the planet was destroyed by the peeved Destroyer. King Kai then took a large leftover fragment, whittled it down to a sphere, and built a road on it so that he could have fun driving there. This became King Kai's current planet.[15] In "Showdown on King Kai's World! Goku vs. Beerus the Destroyer!", Beerus claims that he made his planet smaller because he "didn't like the food".

One time on Beerus' birthday, he ate the only Puff-Puff fruit that was on his cake. Champa got furious because Beerus ate it and it was also his birthday, both Beerus and Champa fought throughout the universe, destroying multiple planets. The two are eventually stopped by their attendants because their destruction could lead to the end of the universe, but both Beerus and Champa established they did not care. Beerus and Champa have an agreement "not to have fighting showdowns, but rather have food showdowns instead".

In the manga, at some point in time, Beerus participated in the All Universe Hide and Seek Tournament held by Zeno. But when he hid and fell asleep for fifty years during the tournament, it had to be canceled. Zeno, who was enjoying the event, became furious and had to be calmed down by the gods from the 11 universes. Since then, the other Gods of Destruction have felt disdain towards Beerus.[16]

One time when Beerus woke up, he sneezed and blew up of two of his world's Suns, causing Whis to re-do time preventing him from doing it again. At some point in time, Beerus met Frieza. The two got along fairly well as they both enjoyed destroying things. However, one time Frieza got carried away and caused Beerus to get angry, with Beerus fighting Frieza and easily defeating the tyrant.[17] Beerus also claims that he once went to Earth, and dinosaurs "took a rude attitude" toward him, so he wiped them out.[18] Another day, King Vegeta treated Beerus and Whis to a feast in his palace on Planet Vegeta and Beerus used the Saiyan King as a footrest while he was eating. Prince Vegeta, who was just a child at that time, saw this and became upset, but remained silent. In Dragon Ball Super, Beerus had tasked King Vegeta with finding the best pillow in the universe which he achieved through a brutal military campaign destroying several civilizations in the process, though Beerus was willing to overlook it as long as King Vegeta handed the pillow over to him as requested, the Saiyan King foolishly tried to pass off the second most comfortable pillow as the first which was discovered by Beerus, though King Vegeta submitted to Beerus' punishment and thus both King Vegeta and Planet Vegeta were sparred from immediate destruction. Beerus also allowed the young Prince Vegeta to live despite his willingness to attack him as he saw potential in the young Saiyan Prince. Before going to sleep, Beerus granted Frieza permission to destroy Planet Vegeta because the Saiyans annoyed him and due to King Vegeta's disobedience, though Frieza ultimately chose to do so due to his own fear of the Saiyans growing power and their potential to become Super Saiyans. Beerus also considered destroying Frieza but never went through with it.

In Age 739, Beerus is told a prophecy by the Oracle Fish that in thirty-nine years, he would face an opponent that would excite him called, the Super Saiyan God. After he is told this, Beerus goes to sleep.

God of Destruction Beerus Saga

Main article: God of Destruction Beerus Saga

Beerus has awoken from thirty-nine years of slumber and in the anime is joined by Whis visiting a planet inhabited by pig-like humanoids. Beerus investigates most of his food they presented him by just touching it and sniffing it; he forgets his manners as pointed out by Whis. Beerus asks about one of the dishes they brought him, which he believes to be dessert. After eating it, Beerus states that it is tastier than he expected and compliments the use of salt in the dish. However, he complains about it having too much grease. After deciding, Beerus destroys half the planet with a mere tap on the table. Before leaving, Whis states that what Beerus did was a bit harsh, since he thought the planet's food was tasty. However, Beerus complains about the grease in the food, stating that it is unhealthy and makes one sluggish all day. Beerus then proclaims that he had done the galaxy a favor.

While waiting for dinosaur meat on his planet, Beerus tries to remember his dream of the warrior who he still not seems to remember. Impatient after waiting 2 minutes and 20 seconds, Beerus travels with Whis on another planet, who was supposed to get a full 3 minutes, and encounters the leader, after stubbornly refusing dinosaur meat, despite Whis' pleading efforts, the arrogant chief transforms into a monstrous form to combat Beerus, who arrived to confront him. Beerus effortlessly blocks the leader's punches with one finger and dodges all of his blasts. The leader tries to burn him with a fireball attack, but to no avail, as Beerus simply throws it back at him using his finger. He eventually defeats the leader. Beerus, having enough of the insolence the leader has shown, and never minding the dinosaur meat, destroys the planet with a small ki ball. As he and Whis were watching the planet's destruction, Beerus sees a silhouette of the warrior from his dream and starts to remember the name of the powerful warrior who could entertain him endlessly. Beerus begins to remember the name and confirms the name of the warrior like none other than the Super Saiyan God. After a few questions, Beerus and Whis return home.

In the manga, these events transpire slightly differently. Instead of being shown visiting multiple planets, Beerus instead goes to one planet, which has insectoid natives. When Beerus is having his meal on the planet he finds that the drink they have given him is poisoned - though this does nothing to the god - the insectoids then attempt to attack Beerus with their crossbows, he easily destroys the entire planet with Wrath of the God of Destruction. As they are floating in space watching the planet's destruction, Beerus notes that one of the dishes he had "Soup Yasi Jinkot" reminded him of a prophetic dream he had of the "Super Saiyan God", and so he and Whis head back to Beerus' planet so he can try and remember better.

On the way back to his planet, Beerus continues to remember the name of the figure and starts to want something sweet for thinking so long. After traveling so long, Beerus starts to question Whis' speed and is reminded that he is the fastest in the universe. Once they arrive, Beerus summons the Oracle Fish to remember the warrior of his dream. The Oracle Fish seems to not remember and was threatened by Beerus to remember or she will get fed only twice a day instead of three times. After hearing this, the Oracle Fish remembered and confirms that the warrior's name is indeed the Super Saiyan God, which confirms Beerus' dream. Whis objects that this warrior never existed, and wonders if the Saiyans knew, but he remembered that he told Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta because the Saiyans were "repulsive".

While taking a bath, Whis confirms Beerus that a few Saiyans survived the genocide, much to his surprise, and they all live on Earth. He also mentions that Frieza was defeated by a Saiyan known as Goku, who could become a Super Saiyan. Beerus, intrigued, seeks to find Goku, who currently is training on King Kai's Planet, to confront him about the Super Saiyan God warrior. Beerus and Whis make their way to King Kai's planet, taking 26 minutes, as they have planned to eat grilled salmon on the way there. Mentioned by Old Kai, since Beerus' awakening, he has destroyed eight and one-half of the universe's planets. On his way to King Kai's planet, Beerus complains about the food Whis packed for him, having "tired" of what he was eating, even though he had it once 160 years before when he destroyed Planet Monser, according to Whis. They would arrive at King Kai's planet in 10 minutes.

After King Kai's failed efforts to stop them from making contact, Beerus notices the hiding Goku, meeting him, and questions whether or not he is the Super Saiyan God from his dream. Goku (who goes from Super Saiyan to Super Saiyan 3) immediately challenges him to a sparring match but is unable to land a single hit on the god of destruction. Beerus then counters by flicking Goku in the forehead, then immediately knocks him down with a pressure-point jab in the shoulder. He then leaves with Whis to find Vegeta at Bulma's birthday party.

Upon arriving on Earth, Beerus finds Vegeta and starts messing with him by appearing elsewhere. Beerus stops and tries to remind Vegeta about him remembering Beerus being involved in his childhood, however, Vegeta still does not remember until he is paralyzed by Beerus, which causes him to recall their last encounter involving his father, King Vegeta. Beerus asks Vegeta if he knows of the Super Saiyan God, which comes to Vegeta's surprise. Bulma comes and greets Beerus and Whis and invites them to her party. Beerus and Whis greet the other attendees of the party. Beerus is approached by Yamcha and conversed, and gave him a friendly smack at the back, much to Vegeta's worry, knowing Beerus' temperament. As Krillin shows up and presents Beerus Russian Octopus Balls, one is full of wasabi. After Beerus takes one, he becomes seemingly disgusted, to Vegeta's chagrin, but suddenly, he explodes in joy, Beerus enjoys the food, while describing its deliciousness.

Beerus still seeks out the Super Saiyan God, but Whis told him that most of the Saiyans are children and that Goku and Vegeta are the only pure-blooded Saiyans. Vegeta arrives and brings more Russian Octopus Balls even Beerus is getting full and annoyed. He asks Vegeta about his relationship with Goku and was told that he is his rival. Before eating a Russian Octopus Ball, Trunks strikes Beerus with water from his water gun, which greatly infuriates Beerus. Beerus threatens to blow up the Earth, but Vegeta calms him down by causing a scene: diving into the ocean and blasting an octopus and starts making more Octopus Balls. Beerus calms down and hears of pudding by Whis.

Beerus and Whis encounter Mr. Satan and Good Buu, who is eating pudding. Whis asks Majin Buu for pudding for both him and Beerus, but Majin Buu refuses. Beerus gets angry with Majin Buu and they begin to fight. Beerus attacks Majin Buu and blasts him into the ocean. Gotenks tries to help Buu but was easily beaten by Beerus by just getting tapped on the forearm. In the manga, Gotenks goes Super Saiyan 3 and was thrown into the ocean. Beerus was then challenged by Piccolo, Android 18, and Tien Shinhan. He dodges all of their attacks with ease and uses a Kiai to subdue them. Majin Buu gets back up and challenges Beerus again. Gohan charges up and attempts to help, but Beerus hits Majin Buu into Gohan. Beerus is lastly engaged by Super Saiyan Vegeta. Beerus merely paralyzes Vegeta and throws him to the ground. Beerus compares Vegeta's weakness to his father while he smashes his head to the deck of the ship. Beerus then gathers energy for a finger beam and was approached by Bulma, who slaps him. However, Beerus smiles at her, and he slaps Bulma back, angering Vegeta.

Beerus is challenged by Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta, who is able to hit Beerus. Vegeta takes the fight over an ocean and Beerus gets blasted with a Galick Gun. Beerus is not hurt by Vegeta's attack but told him that he hasn't used 10% of his power in a long time. Beerus then flicks Vegeta, making him fall to the ground. Beerus is ready to destroy the Earth but doesn't know if he should, due to the fact that Earth has pleasing food and wants to eat it. Bulma tells Beerus not to blow up the Earth and he gives them one chance to redeem themselves. Beerus scouts and then chooses Oolong for a game of rock-paper-scissors because he thinks he is the same race as Majin Buu.

Oolong is scared of challenging Beerus because the fate of the Earth is in his hands. Beerus declares that if he doesn't play, he'll destroy the Earth anyway. Beerus and Oolong play and they both tie the first to two times with scissors. Beerus thinks that Oolong is cheating, but Oolong says that he can't be if he didn't win. For the third time, Beerus wins using rock while Oolong uses scissors for the third time. Beerus gets excited and gets ready to destroy the Earth. Beerus creates an energy sphere and is ready to launch it, but Goku shows up and asks Beerus for time to bring the Super Saiyan God.

Goku summons Shenron using the Dragon Balls and asks if he knows of the Super Saiyan God. Goku also mentions Beerus, who scares Shenron. Beerus orders Shenron to summon the Super Saiyan God, but Shenron is unable to do so. Shenron, however, tells him how to make the form by doing a ritual using five righteous Saiyans flowing their energy into one other. When Shenron finishes, Beerus rushes the Saiyans to get started. After the first failed attempt by a miscalculation, Beerus wants to destroy the Earth but is told by Videl that there is a sixth Saiyan and she is pregnant. Gohan is excited and uses Videl in the ritual. After it doesn't work again, they start focusing their spirit into each other and it starts to work. While the ritual is close to finishing, Beerus sees the Super Saiyan God silhouette in resemblance to Goku. After Goku has transformed, Beerus applauds Goku and they are both excited to fight.

Who is Beerus?

Beerus is the God of Destruction for Universe 7 and was introduced to us in Dragon Ball Super. He is an extremely old and extremely powerful being who’s job is to bring balance to the universe by destroying planets.

While sleeping Beerus dreams about a Super Saiyan God, and so seeks Goku so he can fight a Super Saiyan God. After their initial battle, Beerus forms and friendship with Goku, Vegeta and Bulma, and becomes an uneasy ally of the Z fighters.

Even though Beerus says Gods shouldn’t get involved with the matters of mortals, he still finds ways to help the gang. Especially if Bulma presents him with earth delicacies such as Pizza or Ice Cream!

Fighting Style

Beerus is one of the most naturally powerful fighters in the Universe. He is also a user of Ultra Instinct, meaning he has a very relaxed and zen fighting style. He often sits back and counter-attacks his opponents after effortlessly dodging attacks. We only really see Beerus fighting for fun against significantly weaker opponents than himself, so we don’t know how he’d respond to a more powerful opponent.

When Beerus does want to end fights quickly, he can be very clinical, either knocking out opponents in single hits or using his God of Destruction powers to instantly obliterate his opponents. We haven’t seen him go toe-to-toe with an equal opponent who he can’t one hit, but Beerus seems to be an intelligent fighter, so we are sure he’d be able to use his brain as well as his brawn.

In terms of training, Beerus doesn’t seem to do it anymore. He spends a lot of his time either sleeping or eating, and we never actually see him train on screen. However, we know he must have trained to get so powerful and to learn Ultra Instinct. There is also God of Destruction training he’d have undergone to get the job, so once upon a time, Beerus must have trained rigorously at some point. But he is 200,000 years old, so he can probably go thousands of years without training and still retain a lot of his natural fighting ability.

Signature Moves

  • Sphere of Destruction

    - A terrifying slow moving Ki ball made of Destruction energy which is red and orange, and boils like the sun. It can be generated quickly by Beerus using his hand and is most commonly used to destroy planets.

    Sphere of Destruction
  • Hakai

    - The ultimate God of Destruction technique that erases the victim from existence. The user aims their palm at the victim and then says "Hakai" which erases the person particle by particle.

  • Air Normals: Decent air buttons, including a j.2H that's handy on offense and defense.
  • Setplay: Stifling pressure with sphere(s) of destruction, especially at the corner.
  • Orb Combos: High accumulation of damage by integrating cataclysmic orbs in combos.
  • Reversal: God of Destruction's Wrath is a DP, in a game where meterless reversals are few and far between.
  • Orbs: All his orbs, which are integral to his playstyle, are easily destroyed by universal mechanics and projectiles.
  • Ground Normals: Unorthodox ground buttons with severe flaws. They either lack range (5L, 5H, 2H) or the hurtboxes come out before the hitboxes (5L, 5M, 2M).
  • Meter Hog: Requires meter to gain access to his best moves, but is terrible at generating it.
  • Inconsistency: Combos with orbs can become inconsistent depending on the opponent's height, as the amount of orbs that connect will change and could drop.

Beerus

Beerus (ビルス), feared as the God of Destruction Beerus (破壊神ビルス), is the main antagonist in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.

Overview

Creation and Concept

Akira Toriyama's inspiration for the design came from an old Cornish Rex cat living with him (like Toriyama's previous cat was the inspiration for Korin). After the cat became seriously ill, the vet declared it did not have much longer to live, but the cat miraculously recovered and the vet joked that it might be some kind of demon.[1] Beerus' physical design also takes some inspiration from Ancient Egyptian deities,[2] notably Seth and Sekhmet. Seth is a humanoid with a jackal-like head who is the god of desert, storms, darkness, and chaos in ancient Egyptian culture. Sekhmet is a humanoid with a lioness head who is the Egyptian Goddess of Destruction, believed to cause diseases. In addition to sharing the same position as Sekhmet, Beerus is a felid like her, as he is an anthropomorphic cat.

Appearance and Personality

Beerus is a thin purple cat-like humanoid, with large pointed ears, similar to Cornish Rex and sphynx cats. He dons black, blue, and gold Egyptian-looking attire with the same white and orange diamond decorations as his ally Whis.

Beerus is powerful yet playful too (like most cats). He is also a gourmet, and his temple is stocked with fish and other food. While he is a fearsome god, his cat-like gestures and his variety of facial expressions seperate him from the more malevolent antagonists in the series.[4] However, Beerus is easily angered over trivial matters, such as being beaten in a game of Hide-and-Seek or being denied pudding. He is also fairly confident in his superior power, not without cause, as he proved to be one of the strongest opponents ever confronted by the Z Fighters.

Biography

Beerus pondering about the Super Saiyan transformation

Out of all the many gods in the universe, Beerus is the most feared.[5] He is feared even by Kais and Kaioshin. As a God of Destruction, he was once tasked with maintaining balance in the universe.[6] Beerus is the God of Destruction of the Seventh Universe, and his administrative zone includes planet Earth. He slumbers for several years to several decades straight, and he destroys planets of his administrative zone during the few years when he is awake.[1] This is because destruction is required in order to create new planets, but he does not act on Kaioshin's orders;[1] the God of Destruction destroys according to his own individual judgment. Also, because he is capricious, he destroys even important planets without a second thought. When he finds it bothersome, he lets someone else act as an agent of destruction. While he is awake, tense days for the Kaioshins continue, as nobody knows how many planets will be sacrificed.[1]

Beerus with the Oracle Fish

Beerus was trained in martial arts by Whis. One day, the God of Destruction Beerus stopped by King Kai's planet, which was larger at the time. He and King Kai played a video game together, a car racing one and Beerus lost, so the planet was destroyed by the peeved God of Destruction. King Kai then took a large leftover fragment, whittled it down to a sphere, and built a road on it so that he could have fun driving there. This became King Kai's current planet.[7] Another day, King Vegeta treated Beerus to a feast in his palace on Planet Vegeta and Beerus used the Saiyan King as a stepping stone while he was eating. Prince Vegeta, who is just a kid at that time, shockedly saw this and became mad, but remained silent.

Whis and Beerus meet Goku

39 years before the events of the movie, the Oracle Fish said to the God of Destruction that a strong opponent would appear before him, the Super Saiyan God. During the events of the film, alarm bombs explode, but Beerus still does not wake up. Whis tells him to get up and he says he will sing with a microphone if Beerus keeps sleeping. Since Whis is terrible at singing, Beerus eventually awakens from his long slumber and asks Whis whether the galactic overlord Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta during his nap, saying the Saiyans and Frieza were very evil and King Vegeta was stingy. Despite the fact that Planet Vegeta was destroyed two years before Beerus went to sleep, he was unaware of it until he was informed of it by Whis. Whis then tells Beerus that Frieza was defeated by "a Saiyan known as Goku or Kakarot," and uses his scepter like a projector to show the past battle between Goku and Frieza on Namek. Next, Beerus touches an egg and destroys it. When Whis explains about Super Saiyans and some Saiyans including Prince Vegeta living on Earth, Beerus recalls his dream about him fighting with the Super Saiyan God and he then calls the Oracle Fish. The Oracle Fish does not remember it, but Beerus is convinced that it said so. Since he heard rumors that a Saiyan defeated Frieza, Beerus tracks down this warrior, Goku, on King Kai's planet. When he arrives on the planet, the God of Destruction complains that King Kai's planet is so small, but Whis reminds him that he is the reason it is so small for destroying it when getting mad after losing at hide-and-seek. Beerus questions Goku about the Super Saiyan God and, after Goku demonstrates the various Super Saiyan forms he can achieve, Beerus accepts Goku's challenge to fight. Beerus blocks Super Saiyan 3 Goku's punch and flicks him on the head. Next, Beerus repeatedly blocks Goku's punch and defeats him with a Pressure Point Attack, making him unconscious and reverting him back to his base form. Disappointed by the subsequent lack of challenge, Beerus departs in order to see if the Saiyan Prince Vegeta and the other Saiyans on Earth know more about the Super Saiyan God.[8]

Beerus concentrates his kiwhile he is on Earth, producing a pink-colored aura

He arrives at Capsule Corporation, where Bulma's birthday party is held. The Saiyan Prince Vegeta seems to have met Beerus before,[9] and he musters all of his excitement and casts aside his pride to put the party's unannounced attendee in a good mood. Beerus asks Mr. Buu for one or two of the custard puddings he has, but Mr. Buu eats all of them, angering the God of Destruction,[10] who decides to destroy the Earth. Mr. Buu is blasted away into a lake by a Kiai from the God of Destruction. Android 18, Tien Shinhan, Piccolo attempt to fight Beerus and the God of Destruction easily defeats them one after another with some chopsticks.[9] While Beerus retrieves Buu back from the water, Gohan powers up and attacks Beerus only to have his head slammed into Buu's. Beerus also faces Gotenks and quickly defeats him as well. Vegeta decides to fight the God of Destruction on his own after the other Z Fighters have been defeated, but he is ultimately defeated. While Beerus is about to finish off Vegeta, Bulma walks up and scolds Beerus for ruining her birthday party, slapping him. The God of Destruction returns the favor right back and responds with a slap of his own, only his is much harder. Seeing his wife being beaten, Vegeta explodes in a fit of rage starts knocking Beerus around for a bit. Vegeta's anger gives him incredible power, but as soon as his rampage is over, Beerus is just fine and the Saiyan Prince once again accepts his and the planet's fate.

Beerus kicking Vegeta

Soon, Goku turns into a Super Saiyan God and faces Beerus again. They have a battle in space, right above planet Earth. The form gives Goku the power to resist Beerus, but he reverts back to his regular Super Saiyan form due to the form's time limit. However, he learns the form's godlike feeling, which allows him to use Super Saiyan God power against Beerus. Beerus points out to Goku that Super Saiyan God's time limit ran out some time ago and that Goku did not notice because he was able to absorb Super Saiyan God power into his body while he was fighting. Beerus says that because of this, Goku did not greatly power down even after returning to normal.

Beerus raises one hand towards Goku

The two seem to be equally strong at some point, but Beerus eventually wins when he uses his God of Destruction Super Energy Sphere. Goku stops Beerus' energy sphere, barely holding it back, and the screen suddenly blacks out. Chi-Chi and Goku's friends appear in Goku's mind, then he briefly transforms to Super Saiyan God again and absorbs the energy ball. Goku gets exhausted, and Beerus wants Goku to say "I give up" and he says so. Beerus stops the fight and they talk for a while before going back to the ground. Beerus says that the Super Saiyan God was not that strong and the Oracle Fish's prediction was a little exaggerated. Beerus reveals that Whis is his martial arts master and stronger than him. He also says that there are twelve universes, and the one Goku and his friends know is just one of them, the Seventh Universe. Beerus is the God of Destruction of the Seventh Universe, and each universe has its God of Destruction. On the ground, Beerus tries to destroy the planet, but he blasts only a small rock and says he has already run out of power. Whis asks Goku if he would like to be the next God of Destruction after Beerus dies, but Goku turns him down. From the Sacred World of the Kais, the Kaioshins comment on Goku befriending the God of Destruction. After they return home, Beerus tells Whis that both Goku and Vegeta might become formidable foes before long. While they are eating sushi, Beerus tries some of the wasabi, his head turns red and he starts destroying the moons around his temple. Then, Whis karate-chops Beerus to make him stop. Whis then orders Beerus to sleep for more 3 years.

Power

Beerus dominates Super Saiyan 3 Goku

His power surpasses that of all the main Dragon Ball Z villains: Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu.[11] Going further, V-Jump notes that Beerus is without a doubt the strongest being in the history of Z.[5] However, this is disproven in the film when Beerus reveals that his martial arts master, Whis, is stronger than him. He usually uses his power to destroy planets, and he is strong enough to destroy even an entire galaxy.[12] The overwhelming power of Beerus exceeds even that of Goku, who has surpassed several Super Saiyan levels;[1] Beerus completely dominates Super Saiyan 3 Goku in battle, rendering him unconscious with merely a chop to the neck.[5] He also takes down the fully-powered Gohan with a single kick to the abdomen, causes Gotenks to defuse, and dominates Super Saiyan Vegeta as well (until Vegeta gets mad, allowing him to put up a fight to Beerus, even making him spit out blood). Beerus' power is finally challenged by the appearance of Goku's Super Saiyan God power. The two seemed to be equally strong at some point, but Beerus eventually wins. However, it is said by Whis that during the fight with Goku after he became a Super Saiyan God, that Beerus used up 70% of his full power in the fight with Goku using 80%, and that he had not been that worked up in a long time. The God of Destruction's power is in another dimension altogether,[1] however, he is not as powerful as his martial arts master Whis.

Trivia

  • The scriptwriter Yūsuke Watanabe originally envisioned Beerus as a villainous character who infects people with evil and was the one who gave the Saiyan race their characteristic ruthlessness.[13] Also, Beerus originally looked like a lizard, but Toriyama changed his design entirely.[14]
  • In accordance to the original concept for this character, his name in Japanese, Birusu (ビルス), is a pun on "virus" (ビールス; German pronunciation).[15]
  • Beerus was going to fight the Z Fighters with a spoon or fork, but the Battle of Gods animation director Tadayoshi Yamamuro thought it would be hard for him to fight like that, so he suggested switching it to chopsticks.[14]

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Japanese: ドラゴンボールZ 神と神, Hepburn: Doragon Bōru Zetto: Kami to Kami, lit. "Dragon Ball Z: God and God") is a 2013 Japanese animatedscience fantasymartial arts film, the eighteenth feature film based on the Dragon Ball series, and the fourteenth to carry the Dragon Ball Z branding, released in theaters on March 30. It was the first Dragon Ball movie in 17 years to have a theatrical release, the last being the tenth anniversary movie in 1996, and the first to use digital ink and paint, which followed the first three Dragon Ball films and the thirteen Dragon Ball Z films. Unlike previous theatrical Dragon Ball releases, this was a full feature-length production with a stand-alone release and not shown as part of the now-discontinued Toei Anime Fair (formerly the Toei Manga Matsuri).

It was the first-ever Japanese film to be screened at IMAX Digital Theaters, and was released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 13, 2013. Funimation acquired the North American rights to Battle of Gods and produced an English dub that they co-released with 20th Century Fox in North American cinemas in August 2014. Madman Entertainment acquired the Australasian rights and screened the movie at the 2013 Japanese Film Festival in Australia before screening the English dub to select theaters in August 2014. Manga Entertainment released the film in the United Kingdom in November 2014.

Battle of Gods was the first film considered an official part of the Dragon Ball storyline, being set during the time skip in chapter 517 of the original manga, with original creator Akira Toriyama deeply involved.[2] The plot involves Beerus, the God of Destruction, learning of the defeat of the galactic overlord Frieza at the hands of Goku. Seeking an opponent worthy of his power, Beerus, along with his companion Whis, travels to the North Galaxy to challenge Goku to a battle.[3]

A sequel, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, was released in Japan on April 18, 2015, while Battle of Gods was adapted into the first story arc of Dragon Ball Super, which expanded upon the movie's plot.

Plot[edit]

Beerus, the God of Destruction, is woken from a lengthy slumber by his attendant Whis. While reviewing the current state of the universe, he is surprised to learn that Frieza was defeated by a Saiyan named Goku. He recalls that thirty-nine years prior, the Oracle Fish foretold that a mighty opponent would appear before Beerus called the Super Saiyan God. Intrigued by the potential challenge, Beerus then tracks Goku to King Kai's planet. Goku excitedly challenges Beerus to a fight and despite powering up to Super Saiyan 3, is effortlessly defeated. Disappointed, Beerus departs in order to seek out the other Saiyans.

On Earth, Bulma's birthday party is interrupted by Beerus' arrival. Vegeta, aware of the might of the God of Destruction, casts his pride aside in order to appease him, who along with Whis, soon both develop a curiosity for Earth's cuisine. While the party is ongoing, the Pilaf Gang attempts (and fails) to infiltrate the party to steal the magical Dragon Balls, and accidentally shoots Videl while making a scene. While Dende is healing her, he learns that Videl is pregnant with Gohan's child. As the celebration continues, Beerus is soon provoked by Mr. Buu who refuses to share any pudding. Beerus attacks Buu and decides to destroy the Earth when Android 18, Tien Shinhan, Piccolo, and Gohan attempt to fight Beerus but are all swiftly defeated. Vegeta reluctantly tries his hand at fighting Beerus as does Goten and Trunks, who fuse into Gotenks, but they both are beaten as well. Bulma becomes upset at the fighting ruining her party and scolds Beerus before slapping him. When Beerus hits her back, Vegeta is sent into fit of rage and despite faring the best in combat against Beerus of anyone thus far, is still defeated.

As Beerus prepares to obliterates the planet, Goku arrives and asks Beerus for more time to learn about the Super Saiyan God. Using the Dragon Balls, he summons Shenron and the eternal dragon reveals that they need the power of six pure-hearted Saiyans for one of them to reach the form. Thanks to the power of himself, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, Goten, and Videl's unborn child channeling their energy together, Goku ascends to the level of Super Saiyan God. He confronts Beerus and they engage in an intense battle. The form gives Goku the power to resist Beerus, but he reverts to his regular Super Saiyan form due to its apparent time limit. However, he acquires the form's godlike feeling which allows him to retain some of the power in his fight against Beerus who eventually decides to use a massive energy attack to truly put Goku to the test. Goku struggles to stop the energy sphere but after he laments on the potential deaths of his loved ones, he is able to absorb the attack and briefly transform into a Super Saiyan God once again. However, Goku is overwhelmed with exhaustion, and at Beerus' suggestion, finally admits defeat. He recognizes Goku's effort and reveals that he was the second strongest person he had ever fought, after Whis, who is also his martial arts master and is even stronger than he is. Goku also learns that there are other universes with other Gods of Destruction as well. Beerus decides to spare the Earth by only destroying a small rock (thus technically keeping his word), and he and Whis bid farewell as they depart back to their home world.

Voice cast[edit]

Development and production[edit]

Early in July 2012, Weekly Shōnen Jump's official website had already opened a teaser page with a countdown to a "surprise" on Saturday, July 14, the release date of its 33rd issue of the year. On July 14, the magazine and website, now changed to show Shenlong appearing and then disappearing, revealed some minor information of the upcoming film; including the premiere date, staff information, and companies involved in the production (Fox International Productions Japan, Shueisha, Fuji TV, Toei Animation, Bandai, Bandai Namco Games, and Bird Studio). The film's director is Masahiro Hosoda, who directed several Dragon Ball Z episodes back in 1992, the screenplay was written by Yūsuke Watanabe, who has written manga adaptations before (namely the 20th Century Boys and Gantz live-action films), and the lead animation director is Tadayoshi Yamamuro, who has worked on the series since the Dragon Ball anime.[4]

The magazine and official website also published a comment by Akira Toriyama about the movie. The Dragon Ball series creator notes that the adaptation will mark the first time he has been so deeply involved in the production of an anime, in this case as early as the screenwriting stages. Toriyama also said that the film will retain the atmosphere of the original while adding small amounts of modern flavor.[4]Toei Animation released a press statement on July 17, 2012, saying it would be set "between the animation series Z and GT, or in other words from the blank decade between the end of the battle with Majin Buu in chapter 517 of the manga and chapter 518" and calling it part of "the official history of Dragon Ball."[5]

In September, it was announced that the film was one of four that year, and the only animated one, to receive money from the Japanese government as part of the non-profit organization UNIJAPAN's "Co-production Certification Program".[6][7] Toei received 50 million yen (roughly US$636,000) from the Agency for Cultural Affairs, whose aim is to promote Japanese arts and culture, with the United States named as the film's partner country.[6][7]

This time in particular, we had a request from sensei to leave in not only the action, but also some truly enjoyable... the truly enjoyable aspects of Dragon Ball; Dragon Ball's chaotic feeling, and the action of Gohan's battles and of the Z Fighters are mixed together very well, so I believe that has also helped make it an enjoyable movie.

— Gyarmath Bogdan, MAG Net, NHK, March 1, 2013[citation needed]

The December issue of Ultra Jump elaborated on Toriyama's involvement in the movie, stating he came up with the movie's story and character designs.[8] On December 2, the official website was updated with the movies' cast and entire staff.[3] The following day, a brief introduction to the film's story was leaked from accessing an unlinked section of the website.[3]

In January 2013, it was announced that Olympic gold medalist in judoKaori Matsumoto and singer/tarentoShoko Nakagawa will have roles in the film.[9] Nakagawa is a well-known otaku and Matsumoto is a fan of the series as well.[9] Matsumoto voices a policewoman modeled after herself, while Nakagawa plays the Yogen-gyo (予言魚) who first leads Beerus to Goku.[9] The Fuji TV announcer Shin-ichi Karube also has a small part in the movie.

The April issue of V Jump teased about a new Super Saiyan transformation being in the film, titled "Super Saiyan God" (超サイヤ人ゴッド, Sūpā Saiya-jin Goddo), saying: 39 years ago, the Oracle Fish told Beerus that the Super Saiyan God would appear before him. And that this is the beginning of the movie's story.[10] In Weekly Shōnen Jump issue #14 of 2013, Toriyama said that the plot for Battle of Gods began two years ago with ideas for the God of Destruction and Super Saiyan God, and that he got deeply involved in the story in order to keep it in-line with the series' original tone so kids could enjoy it.[11] In the following week's issue, he revealed that Beerus' design is based on a cat and his clothes based on Egyptian garments.[12]

A live greeting by cast members and Toriyama, followed by a preview screening of the film took place across Japan on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, with a limited number of attendees determined from a Jump lottery. The lottery tickets were included in 22 different Shueisha magazines (including Weekly Shōnen Jump, V Jump, Jump SQ, and Ultra Jump) and 884 pairs (1768 people) were invited. There were five screenings, all the same day and at 6:30 p.m: Shinjuku Wald 9 cinema in Tokyo (428 people), Umeda Burg 7 theater in Osaka (440 people), 109 Cinemas in Nagoya (256 people), T-Joy Hakata in Fukuoka (322 people), and Sapporo Cinema Frontier in Sapporo (322 people).[13] The special cast greeting at the Tokyo venue was beamed live to the other locations before the screening.[14] A second preview screening with an on-stage greeting and a special guest took place at Differ Ariake Arena on March 16, 2013, with 250 pairs (500 people) invited (determined with lottery tickets included in V Jump, Weekly Shōnen Jump, and Saikyō Jump).[14]

Music[edit]

The music in Battle of Gods was composed by Norihito Sumitomo. Its theme song is a cover of Hironobu Kageyama's "Cha-La Head-Cha-La", the original opening theme of Dragon Ball Z, by the rock band Flow.[15] The band members commented that they were excited about the opportunity as they have been fans of the series since they were in elementary school.[15] The cover and the film's insert song, "Hero ~Song of Hope~" (HERO~希望の歌~, Hīro ~Kibō no Uta~), were released as a double A-side single on March 20, 2013.[16] It reached number 24 on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart.[17] The film's original soundtrack, containing 43 tracks, was released on March 27, 2013.[18] Due to licensing agreements, the international editions of the film use English-language versions of Flow's "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" and "Hero ~Song of Hope~".

The music to the trailers in Japan was composed by Immediate Music whom specialize in providing trailer music for films, such as Avatar, the Matrix films and the Harry Potter films.[19] The trailers use the pieces "Prologue to Conquest" (Trailerhead: NU EPIQ) and "Emergence of Empires" (Trailerhead: Saga), both composed by Yoav Goren with the latter based on "Conquest of Kingdoms" from Epic Choral Action #1 and "Rising Empires" from Themes for Orchestra & Choir 2: Abbey Road respectively. Pfeifer Broz. Music supplied "Evil Island" for Funimation's promotions and trailers in North America.

The July 14, 2012 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump published the first promotional images for the film; featuring Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Kuririn, Goten, Trunks, Vegeta, and Shenlong, with the tagline "The mightiest make their move" (最強、始動, Saikyō, Shidō), followed by "All humanity has been waiting. For excitement like none before..." (全人類待望。かつてない興奮へー, Zen jinrui taibō. Katsute nai kōfun e).[4][20] On July 21, 2012, a short teaser trailer announcing the film was shown at the Saikyō V Jump Festa, and later that month shown on television.[21] The teaser trailer was added to the movie's official website in August 2012. In less than a week the video was viewed over 3.5 million times.[22]

With the movie title revealed in November 2012, a special pre-sale collaboration ticket with the One Piece Film: Z movie was made to commemorate the release of the two films. The dual-ticket good for both films has a special new illustration by both Eiichirō Oda (author of One Piece) and Akira Toriyama.[23] Limited to 8,989 across Japan, the tickets went on sale on November 23, 2012, for ¥2,600 (US$31.51) apiece.[23] The film's poster and two new characters' names and voice actors were officially revealed in December 2012 in Weekly Shōnen Jump's first issue of 2013; Beerus, the God of Destruction voiced by Kōichi Yamadera and the mysterious Whis voiced by Masakazu Morita.[24] The film poster displays Super Saiyan Goku combating the God of Destruction Beerus, with Whis floating showered in light in the background.[24] Various other characters from the series are also featured on the poster (Mr. Satan, Mr. Buu, Videl, the shrunken Pilaf gang, Super Saiyan Goten, Super Saiyan Gohan, Super Saiyan Vegeta, Super Saiyan Trunks, Bulma, Piccolo, Tenshinhan, Kuririn, Yamcha and Puar).[24]

The first full trailer for the film was aired on Fuji TV on December 7, 2012, during the morning show Mezamashi TV.[25] A 30-minute Battle of Gods discussion panel was held at Jump Festa 2013; on the Jump Super Stage, on December 22, 2012. Along with the voice actors Masako Nozawa, Mayumi Tanaka, Toshio Furukawa, the film director Masahiro Hosoda, V Jump editor-in-chief Akio Iyoku, and Toei Animation producer Gyarmath Bogdan took part at the discussion which was overseen by former YBS TV announcer Mariko Nakagomi. The second full trailer for the film began being streamed on Cinema Today's website on February 27, 2013.[26] In late March 2013, Cinema Today's website began streaming a TV ad for the movie that features Frieza (Ryūsei Nakao) and Cell (Norio Wakamoto); Cell questions why he isn't in the film and Frieza brags that he is, Cell then remarks that Frieza only has a non-speaking appearance.[27]

Collaborations[edit]

During the 30th Prize Fair, which took place in Tokyo on November 7, 2012, Bandai showcased some of their new Dragon Ball figures for winter 2012, as well their World Collectable Figure line produced in conjunction with the 2013 movie. The latter is a set of eight figures around 7 cm tall that covers characters that appear in the movie; along with Vegeta and Super Saiyan 3 Goku, the three members of the Pilaf gang were among the figures revealed.

In February 2013, several collaborative projects between Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and KFC in Japan began. On the seventh, the restaurants began selling "Smile Sets with Strongest Battle Goods — Parents and Kids Play Together!", which came with Dragon Ball Z games such as reversi and playing cards.[28] On the fifteenth, the KFC restaurants in Sapporo, Sendai, Ebisu, Sakae, Osaka, Hakata and Okinawa dressed their Colonel Sanders statues as Goku, with each one holding a different starred Dragon Ball.[29] They began selling "Strongest Sets" that come with "Light Up! Dragon Bottles" or "Dream Dragon Radar detectors" on February 28, and a TV ad featuring Goku began airing.[29][30]

As part of a collaboration with the Japanese J. League Division 1 football team Albirex Niigata, a special poster unveiled on the official Battle of Gods website on February 20, 2013, was displayed across Niigata Prefecture in promotion of their match with the defending league Division 1 champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima on March 3, 2013.[31] The poster is based on the Battle of Gods poster, with the movie characters replaced by the football team's players: the figure in the background replacing Whis is the team's manager Masaaki Yanagishita, Beerus has been replaced by the Sanfrecce Hiroshima goalkeeper Shūsaku Nishikawa, and Goku is replaced by the team's forward Bruno Lopes. All supporters at the match wore orange, Goku made an "appearance" at the stadium, and the Dragon Ball Z theme song was used.

From March 5 to April 8 the Lawson convenience stores sold special Battle of Gods inspired food items, such as Dragon Ball pizza balls, Super Saiyan fries, Demon King Piccolo's Green Tea Cream Puffs, Majin Buu Milk Pudding and Vegeta's Green Salad.[32]

Tie-ins with other media[edit]

The March 2013 issue of V Jump revealed that Beerus would appear in the Dragon Ball Heroes arcade game as a boss battle,[14] and subsequently in its Nintendo 3DS version titled Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission. It also announced the Dragon Ball Z Festival at Toei Kyoto Studio Park from March 16 to September 8 in celebration of Battle of the Gods.[14] Starting on March 30, Beerus appeared in the Dragon Ball arcade game Zenkai Battle Royale. Beerus, Whis, and Goku's Super Saiyan God form are all playable characters in the video game Battle of Z.[33]

A manga adaptation of Battle of Gods ran in the April 2013 issue of Saikyō Jump, which went on sale on March 4, 2013.[34] Drawn by Naho Ōishi, who currently draws the Dragon Ball SD series in the magazine and previously Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock in V Jump, it depicts the beginning of the film. An anime comic version, more commonly known as "ani-manga" in the west, of Battle of Gods was released on October 4, 2013.[35]

Battle of Gods received its television debut on Fuji TV on March 22, 2014, at 9:00pm.[36] Toei Animation producer Gyarmath Bogdan confirmed through Twitter that the broadcast included up to twenty minutes of extra scenes and additional footage.[37] The broadcast earned an average household rating of 13.1%.[38]

The 2015 Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' film is a sequel to Battle of Gods and features Beerus and Whis.[39]

The first story arc of Dragon Ball Super is a retelling of sorts of Battle of Gods, though some events are altered or expanded in the series' version of events. The "Battle of Gods" arc covers episodes 1-14.

Release and reception[edit]

Battle of Gods is the first-ever Japanese film to be screened at IMAX Digital Theaters, screening at all 16 IMAX Digital Theater locations across Japan.[40][41] However, it was not shown in 3D.[42]

Madman Entertainment announced they had acquired the Australasian rights to the film and screened the movie at the 2013 Japanese Film Festival in Australia from October to December.[43] On May 30, 2014, Funimation announced that they had acquired the North American rights to the movie and gave the film a limited theatrical run in North America from August 5–7 and 9, 2014.[44] Funimation held a red carpet premiere for Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods in Los Angeles on July 3. The 8:00 p.m. red carpet and 9:00 p.m. screening was at the Regal LA Live Stadium 14 Theaters.[45] Madman screened Funimation's dub at a handful of Australasian theaters on August 30, 2014.[46]Manga Entertainment, the United Kingdom's distributor of the series, announced at the MCM Manchester Comic Con that they licensed the film and would give it a limited theatrical release, including an appearance at the 2014 Scotland Loves Anime convention.[47]

In Latin America, the movie was released by Diamond Films during the last days of September and first days of October 2013 (depending on the country) with almost every member of the original cast from the Mexican Spanish dub of the series. In Brazil, Battle of Gods was released by Diamond Filmes on October 11, 2013, with the original cast from the Brazilian Portuguese Dragon Ball Z dub.[48] In Italy the movie entered theaters on February 1, 2014.

In Spain, the movie was released in theaters on May 30, 2014, in Castilian Spanish, Catalan and Basque languages, with the former bringing back almost every member of the original cast from the Castilian Spanish Dragon Ball Z dub while the latter two feature the respective Catalan and Basque voice casts from Dragon Ball Kai (the Catalan voice cast also being essentially the same one from Dragon Ball Z). The extended version home release also featured a Valencian dub with almost every member of the original cast from the Valencian Dragon Ball Z dub.

In Philippines, the movie was released subtitled in English by Pioneer Films during the month of April 2013, making it the second Dragon Ball film to be shown in the country. The Filipino dub of the movie was released on January 4, 2015, by ABS-CBN TV Network.

Box office[edit]

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods opened at number one in the Japanese box office, earning US$7,307,760 with 561,098 tickets sold in its first two days.[49][50] The movie's showings at all 16 of the IMAX Digital theaters in Japan that weekend earned US$450,000, with an average of US$28,000 per screen.[51] It was ranked number five in the overseas box office chart by Variety, making it the top-grossing non-American film on the chart.[51][52] While the top four films are playing in over 50 territories each, Battle of Gods' performance is based only on 328 screens in Japan.[52] By its fifth day, the film had made over US$12,000,000 with 988,790 tickets sold.[53] As a result, the film was projected to sell more than 1 million tickets by its sixth day, making it the fastest film to reach that milestone so far that year in Japan.[53] It was number one in its second week as well, with a total of 1,488,518 tickets sold and an estimated US$19,017,008 total earnings.[54][55] The film was number one for a third week, raising its total to US$23,618,327 with 1,823,141 tickets sold, making it the fastest-grossing film of 2013 in Japan.[56][57] It dropped to fourth place the subsequent weekend of April 20–21, but total tickets sold passed the two million mark and its total revenue climbed to US$26,419,641.[58][59] The film dropped to eighth during Golden Week, which is when many new movies open in theaters and is the film industry's best week in Japan, while the box office gross grew to US$28,162,444 and tickets reached 2,181,328.[60][61] The following week it held on to the eighth place, with tickets sold increasing to 2,346,726 and its gross to US$29,172,291.[62][63]

Toei aimed for Battle of Gods to earn a domestic Japanese box office take of ¥3 billion ($32 million).[64] In December 2013, Oricon listed Battle of Gods as the Japanese box office's eleventh highest-grossing film of the year earning a box office take of ¥3 billion.[65] The film earned $2.8 million in North American theaters in 8 days,[66] placing it eleventh on a list of the highest-grossing theatrically released anime in North America of all time according to Box Office Mojo. The film grossed $17,961,356 in other regions, including $15,587,504 in Latin America,[67] the film's most successful overseas region.[68]

Critical reception[edit]

The review aggregatorRotten Tomatoes reported that 88% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 8 reviews, with an average rating of 6.50/10.[69] Richard Eisenbeis writing for Kotaku called the film "a great nostalgic trip from beginning to end."[70] He noted that it was focused on lighthearted moments, but that the "comedic moments were not only funny but also true to the series, and the fight scenes were excellent one and all."[70] He particularly praised the animation as the best of the series, due to technological advancements since the early 1990s, and declared that the highlight of the movie was how in the end the villain was undoubtedly the winner over Goku in a "complete reversal of the standard DBZ formula".[70]Otaku USA's Matt Schley agreed that it is a comedy heavy film "more reminiscent of the original Dragon Ball than Z".[71] He speculates that the viewer's enjoyment of the movie depends on what they expect; "If you want epic Dragon Ball Z story worthy of the title Battle of Gods, this film may disappoint. But if you're just happy to see your favorite characters performing a few animated hijinx again after all these years, this film certainly delivers."[71]

Leah B. Jackson of IGN gave the English dub of the movie a 7.5 out of 10, praising the animation and fight scenes, particularly the final battle. She was pleased to see Funimation's voice actors return, but criticized the movie for the lack of iconic techniques and having too much "filler".[72] Theron Martin of Anime News Network (ANN) praised the movie for its humor, use of main and supporting cast, the introduction of Beerus and Whis and the overall light-hearted nature and plot. But also criticized the movie for its inconsistent animation, uninspiring fight scenes and use of CGI, stating, "Ultimately Battle of Gods is entirely a movie for long-established fans, as it has too many in-jokes that those not familiar with wide swaths of the franchise would get. It is not a stellar addition to the franchise but is a worthwhile and at least moderately entertaining one, provided that one does not go into it expecting an action magnum opus."[73] Kyle Mills Of DVD Talk highly recommended the movie, praising the dub and the perfect balancing of the humor elements from the first Dragon Ball anime with the action elements of Dragon Ball Z. He finished with, "Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods is one hell of a fun flick. For any fan of the Dragon Ball franchise, you need to check it out.[...] [It is] a film full of nostalgia, fun characters, legitimate laugh out loud moments, and slick action sequences. It's a film that showcases perfectly why the Dragon Ball franchise has such long lasting popularity."[74]

Home media[edit]

The film was released in Japan in standard and limited edition Blu-ray and DVD formats on September 13, 2013.[75] In addition to the design material and trailer collections included in the regular edition, the limited edition includes behind the scenes footage, interviews, and the 2008 short film Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!, as well as a figure, booklet, and special postcards. The home video release of Battle of Gods sold approximately 50,381 copies in its first week.[76][77] By the end of the year, it had sold 33,737 Blu-rays and 46,761 DVDs.[78][79][80] The extended TV version of the film was released on Blu-ray and DVD on March 13, 2015,[81] selling approximately 1,666 copies in its first week.[82][83]

Funimation released the theatrical and extended TV versions in North America on Blu-ray and DVD on October 7, 2014.[84] A similar set was released in the United Kingdom by Manga Entertainment on November 10, 2014.[85] Madman Entertainment released the film in Australia and New Zealand on Blu-ray and DVD on November 26, 2014.
