Porting landline to verizon wireless

Verizon: How to Forward or Transfer a Landline Number to a Cell Phone

Call forwarding, or transferring your landline number to a cell phone, can be a convenient and cheaper way to receive calls to your home phone wherever you are.

As a customer of Verizon, there are three ways to set up call forwarding without losing your number:

  • Keep your landline phone, and forward calls from your landline to a cell phone
  • Get rid of your landline phone, and forward calls from your landline number to a cell phone
  • Transfer your landline number to a cell phone

With the first option, you’ll keep your landline and hence, the relationship with Verizon.

However, the second two options allow you to cancel your landline contract, keep your number, and save money.

Additionally, forwarding calls with Verizon can be expensive, complicated, and time-consuming.

You can continue to make and receive calls from your landline number while significantly reducing your monthly bill with Community Phone's landline transferring service.

To see if your landline number is eligible for this service, simply fill in the form below. Or, if you want us - an alternative nationwide landline carrier - to do all the work for you, you can reach us by phone at 866-512-6261.

Otherwise, keep reading to find out how you can set up Verizon call forwarding: we've made things a bit easier for you by collecting all of this information — some of which cannot be found on Verizon's website — in one place.

Keep The Landline Phone and Forward Calls To A Cell Phone

The first option will let you forward all incoming calls or selective incoming calls from your current landline number to an alternate phone (a cell phone, a work phone, etc.).

By choosing this option, you will continue to maintain your landline number and your contract with Verizon. While this may seem convenient, however, it has some drawbacks.

First, setting up call forwarding can have an additional cost, beyond the already expensive landline plan.

Depending on the type of account you have with Verizon, call forwarding features may cost an additional $12.99 to your current phone bill.

In comparison, Community Phone’s plan will give you all the same calling features for only $12 a month in total, and our free internet and TV referral service will provide you with the most affordable, highest quality internet and TV options in your area.

Community Phone allows you to cut the cord on Verizon while continuing to make and receive calls from your landline number.

Call Community Phone at 866-512-6261 to learn more.

How to set up call forwarding with Verizon

When setting up Option 1, you can either call Verizon Customer Service, or you can do it yourself by following the detailed instructions in this article.

Call Verizon Customer Service

In order to set up call forwarding through customer service, you will need your Account number and Account or Number Transfer PIN.

You’ll find your Account number on the top right corner of your bill (as displayed in the picture below). If you cannot find your bill, you can find this information by signing into your My Verizon account here.

Your PIN will be a 4-digit number that verifies your identity when you call Verizon to talk about your account. This number would have been given to you by Verizon when you first set up your service.

If, however, you do not remember your PIN you will need to reset the PIN online in My Verizon. To reset your account PIN, go to the "Change Account PIN" page, sign in to your My Verizon account, enter a new PIN, then re-type the new account PIN in the designated box and then click submit to confirm.

How to Activate Call Forwarding With Verizon

You can activate or deactivate Verizon call forwarding on traditional home phones by inputting the following codes:

To forward All Calls Immediately:

  1. Lift your telephone’s receiver, and press *72, or rotary dial 1.1.7.2
  2. When you hear two short tones, enter the ten-digit number you want your calls forwarded to.
  3. Once the call is answered, Verizon call forwarding will be activated.

To deactivate, dial *73 or rotary dial 1.1.7.3. You will hear 2 short tones that indicate you have turned off call forwarding

To forward calls when there is no answer, or the line is busy, dial *90 and follow instructions. To deactivate dial *91 and follow instructions.

Drawbacks to Verizon Call Forwarding

Now that we have detailed the how tos of Verizon’s call forwarding system, let’s discuss the common issues that arise when setting up call forwarding with Verizon.

Call Blocking Services

Many people are reluctant to forward calls, worried that their cell phones will be bombarded with the telemarketers and robocalls they get on their landline.

Verizon offers free spam and robocall protection to you when you set up call forwarding on your phone, via a free call filter service called Nomorobo.

Nomorobo lets their customers get alerts when a call is likely spam, report unsolicited numbers, and automatically block robocalls based on their preferred level of risk.

Verizon also offers Call Filter Plus which is a paid service, $2.99/month/line or $7.99/month/account (3 lines or more). This version allows you to:

  • See the caller’s name for unknown numbers
  • Create a custom block list so that calls from unwanted, specific numbers are automatically forwarded to voicemail
  • Create a custom spam list
  • View the risk-level of incoming calls
  • Use spam lookup to search the spam database to see if a number has already been identified as spam.

Steep Prices

There are financial drawbacks to buying Verizon's service. Verizon offers a basic home phone plan for $35 which includes one landline number.

However, features like Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Blocking, Call Forwarding, Voicemail, Conference Calling and Privacy Control may or may not be included, depending on your plan and which area you live in.

Retaining Call Forwarding

If, at any point you wish to cancel your landline service with Verizon, you will no longer retain your call forwarding feature. It is a feature offered in association with your basic home phone plan and cannot be used separately. Simply put, no landline - no call forwarding.

Forward All Calls to an Existing Cell Phone & Cut the Cord

This option is not available through Verizon.

Through Community Phone, you can forward all incoming calls from your landline to your existing cell phone while discontinuing your landline service.

Once call forwarding has been safely and effectively set up (which will NOT affect the calls you are already receiving on your cell phone), we will help you end your current landline subscription.

With this option, you will safeguard your contacts, save yourself from the need of learning a new number, and reduce your monthly phone bill, all the while keeping the number you are comfortable with.

Transfer Your Landline Number A Cell Phone

Transferring your landline to a cell phone allows you to move your current landline number to a cell phone.

If you want to transfer your existing landline number to a new phone/cell phone, and then end your landline subscription, Community Phone can handle the entire process for you. The transfer plan will cost you only $20.00/month, or $29.00/month with a cell phone included.

Although options 2 and 3 may appear similar (in that you cut the cord in both), they are quite different.

Through option 2, you already own an existing cell phone number that you would like incoming calls from your landline forwarded to.

With option 3, you can use your current landline number as a new cell phone number. The added benefit of option 3 is you get to keep all your contacts, but you don’t need to remember multiple numbers.

If you have a cell phone you are familiar and comfortable with, forwarding your calls with option 2 makes the most sense.

If you want your landline number on a cell phone and don’t have a cell phone, Option 3 is the way to go. Both of these Community Phone options will be much cheaper and easier than maintaining your current subscription with Verizon.

For both options 2 & 3, you can call us at 1-888-582-4177, or email us at [email protected] and we will handle the entire process for you. All you need to do is:

  1. Input your number here https://communityphone.org/pages/landline-transfer and see if your existing landline number is eligible for the Forwarding or Transferring processes.
  2. If your number is eligible, you can apply for a Transfer or Forward plan.

You can check our Transfer or Forward plans here.

Question about Porting a number from Verizon Landline to Republic Wireless

Thanks Roland,

Thanks for your response.

Last night it was already late so I just went to bed and leff the computer on without further interacting with that webpage with the error message on the bottom left corner. When I woke up today that page had changed to another message that my account was logged out due to inactivity. When I check my account today, there’s a message next to that phone line that my Number Transfer has been accepted and says it’s supposed to happen at 11:30am on December 2nd (I assume that’s East Coast Time).

So for right now everything seems to be working. I’ll just keep my finders crossed until Monday :crossed_fingers:

This service line is used by my inlaws and I do want to keep the 1.0 plan on this line, but the special handling in the my other thread is only necessary if they want to keep their current RW number by porting it to Google Voice before porting their landline number to RW, and it turns out that they don’t care about losing the current RW number so I’m not going to go through all the extra hassle to save it for them.

Thanks again.

Give us a call: It's that simple! Give us a call at 1-800-937-8997, and let us know that you're ready to make the switch! For Prepaid, call 1-877-778-2106.
Go to a store: You can also go into one of our stores and get some face-time with one of our Mobile Experts. If you have a prepaid account that you'd like to transfer, come to one of our stores to begin the process.
Do it online: Rather begin your transfer online? Of course you can. Follow the number transfer instructions on the payment page at checkout. We recommend this method if you don't need to use you current phone until your new T-Mobile phone or SIM card arrives.
  4. Now you can start the transition to your new T-Mobile account. To transition smoothly, keep your old phone and old account active until your number is fully activated on your new T-Mobile account.
  5. To make sure you don't miss any important calls or texts, your best bet is to wait to transfer your number until after you get your new device and SIM card.
  6. We'll handle the heavy lifting from here...

What happens next?

Number transfer timelines and expectations

How long does it take?

A single line, wireless or landline, typically takes two business days or less, but can take up to 10 business days.

Multiple lines may take up to 10 days, but most multi-line requests are completed within six calendar days.

No one likes retyping their contacts

You definitely don't want to lose any important information. We recommend backing up your contacts, voicemail, and text messages before transferring your number to T-Mobile.

Dual service

No, you haven't fallen into a parallel universe, you're just experiencing Dual Service. This is a period of up to 24 hours where service may be active on both phones. If you have to call 911 during this time, stay on the line. 911 may not be able to call you back.

Let the games begin!

You'll get a text message from T-Mobile to let you know the porting process has started. Don't cancel service for your old phone yet! Once you get a confirmation message from T-Mobile that the transfer is complete, cancel your service with your previous carrier. If you have any questions or experience any problems, we'd be happy to help!

Check port status

To check the status of your port request, contact a specialist at 1-877-789-3106. We'll look up your request, and give you any updates.

Transfer to another carrier

If you need help with your account or device, we're here to help. If you still want to transfer your number, contact the other carrier to start the port-out process.

Verizon porting landline wireless to

Porting to Verizon Wireless

Posted By: Edward Mance

Porting a phone number to Verizon Wireless is the process of moving the number from the current carrier (losing carrier) to Verizon Wireless (winning carrier). This is not the same thing as call forwarding – where an inbound call is simply forwarded to a different number. With porting, the number becomes part of the winning carrier’s network. Note that the porting of a phone number to Verizon’s landline service is different. For that, please refer to the Porting to Verizon’s Landline Service article.

IT’S SIMPLE

  • Porting a phone number to a wireless carrier such as Verizon Wireless is the simples of all port types.
  • It requires no paperwork to be submitted as part of the port request.
  • And it takes the lease amount of time – approximately 3 business days.

SUMMARY:

  • Gather current account information for where the new number is right now.
  • Submit that information to Verizon Wireless. They will submit it to the losing carrier.
  • Wait 3 approximately 3 business days for the number to start working automatically.
  • Reprogram outbound caller ID on your wireless phone handset using your new number.

GATHER INFORMATION

  • Carrier currently holding the number
  • Account number
  • Account PIN (not the voicemail pin)
  • Name on account
  • Address on account, including zip code
  • Tax ID on the account – only necessary for an ATT Mobility port; T-Mobile does not ask for it.

Normally only the account number and pin will be required. But, once in in a while the Verizon Wireless rep may ask for the other details mentioned above.

You do not need to bring in any documentation. Just the information is sufficient.

REPLACING AN EXISTING PHONE NUMBER

This is possible. When you get your Verizon Wireless representative in person, tell them you want to port “over top of” your existing number, replacing it with the new one.

When you get your Verizon Wireless representative in person, tell them you want to port your new number “over top of” of your existing number, thereby replacing it with the new one.

If you are going to do it over the phone, it is important that you call from a different phone than the one you want to port the number over top of, because at the end of the port submission, they are going to have you program the phone (it’s simple), and that requires the phone to be shut off and turned back on to complete. If you do not have another phone, you should go into a store to have it taken care of there.

They will sometimes offer to help you to program the target handset at the end of the call. But, if not, you can easily do this by yourself after the call. Or go into the store to submit the port request and execute these steps while there.

You must have a Verizon Wireless enabled handset in order to perform the port. An unlocked SIM card based smart phone will not be sufficient.

If you are going to open a new line, you can do it in person or over the phone. They will sometimes offer to help you to program the target handset at the end of the call. But, if not, you can easily do this by yourself after the call. Or go into the store to submit the port request and execute these steps while there.

OPENING UP A NEW LINE IN AN ACCOUNT OR IN A NEW ACCOUNT

Call *611 SEND on your Verizon Wireless handset or go into a Verizon Wireless store to initiate the port request.

You must have a Verizon Wireless enabled handset in order to perform the port. An unlocked SIM card based smart phone will not be sufficient.

If you are calling Verizon Wireless, and you have a second handset, it will be more convenient to call from the second handset since you can’t program a phone at the same time you are talking on it. They will sometimes offer to help you to program the target handset at the end of the call. But, if not, you can easily do this by yourself after the call. Or go into the store to submit the port request and execute these steps while there.

SUBMIT INFORMATION TO VERIZON WIRELESS

NEW LINE OR EXISTING LINE?

The Verizon Wireless representative will ask you if you want to port your new number to an existing Verizon Wireless line (i.e., replace an existing phone number) or to a new line. If it is to a new line, you will need to have a new line added to your Verizon Wireless account first. Verizon Wireless may provide you with a temporary number just for this purpose. The temporary number will be replaced by your new number when the porting process completes. It does not matter which area code the temporary number is in.

If you are porting your new number to an existing line, you will be porting the new number “over top of” the existing number – which means you will lose the old/current number permanently. So if you need to keep the old number, then open a new line for the new number. You may want to consider using call forwarding from the old number to the new number so you don’t miss any calls.

FEES

Verizon Wireless does not charge a fee for porting a new number in.

If you are porting your new number over top of an existing one, your existing 2 year contract period will not be restarted. So if you have, for example, 5 months left on your contract, only the 5 months will be left on the line after your port request goes through. But confirm this with your representative just to make sure a mistake is not made.

PROGRAMMING YOUR PHONE

Your phone will now need to be reprogrammed.

Reprogramming, in this case, means that your new number will be transmitted to the receiving party’s phone handset on their caller ID.

However, this is NOT the same thing as the port itself. It is merely programming the phone handset. A port requires the cooperation of both the losing carrier and the winning carrier. Which takes time. A reprogramming, however, is a Verizon Wireless function alone and is specific to the particular handset you are using.

To program your handset, you or your Verizon Wireless representative will simply dial *228 SEND. Select Option 1 and wait for your new phone number to reboot.

If you make any outbound calls before your number ports through, the receiving party will see your new number, not your temporary number. This does NOT mean that your number has been ported.

WAITING FOR THE PROCESS TO COMPLETE

If your number is being ported from another wireless carrier, the acknowledgement and approval of the port request by the losing carrier can usually be instantaneous.

That is because the FCC has allowed automated porting systems between carriers.

Hence, a wireless-to-wireless port will normally take less than 24 hours to complete, including over the weekends. However, it might take only 5-10 minutes.

If your number is being ported from a landline or VOIP carrier this will normally take about 3-4 business days (not calendar days).

This is because landline/VOIP carrier port-out departments do not work weekends, and their porting systems are not automated to the same degree that wireless carrier porting departments are.

A Verizon Wireless representative may incorrectly estimate that the port will take 24 hours or less if they are not familiar with landline/VOIP ports.

Conversely, a representative may tell you that the port may take 5 days, 10 days or even 15 days. This may be incorrect as well. The representatives may simply want to overestimate the port times so that they do not falsely set your expectations to the short side.

FIRM ORDER COMMITMENT (FOC) DATE

If the losing carrier is a landline or VOIP carrier, you can contact Verizon Wireless after one to two business days (not calendar days) to get an FOC date. The FOC date is the port date that the losing carrier has scheduled your number to port to Verizon Wireless. (They are also given the planned time of day for the port, however you will rarely be offered that information).

ONCE THE PORT IS COMPLETED

Your new number will automatically start to work on your handset once the port has completed.

You will normally get a text message from Verizon Wireless to let you know that the port request is complete and the number is now functioning on the new handset.

However, be aware that, even then, it is not guaranteed to be fully functioning properly; this can take another day or two as explained in the next point.

DUAL/MIXED SERVICE

This is something Verizon Wireless rarely tells you but is important. Sometimes during the 24-48 hour period after a port is “complete” some inbound calls may still get routed to the losing carrier even while outbound calls will be functioning normally. This period is called a Dual Service or Mixed Service period. It can happen because it may take a day or two for all of the primary switches in the telephone network to be reset so that all inbound calls get routed to the correct carrier and handset. This rarely happens, but, unfortunately, it can happen while the change works its way through the multiplicity of carrier systems involved. There is no benefit to contacting Verizon Wireless about this problem unless it lasts for longer than 2 days.

TEXT MESSAGING

Text messaging capabilities can sometimes take up to 3 business days to begin functioning normally.

USEFUL CONTACT INFORMATION

*611 SEND may be used to reach Verizon Wireless customer service department from your Verizon Wireless phone. It will normally work even when you do not have an active number on it. However, calling this number or their general customer service toll free number can get you lost endlessly in their automated option selection tree. So it will usually be quicker to call the Verizon Wireless porting department at 800 844 7095. They sometimes change this number, but you will normally get someone at Verizon Wireless even if the number is old.

To check to see whether a number is eligible to be ported into your Verizon Wireless service, go the following link: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/support/switch-to-verizon

The same link can provide you with the status of a port request. If it has been approved, it will not give you the FOC date, but at least it will tell you whether there is a problem with the port request. To get the FOC date, you will still need to call the porting department.

Sometimes Verizon provides conflicting information on the two menu options at that link. Try each to get the most complete answer.

Sours: https://phonenumberguy.com/porting/porting-a-phone-number-to-verizon-wireless/

If you're switching service providers and remaining in the same geographic area, you can keep your existing phone number. This process – often referred to as phone number porting – can be done between wireline, IP and wireless providers.

Getting the porting process started

You may request service from a different company at any time. When changing companies:

  • Review your current contract. Your contract may contain early termination fees and/or outstanding balances that you are obligated to pay.
  • Do not terminate your service with your existing company before initiating new service with another company.
  • Contact the new company to start the process of porting your number.
  • Provide the new company with your 10-digit phone number and any additional information required.

Are there fees for porting?

  • Companies may charge you to port your number, but you can ask whether any fees can be waived or negotiated.
  • Once you request service from a new company, your old company cannot refuse to port your number, even if you owe money for an outstanding balance or termination fee.

How long does the porting process last?

FCC rules require simple ports, which generally do not involve more than one line or more complex adjustments to telephone switching equipment, to be processed in one business day. You may be able to use your phone within a few hours for changes among wireless service providers. However, porting from wireline to wireless service may still take a few days.

Service issues for wireline to wireless transition

If you port from a wireline phone to a wireless phone, there may be a period when you have two telephones with the same number.  Ask your new wireless company whether you will be able to continue using your current wireline number during the one-day transfer process.

Wireless 911 location and callback services (where available) may be affected during the transition.  Calls should go through, but 911 operators may not be able to call you back if disconnected.  Before porting, ask your new company if your 911 service will be affected during the process.

Also, your wireline long distance company will not move with you.  Your long distance service will likely be provided by your new wireless company, which you should verify.

Porting is not always possible

If you are moving to a new geographic area, you may not be able to keep your current phone number when changing providers.

Also, some rural wireline service providers may obtain waivers for the porting requirement from state authorities. Their customers may be unable to port their number to a new provider. If you are unable to port your number for that reason, contact your state public utilities commission for further information.
