The 10 Greatest Classic Corvette Restomods We've Ever Seen

Improving upon perfection is not easy. In fact, many would argue that it's impossible. However, we know that it isn't, as evidenced by the creativity of countless individuals who have managed to blend modern features with timeless, classic car designs, thus giving birth to "restomods." And not many classic cars can match the restoration potential and sheer beauty of America's favorite sports car - the Chevrolet Corvette.

People have done some outstanding things with classics, particularly with classic Chevrolet Corvettes. Though they are already beautiful and powerful (sometimes) from the factory, we can't help ourselves but indulge in some heavily modified alternatives!

That being said, let's sit back and enjoy ten of the greatest classic Corvette restomods we've seen to date...

10 Hardcore Engine Builders’ Corvette C3.6

To say that the original Chevrolet Corvette C3 was "under-powered" would be quite an understatement. We here at HotCars recognized that the Corvette C3 needs a better power source, and it would seem we're not alone, as evidenced by vehicles like Hardcore Engine Builders' Corvette C3.

To get everything they could out of the C3 body, they basically swapped as much as they could from the old parts to newer, faster C6 components. Parts included: a 6.2-liter LS3, performance suspension, driver assists, paddle-shift sequential-automatic transmission, and more. In our eyes, it was totally worth it!

9 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split-Window Custom

On the outside, this 1963 Corvette Split-Window may not look that wild or impressive at first glance. Though, “unimpressive” or "boring" are far from anything that we'd call this particular C2.

Built by Jeff Hayes Customs in 2019, it was recently featured by Barrett-Jackson during one of their auctions. Under the hood, this '63 Split-Window Coupe is equipped with a modern LS3 V8, a new automatic transmission, and tons of other goodies only found on brand new cars. With that in mind, it’s no wonder this C2 sold for $385,000...

8 All Speed Customs' Corvette 'Crusher'

Looking for a new convertible sports car to enjoy the summer and fall with? Well, we think a Corvette like All Speed Customs' C3 'Crusher' would be a perfect choice.

We've actually featured this exact C3 in another piece regarding restomod Corvettes. As it was put then, "The powerplant produces a claimed 750 horsepower and 685 lb-ft of torque, all of which is routed to the rear wheels through a good-old-fashioned TKO 500 five-speed manual transmission."

The Crusher is a seriously powerful Corvette, but an even better cruiser. Imagine, top down, cruising on a coastal highway knowing full-well that over 700-hp waits to be unleashed at any moment. To us, that's heaven.

7 SRIII Motorsports’ 1957 Chevrolet Corvette C1 Restomod

Once again, we have auctions to thank for bringing forth some of the coolest restomod muscle cars. In this instance, we have SRIII Motorsports’ ‘57 C1 - Sold during a Mecum Auction in 2019.

This C1 doesn't look that much different from the original, that is unless you take a closer look. Upon further inspection, you'll notice the sleeker chassis, additional air-ducts, and improved aerodynamics. Just about everything in this C1 is updated to 1990 specifications since that was when it was finished. In short, it’s basically a better-looking C4 ZR-1…

6 Joe Rogan's 1965 Corvette Stingray Restomod

Joe Rogan is famous for a lot of things - His podcast and UFC career amongst the most prominent reasons – and is intimately known by many. However, did you know that he’s somewhat of a gearhead? That’s right, folks. Rogan has a good taste in cars; backed up further when you see his chromed out C2 convertible.

Rogan's personality matches his choice in muscle cars perfectly! Under the hood, this '65 Vette has a basic LS1. What makes it special, though, is the fact that it was all a custom fabrication to get the newer V8 and supercharger into the C2 body.

As an aside, Joe Rogan was not the one who commissioned this build. Rather, it was the previous owner's doing.

5 Bob Gawlik’s Corvette C3 Restomod

The right type of design can work wonders on a good sports car. In some cases, that aesthetic is (more or less) the same as it was from the factory. Why fix something that isn't broken, after all, right? This, dear readers, is how many Corvette enthusiasts feel about the C3 body style.

Bob Gawlik, the owner of the Corvette shown above, seems to be in agreement with us. His restomod C3 still looks like it would've in it's prime, if not better. All of the original design components (like the trunk rack and chrome trim) are still present. Heck, even the interior is mint!

All Gawlik's Vette needed was some new-age power, which it found in a massive Chevrolet LS7: a custom-built 427 V8 with figures in excess of 650-hp.

4 1962 Chevrolet Corvette C1RS Restomod

There are those who like to mod their Corvette's like Gawlik does (aiming for partial subtlety), and then there's those who go all the way into modern, redesigned bodies. This 1962 Chevy Corvette 'C1RS' is the latter.

Now, this isn't a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it's quite impressive. The C1RS is (in essence) a 2009 ZR-1 in a C1's clothing. Nevertheless, it'll still send its passengers into their seats whenever you apply the throttle!

3 Brian Hobaugh’s 1965 Corvette Stingray

Next up is a car that both movie-buffs and car enthusiasts, alike, will recognize. Featured in the eighth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, Fate of the Furious, is none other than Brian Hobaugh's Corvette Stingray (Letty's car on-screen).

Hobaugh's C2 Stingray is more than just some Hollywood show-car. In fact, it's a bonafide racer; thanks primarily to efforts of the father-son duo. With an LS-swap, race suspension, weight-reduction, and more, you can bet your bottom dollar that it sat on the podium!

2 Paul Wolf’s 1959 Chevrolet Corvette C1

Remember how we touched on keeping the original designs with Bob Gawlik's restomod? Well, Paul Wolf's 1959 Corvette C1 embodies the same principals, but cranked up to '100-percent.'

The C1's appearance doesn't need anything to make it beautiful. In all actuality, the only things that'd significantly improve the C1 beyond its current station are 21st-century internals. As you've probably surmised by now, Wolf's Corvette has that, too -  An LS3 making ~430-hp or so.

1 Ares Corvette C2 Restomod

Finally, we present the Ares Corvette C2 - A restomod Corvette unlike any other! The vibes we get from the Ares Corvette isn't like those of your 'run-of-the-mill' restomods. No, this C2 looks more like a couch-built European sports car than a '60s Chevy.

Every part of this build just screams "early-'60s luxury" and we couldn't love it more! The bespoke rims, halo headlights, and high-performance capabilities hearken (to us) back to the days of classic BMW Alpina's.

If you'd have told us that someone could implement that type of aesthetic into a Corvette, we'd of dismissed you as crazy. Now, though, we've been enlightened to the truth.

Coolest-Ever Corvette C2 Restomod Headed To Auction

There are those that restore cars as close as possible to original condition, which is and of itself a noble goal. However, there is a section of the restoration crowd that also loves to make the original car have a modern level of taste and power. These cars are what are known as restomods, or, by the original full name, “modified restorations.” Today, we bring you the best of both types of restorations, with a car that is headed to the classic Barrett-Jackson Car Auction later this month, with no reserve price.

Corvette C2 Restomod A 1967 Corvette C2 was found, and it was taken to Flat Out Autos (full gallery on their FB page) for a little TLC. Included in that care and attention was a full paint strip to metal, then building it back up with a beautiful deep white paint with a contrasting power stripe along the hood and over the air intake. Internally, Easley’s Custom Upholstery cut no corners and spared no expense on the interior, with custom seats, custom leather everywhere, and even a custom stereo, with a wireless phone charger in the top middle of the dash where the only speaker used to be. That stereo is now fully Bluetooth enabled, and has speakers mounted throughout the interior.

On the outside, both the front and rear bumpers, originals from the car, were sent to Dan’s Plating & Polishing, where they were sanded clean of any old rust or chrome, and re-plated with all-new, factory-grade chrome. The car sits on custom wheels by Curtis Speed Equipment and wrapped in sticky Nitto NT05’s. Side exit exhaust pipes sit under custom exhaust guards and allow the roar of the LS3 powerplant under the hood to sing the song of its people. That LS3 has also been fitted with an LS Classics “Tri-power” intake and big block valve covers to give it a retro look while punching out modern numbers, with estimated horsepower creeping near the 500 mark.

This, we think, is one of the finest restomods that has ever existed, and it just has that “cool factor” dialed up to well past 11. This truly is the coolest-ever Corvette C2 restomod!

Is This The Perfect Chevrolet Corvette C2 Restomod?

This might look like a stock C2 Corvette from a distance, but modern engineering gives this car the edge of classic counterparts

The C2 generation of the 1960s Chevrolet Corvette has to be one of the most charismatic incarnations of America’s favorite sports car. Serving as one of Chevy’s first wind tunnel developed models, its streamlined design this still sought after today. However, in 2019 original cars lack the modern-day performance to go with those looks. This custom 1967 model heading to auction with Barrett-Jackson blends old and new together.

Restomod cars can be done very tastefully, or totally ruin the classic on which it is based. Thankfully, this C2 falls into the former camp! From a few steps back it looks pretty original with a factory correct paint scheme and bodywork, but move closer and there a few hints that this is no ordinary Corvette.

It’s beautiful bullet-like shape is pure and uninterrupted, with just a hint of aggression coming from those side-mounted exhausts. The biggest giveaway is the car’s larger alloy wheels that hide modern disc brakes at each corner. This creation also sits slightly lower thanks to new 1996 Corvette suspension and coilover shocks.

The dark blue leather interior appears as the original designer intended, with the cabin totally unblemished. It’s a great specification with its creator knowing the true value of the understatement.

Something that isn’t understated is the power plant under the hood. A ZZ 454 cubic-inch Tri-Power V8 calls the engine bay home and absolutely dominates the space. The bright red ‘big block’ features a cast-iron exhaust manifold and is dressed to look like a 427 motor — in reality its performance outstrips the 425hp of the engine it replicates.

Sometimes less really is more, and in the car of this tastefully customized C2 Corvette, that is very much the case. Big performance, classic looks, and more modern handling creates the perfect restomod cocktail.

The car is being sold without reserve at Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach event April 11-13th, 2019.
