What others had to say

5 stars GUINN SFeatured review

I have been a patient of Dr. Ellis’s for over 25 years and I would never consider changing. In fact, I now live in another state and plan my dental checkups around visits back to my home state. Dr. Ellis has never recommended excessive or unnecessary work. He and his staff are always friendly and make me feel comfortable during every procedure. I highly recommend Dr. Ellis!

I'm 70 now. I've seen many dentists in my life. Brent Ellis is the best dentist I've known in my life. I'm living in another state about 8 hrs away. Losing teeth now and I know that Dr. Ellis would be helping me keep them. If you are reading this review, I am telling you from experience that he's the best. Oh, yes, I used to tease him by telling him his favorite hymn was "Crown Him with Many Crowns" and his favorite scripture was, "Open your mouth wide and I will fill it!"

On the Job with Ann Linton: Dentist believes in educating patients

Name: Ann M. Linton

Occupation: Dentist

Linton has owned Abercorn Family Dentistry, 1310 Abercorn St., for 11 years.

What she does: "All aspects of general dentistry. We see adults and children. We do oral surgery, tooth-colored fillings, cosmetic procedures, root canals, implants, dentures, crowns and bridges.

"I use state-of-the-art equipment, such as digital X-rays and laser technology. We have internal (digital) cameras for oral photographs of the actual condition of the patients' mouths.

"We have a patient education system that describes all the procedures. I'm a firm believer of educating the patient."

How she got started:

"I started as a dental assistant (in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1978) and worked my way up to assistant administrator for a large, multi-doctor office.

"I enjoyed dentistry and decided to go to dental school. I was doing everything for this one dentist. I thought, 'I might as well become one.'

"In addition to learning the dentistry, I learned the business end. That's where many people fail. They have to know how to control costs and billing and collections. That's a big part of running a business."

Educational background: "I graduated from high school in London, where I was born and raised.

"I graduated from Brooklyn College with a liberal arts degree. My major was biology.

"I applied to dental school at the University of Maryland at Baltimore and graduated from there. I did a residency program at Harlem Hospital, which is affiliated with Columbia University. I served as the chief resident there in my second year.

"I went back to Long Island College and did my master's in public health."

What brought her to Savannah: "I got tired of the snow."

Family: Linton and her husband, Roy, are rearing two teenagers.

Skills needed for the job: "You definitely need to be a people person, because you are dealing with the public. You have patients coming in, in pain. It's high anxiety for a lot of patients. A few patients have been traumatized (by the dentist).

"You listen and talk to the patient to calm them down and let them know you'll help get them out of pain.

"You need good hand-eye coordination. You have to have an eye for aesthetics. You have to be somewhat of an artist."

Were you ever traumatized by the dentist? "No. I had a lot of cavities when I was younger due to my love of anything sweet. My dentist back then was like a drill sergeant. She did not speak much, but it wasn't traumatizing compared to some of the stories I have heard from patients throughout the years."

Job perks: "Flexible hours. I get to make my own schedule (and) help people when they are suffering. It's a great feeling to know what you do can alleviate their pain and increase their self-esteem. I get to meet interesting people and form great relationships.

"Having a flexible schedule allows me to give back to the community by going into the schools and churches and health fairs and (conducting) free screenings and talking to children about dentistry and dental careers."

Have you ever influenced a student? "College students have shadowed me and then gone on to apply to dental and hygiene school. Sometimes when I go to engagements, students will tell me they heard me speak and it inspired them to pursue dentistry. You just don't know the impact you'll have, which is why I think it's important to go out in the community."

Job drawbacks: "It's hard to think of one. The hours can be long. It doesn't end when the patient leaves. There's the business aspect."

First job: "Working in Tesco supermarket stocking shelves and then working up to a cashier. I did that on weekends and summer holidays. I was in London at that time."

The future of dentistry: "Implants. The baby boom generation is not looking to do what their parents did - take out all their teeth and go to dentures. They want fixed teeth that they don't have to take out and put in a jar at night."

Future dentistry trends: "3D X-rays that allow us to see more. I was just looking at it this past weekend. I'd love to buy it, but it's about $100,000.

"There's a computer-assisted machine that will mill crowns in one visit. That's about $120,000. Technology is still very expensive.

"I think we'll see an increase in (e-mail and Web site) appointments, but I don't think it will replace the phone call, because people still like talking to people. And they usually have a lot of questions, because there are always insurance issues."

Professional organizations: "National Dental Society, the Savannah Dental Society. I'm a corporate board member at the Greenbriar Children's Center and a member of the National Council of Negro Women. I'm a member of the Savannah Chapter of The Links Inc., which also works with children."
