2 Engine Failure problem of the 2003 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 12/28/2016

I won a car from my local Chrysler dealer. The car had a 2. 7l v6 engine in it that nada and kbb do not list such an engine in this type of car that I won, so I can only assume it was a dealer swap prior to the raffle drawing, but they deny the swap when I called them about this incident. When I won it, last June it had like 181,000 miles on the car, unknown mileage on the engine, but I had it from Jun to deb 2016 and drove it maybe 9000 miles max and it failed without warning. I changed the oil every 3000 to 4000 miles, so like 2-3 times since I have had the car and it had no indication of any engine problems prior to spontaneous and complete engine failure. I have my cars services regularly for tire rotations, car inspections etc. Nothing could have warned me about this and I had no idea about the class actions law suits pertaining to this exact engine until my engine failed a few months ago. I climbing th interstate on ramp when all of a sudden the rpm's on my car continued to rise while my car was slowing down, in essense it was reving as I accellerated, but my car was slowing, so I immediately pulled over on the side of the road and attempted to restart my car, nothing happened, so I had it towed to a local mechanic, when it got back to the shop, the car started back up as normal, but I left it anyway, because it clearly had an issue. It was discovered after the mechanic drove it that the oil light came on and the engine lost oil pressure. There was plenty of good oil in the tank, when it was checked and based on the level there was no need to add oil. It was determined that the engine was seizing up due to oil sludge and that my only fix is a new engine.

3 Engine Failure problem of the 2003 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 05/15/2014

Engine failure due to oil sludge. This is, apparently, a common problem affecting the 2. 7l v6 engine.

5 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 08/09/2011

Purchased 2004 Sebring convertible memorial weekend 2011. During delivery from utah auto gallery oil light flickered. Dealer cheated oil and said was ion. Oil change in July with synthetic oil. Vehicle engine seized while on mountain highway i80, out side of salt lake city. Discovered via internet that 2. 7 engines defective. Dealer not returning call. Research says the sign that the engine is starting to seize is the flicker of the oil light. Vehicle sold with the potential of a catastrophic engine failure, which happened a month and a half after vehicle sold. Car has only been driven 922 miles since purchased.

6 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 08/06/2011

This was the second failure of Chrysler's 2. 7 v-6 engine. Neither engine failure warranty was upheld by providers. First one was at 49000 miles and failed due to engine sludge, extended warranty was not honored due to owner neglect, even though I provided all receits for all oil changes required. This problem seems to be common for premature failure of this engine. I purchased a new engine and 3 years and 14000 miles another failure ocurred. This time no reason could be found for the failure and in spite of mechanics statement that all fluids were present at time of engine removal to be shipped for inspection, it was determined to be owner caused and warranty not honored. Currently engine is being examined by a third party independent facility to determine cause for a future legal action.

8 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

Engine failure- I have a 2001 Chrysler Sebring limited with the 2. 7 ltr engine of which I have faithfully had serviced. The engine, with no warning, went out just as I am seeing with other complaints on the web.

9 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 06/28/2010

I bought my 2001 Sebring lxi convertible in Dec 2003, with just over 500 miles on the odometer. It had suffered a transmission failure at the original dealer, had never been sold to a customer, was returned to Chrysler for a replacement, then sat on a back lot for nearly two years before being resold to another dealer. I bought it with a new car warranty and bought the extended (7 year/70,000 mile) warranty. After initial problems with the transmission control module, heater and warped brake rotors (all fixed by the dealer), the car served me very well for 50,000 miles--no serious issues at all. At each service after roughly 20,000 miles, I would tell the Chrysler service dept that the oil pressure light was coming on intermittently. They would duly check the oil level and tell me not to worry. Then I took it to a Chrysler dealer (rosenthal, arlington, va) for the 50k service and told them that the oil pressure light had been coming on frequently at idle or very low rpms for the past 10,000 miles or so, but the oil level was fine, and also that the engine had begun to use oil at about 1 quart every couple of thousand miles. The dealer service manager told me not to worry, that this particular engine (2. 7l) with that much mileage tended to use oil. He said just to keep it topped up. I kept checking and adding oil for the next 5,000 miles. Just before I intended to take the car in for another oil change, the engine blew without warning on an inter-state highway. I had it hauled to the nearest Chrysler dealer and paid to have the oil pan pulled and assessed. The mechanic said the engine was blown and the cause was sludge build-up, and that my extended warranty did not cover that cause for engine failure.

10 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 03/25/2010

2001 Chrysler Sebring convertible 2. 7 l, 89500 miles, engine looses of power at 70 mph on i95 without warning in heavy traffic, forcing driver to make a unsafe lane changes to coast off of the roadway. Investigation on internet has resulted in find out that Chrysler corp has had a big problem with this engine failing but takes no responsibility for the failure and continues to blame it all on the consumer for improper maintenance, oil changes. The engine will need to be rebuilt or replaced once the exact component failure most likely a rod bearing is found, this will result in total replacement at a cost of $6,000 - $8,000 or more at my expense when it should be covered by the vehicle warranty.

11 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

We already had a complete engine failure at 58,000 miles with our Sebring in 2008. The car was under warranty and Chrysler refused to fix the problem. We had to hire a lawyer and 5 months later we had an entirely new engine put in. One year later, the car is back in the shop because it overheats every 5 miles. We our on our third try after the dealerships has been sending it back saying they can't find anything wrong with it.

Failure Date: 04/14/2009

The contact owns a 2001 Chrysler Sebring. While driving 50 mph, the vehicle decelerated and completely shut off. The vehicle would not restart and was towed to an auto service shop. The technician stated that the 2. 7 liter engine failed, which was a common issue. The dealer has not been notified and the vehicle has not been repaired. The vehicle is still at the repair shop and will cost $6,000 to repair. The failure and current mileages were 117,000.

13 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

The horn goes off intermittently and eventually the only alternative is to disconnect it, because of poor assembly from Chrysler, they attached the horn to the airbag and the entire system has to be replaced- if the horn does not work, neither does the airbag. A death trap. Poor design of the 2. 7 engine by Chrysler. . Oil light flickers. . . Oil sludge build up which will cause catastrphic engine failure and result in an accident. Chrysler refuses to address these problems.

14 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 10/08/2008

Engine failure only 67,000 mi. Caused by defective engine 2. 7l.

15 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 08/27/2008

A fuel pump was replaced in the car. After the repair the car ran bad and the engine light was on. Dealer advised it was only oil sludge and it was okay to drive. The car experienced a complete engine failure while driving on the interstate.

17 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 06/07/2008

I was driving my vehicle (2001 Chrysler Sebring 2. 7l) on the highway at approx. 70 miles per hour when it suddenly shut off. I was barely able to maneuver to the side of the road. Vehicle has been diagnosed with engine failure due to oil sludge and antifreeze in the oil. The $2000 ge extended warranty that I purchased has denied the claim due to "poor maintenance" without even seeing all of my receipts. Chrysler manual recommends oil change every 7500 miles and they were all done well before that. No work has currently been done on the vehicle as ge is requesting complete tear down of the motor for further investigation, yet they will not pay the cost.

18 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

Engine failure driving in traffic- just luck I was not hit by another vehicle. . . Was able to pull over to curbside with forward momentum and then get vehicle towed. Could have been catastrophic on a busy day or on a more crowded highway.

19 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 02/25/2008

My Sebring died today literally 6 seconds from home. I pulled out into traffic from the local mijer and it died! I just sank a bunch of cash into it to which makes this really great. Around last June I noticed a rattling that kind of made the car sound like a diesel semi. Trouble was it would happen during initial starting and kick out and go back to normal after 5 - 10 min. So naturally no professional ever heard this rattle as by the time I got it into a shop it seemed fine!!! even better, in the last couple of months a new problem cropped up you might be familiar with the flickering low oil pressure gauge at idol? that's just the beginning. It gradually required higher rpm to make it fade away and eventually always on. Well $200. 00 replaces the oil sensor but don't expect that to fix the problem you just get to start the process all over again!!! two days ago I had it in again for a cam shaft sensor another $200. 00 and the mechanic warns me not to invest too much more into this pos because the rattling and the low oil pressure are probably a sign that the engine is going. "it could be two months it could be two years but it's going go. " how about two days. Engine failure!!!!!!! to any one willing to give it a try, I wish I did if only for feeling proactive is you can purchase a pure one purelite oil filter which will add 5lbs of pressure to the system and run a thicker oil. This advice I received from Chrysler's head mechanic! a busy man im guessing. He said that the rattling was because low oil pressure was not pushing it up into the (technical mumbo jumbo) im no pro. For the record I did not do this. It's winter here! and this fancy oil filter is not sold any where I know short of ordering online. The best part is I was planning to figure it out tomorrow on my only day off in two weeks! my wife's Ford has twice the miles my Sebring does and at least it still runs!!!! a Ford!!!!.

20 Engine Failure problem of the 2003 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 02/07/2008

Chrysler 2. 7l engine failure. Refusal of Chrysler to honor 7/70,000 drivetrain warranty or purchased extended warranty. Engine seized with no warning lights. Vehicle was stopped immediately and towed. Chrysler is following the pattern stated by other customers. Not honoring warranty, then coming back with a 50% offer with an exaggerated used engine price. Car has been on out of service for 6 weeks.

21 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 02/07/2008

I drive a 2001 Chrysler Sebring. I am still under the extended warranty (fewer than 80,000 miles). The engine, 2. 7l, failed on 2/7/08 with absolutely no warning. It was towed to the dealership and I was told that it was my fault because I did not properly maintain the vehicle. Chrysler has already publicly admitted that this engine is faulty which can cause premature engine failure. Yet, Chrysler is quick to point the finger at me. I was told to gather all of my oil-change receipts (from 2002 - 2008) and forward to Chrysler for reconsideration. First of all, if the engine is faulty from the beginning, how can I be judged for properly maintaining an inferior product? what type of guidelines does one follow for taking care of a faulty engine?.

22 Engine Failure problem of the 2003 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 11/16/2007

Engine failure car just stopped at 41,000 (est) with no warning.

23 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 10/02/2007

Sudden engine failure- 2002 Chrysler Sebring lxi sedan, 62,400 miles- no warning. Two opinions have both stated total engine replacement is the only option- $3000 for a used (60,000 mi) engine. Have not yet decided if I will fix, and then immed unload, or try and trade- and get nothing! (still owe $3500).

24 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 08/10/2007

While driving my 2001 chrsyler Sebring all of sudden knocking and tapping noise started. Proceeded to pull over and turned the car off. Attempted to restart vehicle and it would not start. Call towing company and had it towed to chrsyler dealership. Paid for diagnostics and was told that it was engine failure due to oil slug. Car is inoperable. This 2. 7l engine has been known for engine failure and chrsyler indicated that it was due to lack of maintenance. Oil changes were made according to the owners manual and this should not have occurred.

The vehicle was towed to the dealer where they advised that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 15,500.

30 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 10/01/2006

Engine failure, oil light comes on. Chrysler has installed a Mitsubishi engine in Sebring model 2001. This engine has had numerous problems associated with oil blockage. They call it sludge. This is a design failure in the ability for the engine to maintain reliable oil pressure to the total engine components and has cause numerous engine replacements. It is a hazard for these vehicles to be on the road. Mitsubishi has a voluntary program to support replacement from what I understand.

31 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 08/04/2006

I want to get as much information as early as possible. On the way to town, my car stalled at a stop light. Started it, stalled again, restarted and now I can hear a loud knocking(the rod) I eased it in to the local grocery store, where the knocking persisted. I then went towards home, got on to my road and called my father in law and we decided to push it in to the driveway. I called the local Chrysler dealerships (2) and the first words out of their mouths was, "as long as we don't find any sludge, this will be covered under warranty. " in researching the engine on the internet, there are something like 1500 or more complaints regarding Chrysler not fixing this car, on cars that are under their warranty. They are denying under the "guise" that the owners are not maintaining their vehicles. This is pure hogwash, because this issue is a manufacturer defect and has been present since models back to 1999. It is embarrassing that a car manufacturer is so cheap that they can not admit their mistake, cover it under the warranty and just be done with it. I had my 4 year old daughter in the car, I am glad that I did not have a total engine failure and end up in the ditch or rear ended like many others I have read about. When it stalled, luckily the people behind me realized that I was having an issue and got over to the other lane quick enough, they only honked their horn at me, as to which my daughter wanted to know why. Chrysler should be forced to take care of these issues. There are several other major car manufacturers, Audi, Toyota, that have had similar sludge issues and they have stepped up and started engine replacement, and/or repair programs to take care of their mistakes. Everyone in the united states needs to hear about this, to avoid buying this terrible engine and the sleepless nights. For the safety of all of us driving a vehicle with a 2. 7l engine and for all of our families, please do something about this terrible injustice.

32 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 04/02/2006

2. 7l v6 engine failure in our 2004 Sebring with 48,300 miles. The engine failed while driving, had to have the car towed and find a way back home 30 miles away. The dealership states the cause as oil sludge will not cover under 7 yr/70000 mile warranty. We complained that the car was not acting right on 3-26-06 and was told nothing wrong.

33 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 02/23/2006

Purchased a 2001 Chrysler Sebring new with 101 miles in Aug 2001. Vehicle currently has 42,000 miles and the engine failed due to sludge build up in the engine. The Chrysler's 2. 7l engine has many internet documents showing this is a common problem. Not covered by Chrysler or extended warranty. Was driving vehicle 65 mph on a highway at 8:00 am when the car just died. Fortunately (although rush hour) no one was directly behind the vehicle. Car has not been repaired as Chrysler wants $6,000 to fix the engine and the vehicle is only worth $8,800. Car is still sitting at dealership. Chrysler has not made any changes to this engine so even if repairs are made this problem will keep occurring.

34 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 02/20/2006

: the contact stated while driving at 65 mph, the engine stalled. The vehicle was towed to the dealership for inspection. The dealer recommended replacing the engine due to internal parts within the engine failing. The engine was replaced and the vehicle operates normally. The engine was replaced by the manufacturer. The contact had to pay $250. 00 deductible and $150. 00 for a new engine mounting bracket.

35 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 02/02/2006

I own a Chrysler Sebring with a 2. 7l engine, my auto body repair driver was taking the car to have a 4 wheel alignment when the engine seized while he was driving down the road. There was no warning the engine just quit. I had a factory rebuilt engine put in the car for the cost of $4500. 00 and the auto repair shop stated the engine failed due to sludge.

The Chrysler Sebring was a midsize car sold from 1995 to 2010. These models came in sedan, coupe, and convertible models. Many owners liked the design of these cars, especially the convertible. Because they were so popular, many of these cars are still on the road today.

However, the 2001 and 2002 Chrysler Sebring both had chronic problems with oil leaks. These problems came from the Chrysler Sebring’s 2.7-liter engine. Left untreated, these oil leaks created engine sludge. The engine sludge caused complete engine failure and led to expensive repairs.

Engine sludge that led to engine failure

Many who bought the Chrysler Sebring were excited about this car. They liked the car’s styling. Despite the great looks on the outside, there were significant problems with the engine.

On CarComplaints.com, the most reported problem with the Chrysler Sebring is oil sludge that results in engine failure. This happened because oil would leak out of the engine. When this engine oil is continuously exposed to high heat, it oxidizes and breaks down, which forms sludge. The engine sludge would then cover the entire engine, which made it work less efficiently. Eventually, the engine would break down and have to be completely replaced.

The frustrating part for many owners is that they didn’t know about the problem until it was too late. By the time they realized there was a problem, they had to replace the engine. This included owners that took good care of their car, which meant they got regular oil changes and frequently had the vehicle serviced.

Because this problem accumulated over time, most owners didn’t see problems until their car was over 80,000 miles. Car Complaints reported that these engine problems appeared in the 2001 model around 85,000 miles on average. In the 2002 model, it usually appeared around 94,000 miles on average. In some cases, these problems didn’t occur until the car was well over 100,000 miles.

Another frustrating part for owners was Chrysler’s response. Many owners found out afterward that Chrysler knew about the problem. They were frustrated that Chrysler didn’t issue a recall on the engine or take any steps to help owners with the problem.

How much did it cost to fix?

Because most owners didn’t realize the problem until it had caused severe engine damage, most owners had to install a new engine. Car Complaints reported that the typical repair cost for the 2001 Chrysler Sebring averaged at $4,830, and the 2002 Chrysler Sebring averaged at $4,100. Many individual reviewers reported repair costs between $3,000 to $6,000.

In some cases, replacing the engine the first time wasn’t enough. A few owners reported that the problem happened in the new engine, which forced them to replace the Chrysler Sebring’s engine a second time.

What other problems did the Chrysler Sebring have?

While the most reported problem on Car Complaints was engine failure from oil sludge, there were other complaints. Many owners had problems with the air conditioner and heater. They complained about the blower fan not working unless it was set to high, loud noises from the air conditioner or heater, and water pooling on the floor.

Another complaint involved electrical problems with interior systems. Many owners reported issues with the instrument cluster and dash lights not working. Others noticed issues with the radio, power locks, and power seats.

For many Chrysler Sebring owners, all of these problems were frustrating. Owners would spend thousands of dollars on car repairs only to have something else break down. After all of these problems, many owners said they would never buy a Chrysler again. If you are thinking about buying a used Chrysler Sebring, make sure to look into all of these problems before you buy it.
