Building Inspections – Building inspections in the Village of Lindenhurst are done by appointment only. Building inspections are done on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Morning hours for inspections in Lindenhurst Village are from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Afternoon hours for inspections are from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Inspections are also done on Wednesday mornings.

Building Permits – Building permits can be obtained by calling the Building Department at (631) 957-7510.

This is frustrating. I live in a legal apartment in the town of babylon/village of lindenhurst (basically the top floor of someone's house), but the landlords will not allow us to park in their driveway, which is big enough for 4 cars. Only their car occupies it right now as is the case 99.9% of the time. With the snow coming down hard, I fear being plowed in and having a miserable time over the next few weeks driving over the hardened ice around my car. This happened last year too.

I think I read somewhere that legal apartments in the town of babylon are required to have at least 1 offstreet parking spot for tenants. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone knew this (landlord or me) at the time I signed the lease. But if this is true, how can I verify this? And if it's true, can I demand that my landlord give me this spot at least while the blizzard is happening?

I've done all I can to sweeten the deal such as offering to help them shovel their driveway and sending the rent check early....

What else can I do?

When the lease is up for renewal if you want to stay secure in writing the right to a parking spot off the street. For now just park where you need to what's he going to do throw you out...

Move your car in front of their mailbox. This way, when you're plowed in, so is their mailbox. Also, when you dig out, just dig out the front of your car and just enough on the side to get in. Leave the rest there for them to deal with. Make sure to let them know that had they allowed you to park in their precious driveway, this never would've happened.

You can't park on the street during a snow emergency. Park in the driveway and tell him to deal with it.

You just described the typical LI renters problem. We had same problem during ice storms in 2006-07..moved out of that apt fast. If it is the law (I am not sure but have heard about it) then tell LL this! Not that LL would apparently care anyway. I agree with twingles but sadly all renters are stuck in same predicament right now all over LI. Luckily I no longer have that problem. One of the many reasons I will not move from here to another apt. on LI...unless it is out of area. I would just pull your car into spot available in driveway & tell them due to snow emergency in effect as of 11pm that since you have room to park it..you are leaving car in driveway or tell them they can pay any damages or fines you incur from their stupid greediness! Really under these circumstances this should not even be a question. Just do it.

Do we need a permit to widen our driveway?

At some point down the line we want to widen our driveway to a two-car driveway. Do we need to get a permit from the town for this (Town of Babylon)? Will this incease our taxes?

I believe you need to get a permit because they need to make sure that the curb, the part of the driveway that meets right at the street is deeper cement then the rest of the driveway. If you are getting cement. It's it's blacktop and you have a straight driveway right out to the street, you might not have to get a permit. I would just call and ask the town. You don't have to say who you are and where you are calling from. GL!

Not sure about the permit, but taxes will go up if you widen the apron (in TOH anyway)

Did you speak to the contractor? He's the one who gave us all the info when we did ours. We widened our driveway to 10 feet, but left the apron the same.

We haven't spoken to a contractor yet. We're just tossing around some home improvement ideas right now.

JldDolphin - we currently have blacktop, so I think we'll be sticking with that.

I would just call around to contractors now and ask them if they have to get a permit or not. I believe the contractor has to get the permit for youm but I could be wrong. But when it comes to blacktop you might now have to do anything, but the permit might be just to widen the mouth of the driveway. Also, in the Town of Islip, there is a maximum square footage that the driveway can be, based on the size of your yard. I actually needed a variance because my driveway was too big! (by about 2% Chat Icon )

We just widened our driveway & we're in the town of Babylon. We could widen it right up to the property line without getting a permit, but were told to get one for widening the apron/curb cut like the pp's mentioned. You have to speak with the Highway Dept about that. This is right from the TOB Website :

Q. If someone in my neighborhood is re-doing his/her existing driveway, how close to the edge of the property line is he/she permitted to go?
A. Driveways can go up to the property line. However, in the case that a driveway touches the curb or sidewalk, please contact the Highway Department at 957-3089.

Over the past year, the Town of Babylon, a densely settled pocket on Long Island's South Shore, has outlawed backyard wrestling rings, homes with two front doors and grass longer than eight inches.

Still, town leaders say, the quality of life in Babylon is not quite what it should be.

So today, the town supervisor, Steven Bellone, used language fit for a prosecutor's closing arguments in a murder trial to call for a new community court designed to crack down on residents whose debris-strewn yards, illegal basement apartments, noisy power tools and permitless porches have vexed their neighbors for years.

''We are sending a message to those people and those individuals who are serial code offenders, violating the rights of neighborhoods and communities by their activities,'' Mr. Bellone said today, speaking at a news conference held in front of a brown shingled home that neighbors say doubles as a used-car lot. ''We are coming after you. We are going to pursue you tirelessly until you come into compliance with the town code and you stop treating neighborhoods and communities with disrespect.''

Zoning violations in the Town of Babylon, which includes North Lindenhurst, are now handled in Suffolk County Second District Court. But that court, which also handles other matters, like landlord-tenant conflicts and small-claims cases, is clogged. Zoning cases are often postponed for months and even years, town leaders said. Some homeowners, they said, particularly those who reap profits from their violations, consider the occasional summons a cost of doing business.

''We are going to unclog the system, and we are going to get these cases moving,'' Mr. Bellone said. ''We will be relentless in that pursuit.''

The building he stood in front of, 233 50th Street, is a cozy-looking house with a front lawn decorated with squat bushes and plastic swans -- and two driveways that today were filled with cars with for-sale signs and two flatbed trucks. For years, neighbors have complained to the town, officials said, saying that Daniel Marcello, who lives there, has used it as a base for an auto-body and used-car business.

Since 1995, Mr. Marcello and his wife, Brenda, have received more than a dozen summonses, for violations that included keeping unregistered cars and storing commercial vehicles on residential property, according to town records. Town officials said that the couple had paid one $150 fine, but that most of their cases had been postponed and repostponed.

At times, neighbors said today, used cars line the street, a wide road with simple, tightly spaced homes festooned with Christmas wreaths and festive red bows. They also complained about Mr. Marcello's bright outdoor lights, which they say have a glare that prevents Vito and Joan Germinario from watching television in their living room, across the street.

''I had to get another TV,'' Mr. Germinario, 71, said today.

Mr. Marcello, 48, said that he did not recall receiving any summonses, and that his penchant for collecting old cars, tinkering with them and then, sometimes, selling them, is a hobby, not a business -- and certainly not a crime.

''My whole life is cars,'' he said, adding he would appear before the new court if summoned.

The new community court would require enabling legislation from the state, town leaders said, because decades ago, the Town of Babylon chose to be part of the District Court system. If the new court is approved, it will have concurrent jurisdiction with the District Court. Mr. Bellone also wants to create a quality-of-life task force, headed by Jack Farrell, a retired New York Police Department detective who is the head of public safety for the town, that would be charged with marshaling evidence and tracking down violators. A vacancy in the town attorney's office would be filled by a special prosecutor for quality-of-life issues.

The cost of hiring staff members would be covered by violators' fines, Mr. Bellone said.

In New York City, quality of life is a catchphrase often associated with distinctly urban issues, like panhandling and loud nightclubs. In the Town of Babylon, it means something different.

''We don't have the squeegee men, but we have the guy who runs a commercial operation out of his house,'' Mr. Bellone said. ''It's suburban quality of life.''

One man was transported by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital Medical Center, while the second man was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, police said.

The extent of their injuries is unclear.
