TTS Mastertune V. SE Pro Street Tuner (Formerly Super Tuner)
Often times, people ask us, which tuner should I go with? I want the most amount of power. The aftermarket shop recommended I go with the TTS Mastertune. Meanwhile, I am getting recommendations from you that I go with the H-D® Pro Street Tuner.
I am confused. I go on the Harley® forums and there are all sorts of misinformation there.
The truth is this: Neither is perfect. But here is why we recommend the Harley-Davidson® Pro Street Tuner for your Harley-Davidson®. We tune with both all the time, but you're asking for our recommendation.
Let's take a step back a few years. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been after manufacturers for years, including Harley-Davidson®. Harley-Davidson®'s best-selling part for several years was the H-D® Super Tuner. This allowed customers and dealers to go in, plug into their bike, and push the motorcycle's Air Fuel Ratios outside the bounds of EPA regulations. In other words, you could go in and make the motorcycle produce a bunch of power, and pollution. The EPA penalized Harley-Davidson® financially and as part of the agreement, they had H-D® agree that if a motorcycle has a Super Tuner OR other device plugged in, it would not warranty certain parts on the motorcycle (primarily powertrain items).
Advance ahead a year after this. Harley-Davidson® Introduces the all-new Pro Street Tuner. This allowed us to get the motorcycle tuned, but did not allow us to push the motorcycle outside the bounds of the EPA regulation. So we could plug in like we used to be able to and adjust the air fuel ratio to where we needed it to be. You would think, the new Pro Street Tuner doesn't do everything the old Super Tuner Did. You would be correct. But, for the purposes of 99% of the performance builds we do, it is absolutely perfect. Aftermarket Shops enjoy telling you all the things the TTS Mastertune does that the Super Tuner can't do. Factually, none of those "magical" things will be used for your bike.
What's the difference. Why does the aftermarket shop recommend the TTS Mastetune? Well, several reasons:
*$$$$ The shop makes more money selling you the TTS Mastertune. Yep, the profit margin is substantially more. Feel like that impacts the recommendation? It does.
*Readily Available. The TTS Mastertune is readily available at aftermarket providers so they can order it for you rather than get it from the dealer.
Does it do a bunch more stuff than the Pro Street Tuner? Not for what you are going to do with it and keep it rideable and reliable. That's the key. We recently tuned a Harley-Davidson® with a Mastertune and a Pro Street Tuner. Which one produced more horsepower? The TTS Mastertune. By how much? One (1) Horsepower. Yes. One. That could have simply been barometric pressure differences between the days we tuned the bike.
For those of you that still have a 2 year warranty. Yes, the TTS Mastertune does negatively impact your warranty. Oh, you say you are outside the warranty? Are you aware that Harley-Davidson® sometimes allows claims outside the 2 year warranty? Yes, that's true, especially if one of their component's fails. They authorize goodwill in some cases when an item fails. Will they do that if they see a TTS Mastertune is installed-not a chance. Do we tell you that to scare you? That's what your aftermarket shop will tell you, but it's kinda nice to have support behind you when a component fails rather than asking you for the money to rebuild an engine.
It boils down to risk and reliability. If you believe that a component has to be non-Harley® in order for it to be aggressive and produce, then this article is not for you. If you understand the actual parameters of both, you will see that the Pro Street Tuner is the way to go every time. The only time we would differ is when you are going outside of a Stage IV kit and so aggressive you are looking to turn your bike into a ¼ mile racer. Otherwise, stick with something that has been designed, tested, and backed by Harley-Davidson®. But most importantly, it produces a great running result.
Lastly, got questions. Email us at [email protected] or better yet, swing in, visit with one of 3 Dyno Tuners who have all been to H-D® Super Tuner School, Mike Daniels Performance School, and Dynojet School. Ask them to show you the graphs of the builds they have completed.

MasterTune-HD is a Windows-based ECM reprogramming tool tailored specifically for use with 2001-2021 H-D motorcycles that utilize the diagnostic interface.
MasterTune-HD includes the following key features:
• Save and restore the original factory calibration
• Optional multi-vehicle interface
• Allows changing of factory speedometer calibration
• Preset limits to prevent adjusting values beyond reasonable settings
• Stores original and the last table saved edits so tuner can return to previous configuration
• Comparison functions quickly identify changed regions in tables
• Adjustment of front and rear cylinder spark advance
• Adjustment of front and rear cylinder volumetric efficiency
• Allows changing factory RPM limit
• Adjust for different fuel injector flow rates
• 2-D and 3-D graphing of tables to help visualize tuning maps
• Ability to print table graphs and table values
Note that MasterTune-HD can be licensed for programming use on either single or dual vehicles and the interface will ‘lock’ to the vehicle the first time it is used for programming.
DataMaster is a Windows-based easy-to-use data collection tool tailored specifically for use with 2001 and later Delphi-equipped Harley-Davidson® motorcycles that utilize the diagnostic interface.
VTune is a Windows-based easy-to-use VE table tuning tool tailored specifically for use with 2006 and later Delphi-equipped Harley-Davidson® motorcycles that are equipped with O2 sensors.
TTS Updater is now included with every version of MasterTune and will keep you up to date on all the latest releases from TTS.

Making Quality Horsepower | Our Experience With The TTS Master Tune System
After swapping out the intake and exhaust for more free-flowing units on our project Street Bob, we sensed our already lean-running bike was now operating anorexically in the air/fuel mixture department. The addition to a free-flowing high-performance exhaust, such as the ThunderHeader, an ultra high-flow K&N; intake can drastically change the airflow through the motor. This is due to reversion (pressure waves) during the valve overlap period that the stock motor and computer (ECM) is not set up for. This reversion affects the cylinder fill and air/fuel mixture based on RPM that the stock closed-loop ECM is set to. Yes folks, this can mean some loss of power at points throughout the powerband, but we were most worried about the adverse effects of an extremely lean running condition.
The MasterTune System
Knowing the bike needed some sort of tuning software to make it run correctly, we went with TTS's MasterTune H-D ($425) setup. The system is a Windows-based ECM reprogramming tool specifically for use with '01-later Delphi-equipped Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The MasterTune is widely known as a thorough tuning software for our machines and it has a great reputation for first getting bikes to run properly, then building horsepower from a safe and proper baseline level. Though we are only tuning our bike using the basics, this system is vast and just about every aspect of the ECM management can be tuned to the given engine's need, no matter how big the motor is or what parts were used to build it. The MasterTune has many in-depth features such as saving and restoring the original factory calibration, changing of factory speedometer calibration, changing factory RPM limit, adjustment of front and rear cylinder spark advance, as well as each cylinder's volumetric efficiency.

Coming out of the bus, we saw our group and realized that there was no one younger than us, the guys were not very attractive and much older than us, 35. Years old and more, married couples and a couple of single men, one sweet person of 23-25 years old was tearfully saying goodbye to her husband.the rest of the aunts were over 35 and they seemed to us old women.
Everyone spent their free time until the morning in their own way.
